I like seeing guys like you work on the xj 4 liter. Its a good little rig with a lot of toughness and longevity. Neat to see the neck wrung on it. Lots of comments about dropping a v8 into it, sure, but the 4.0 is something special to anyone whos ever owned a Cherokee.
It’s a very solid engine and perfect for typical off-roading or gear lugging. But it is a bit underpowered when you start getting into axle swaps, big tires, and heavy armor/cages. I’m getting to that stage now where driving onto the highway is a bit scary
@@headlesnorseman701 i know its an old thread but gearing will solve alot of that. 4.10 for 31in tires, 4.56 minimum for 35in tires, 4.88 is also a good choice for 35s. Power is nice don't get me wrong, but it won't substitute proper gearing. I've owned many xj jeeps, they're great vehicles.
Wow, I can't believe how many people there are saying 'big deal, 5HP'. Most XJ's make about 120-130hp at the wheels 'whp'. This guy is making 200whp, meaning a 70-80whp increase. Thanks for uploading.

I dont think anyone in the comment section knows how a dyno works. It measures the horsepower and torque FROM THE WHEELS. The figures everyone is getting from wikipedia is hp and tq FROM THE ENGINE which doesnt include the loss of power because of the transmission, gearing, etc.
Still 200 at the wheels is SHIT with a 4.0L engine and a supercharger.... a stock XJ 4.0HO is rated at like 190hp at flywheel. So with all the drivetrain loss would drop it to about 150-ish HP at the wheels.

@@locomojo0485 you have to consider supporting mods, if this is a "BUILT" supercharged engine then yes only a 50hp gain with a dyno pulley is kind of questionable. However if this a stock 4.0l with just a supercharger and no intercooler then 50hp over stock and reliable Is a damn good improvement.
As far as Rpm goes for the 4.0L straight six these aint high Rpm engines with flat tappet cams, Overhead valve rather than an overhead cam.. Even built 4.0L engines are only pushing 6500-7000rpm Max.. Newcomer Racing built an 800hp 4.2 turbo stroker recently and even that was only about 6500rpm

Those who have pointed out that the 4.0 makes around 190 HP and 225 ft/lbs of torque are correct, and the argument that this is actual flywheel power doesn't hold true for the Cherokee. Yes, as with most vehicles you would assume that the actual number at the wheels would be lower due to drivetrain losses. However, as many manufacturers, including Chrysler, have been known to under-rate power numbers, this is the case with the Cherokee. Several Dyno tests have shown that a stock 4.0 Cherokee puts around 182 HP and 218 ft/lbs to the wheels, rather than a much lower number one would expect if the advertised crank power numbers were true.

This should say 200hp 300tq, with the 20% drivetrain loss. Which means this is fast for how light it is compared to my 2019 2.0 4x4, and just about anything. Wonder if he ever got some time slips with this build?

Ive had my 03' WJ RWD with the 4.0L 197k odo: Mods are K&N Cold Air Intake, 180° tstat, high flow tstat housing, gm 11 blade clutch fan, Harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers still on the stock exhaust manifold and pre cats (for now) Muffler delete, 3rd Cat Delete and ive dyno'd 227whp.. For a Supercharged 4.0L to only make 200whp on 5-6lbs of boost youve got something going on that shouldnt be going on.. At 5-6lbs of boost you should be at the very minimum 240whp 270-280lb ft
what people dont take into concideration when building stuff like this is that its still a 4.0 still on stock internals so hes not making much more than stock
Yeah this is real. It's mine and my son's. This is the first 'RaceJeep'. Love it or hate it. This was the first supercharger kit we made for the 4.0L. Have supercharged over 150 Jeep 4.0L since. Stock HP is 135 to the wheels, with supercharger 210 HP to the wheels. This jeep is 2WD, lowered, bilstein shocks, composite leaf springs, F+R sway bars, Mustang Cobra wheels, and we autocross it and kick ass. Those dyno numbers are probably about spot on. Figure you're starting with 190hp. Then factor in about 25 percent parasitic drivetrain loss gets you to 152hp. Then factor in an average loss due to engine wear of about 1 percent per year for 15 years when the video was made. That'll get you to 129hp. Then 5psi should get you around a 30 percent increase which is just shy of 168hp at the wheels.

