My name is Greg, im literally here, and searched for this answer.
Great advice -- valuable insight (that can be sold to those willing to pay) can come from all sorts of places.
Thanks Derek!
thank you for this, your view on expertise is really eye opening!
Thanks this was very helpful sometimes the word expert can feel so intimidating, I'm switching jobs and it feels great to not focus too much on that word and focus on what I can do! 😊
Love this channel so much!! What I would say is you can take on the shoe store and pizza place as pro-bono clients to build your expertise further, to the point where you can start charging some amount - even a free pair of shoes or some pizzas for a pizza party. Eventually you start charging money!
Really clear - Thanks
Simple and to tbe point. Great advice!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this , straight to the point and a well thought of response . I have learned a lot on consulting in 6 minutes , thank you Jonathan . You have a new subscriber .
Welcome!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video 👍😎
I did this with my guitar lessons. I would always be one lesson ahead haha
Even if you're not an expert you can still be valuable by being outside the problem and offering a different perspective, saying the things the people involved want to say, or by confirming what your customer sees. Also, if you know about the problem and about what needs to be done (versus knowing the problem and knowing the solution) you can hire a subject matter expert - making you a project manager.
Really enjoying your content. On point, pragmatic and practical.
Thanks, Marc!
My 5 year old is an expert at My Little Pony. Too bad I'm not her target audience to get much value from her knowledge. 🙂
Roger that! LOL
A very thoughtful and well measured response.
Thanks Garry!
How would you go across doing consulting for late teens from 16-18 and helping them with college and their career path? Also resume building, cover letters, and helping them with their specific path
This field is called "College Admissions Consulting" so maybe a good first step would be to research that and see what you like/don't like?
I feel like I have more expertise in regular life issues but I don’t know how I would monetize that. So what area or niche of consulting is more in demand?
A reliable place to start is by deciding who you want to help and then apply (or acquire) the skills needed to help them get what they want. Thanks for the question!
Thanks @Jonathan for your insights, very valuable as always. Please allow me to add one essential set of skills that a consultant should have. A consultant should be able to define the problem, suggest a solution in a structured way that can be implemented and then has