I've seen some stock xj 0-60 vids and their tach needle goes up to 6k sometimes... i really don't get why jeep has a 7 or 8k tach or whatever if its limited to 4k? did they put the 8k tach to allow for power upgrades??? @@citydemo5701 The 4.0 has cam harmonics that are very dangerous to the motor above 5500 rpm to like 6,000. If it survives that range its got maaaaybe 800 more rpm to give. long stroke i6 motor is just not meant for high revs. All about the low rpm torque with these.

Im in the works of building a street WJ with the 4.0L, gonna throw a side mount supercharger at it n run about 15lbs of boost, giving supporting mods such as performer head, good flowing exhaust some roller rockers with a nice cam im expecting to run about 400whp, nothin crazy just make a fun street build, lower it a little bit throw some Nitto 555s at it should be nice
A m62 is the same blower on a 2.0 cobalt ss .. And its bearly enough for that i had 2 of them So i know for a fact on a motor double the displacment as a cobalt its just unefficent HOT. Air .. And way 2 small of a blower
Thats a '99? me n my wife has the sport 4door. N i think that they got the numbers wrong because in that year have the H.O. I6 in them putting out 190HP @ the wheels n 205ft.lbs. of torque. I added Accel Spark plugs wires n cap/rotor along with a K&N Cold Air Intake. Also with an Optima Red top battery to help better spark plug performance i also installed an Accel Ignition Coil n with all i just said our '98 XJ put out 215whp w/ 215ft. lbs of torque. I would love to add what you have on mine.
ths comment makes no sense at all. 4.0 compression is 9:1 same as a foxbody mustang 5.0 which benefits greatly from boost. compression ratio on t bird super charged is 8.6:1

You would NEED to run Methanol or race gas at that point to prevent detonation and im not so sure these jeeps have a knock sensor so its REALLY a good idea to do that. Why do you think most boosted cars have a compression ratio of around 9 or so? Higher HP NA cars have higher compression, but are much trickier to boost safely because of this.

Forced induction requires low compression to keep your gas from predetonating and destroying your engine. These things are built like tractor engines. Put some forged goodies inside and your in for a fun ride.
AlloyDiesel at 8 psi that should supply enough. typically a factory air box supply more than enough air. most likely had high flow filter so it shouldn't limit it. don't expect much from a S/C and no other upgrades.
I'm guessing this is 200hp to the wheels... but still, with a 4.0 and a supercharger and that's all you get?? My XJ is supposedly 190hp 225tq stock in 1996. minus 20% drivetrain loss would be in the 150hp to the wheel area. So that's a lot of work just to add 50hp.
Looks like shit TBH, especially since I've seen XJ's with the same size supercharger installed under the hood without cutting out a fucking hole, they also they got 175HP at the Dyno. Also I personally think 2door XJ's have a special place in hell for how bad they look.

Old 4.0s usually get about 90-100hp to the wheels, so this is a pretty big jump

Inline 6 motors just don't have the displacement and high compression ratios to benefit from a supercharger like V6 and V8 motors can.

I'm guessing this is 200hp to the wheels... but still, with a 4.0 and a supercharger and that's all you get?? My XJ is supposedly 190hp 225tq stock in 1996. minus 20% drivetrain loss would be in the 150hp to the wheel area. So that's a lot of work just to add 50hp.

I just like to say that the Jeep Cherokee is so cool
Looks like shit TBH, especially since I've seen XJ's with the same size supercharger installed under the hood without cutting out a fucking hole, they also they got 175HP at the Dyno. Also I personally think 2door XJ's have a special place in hell for how bad they look.
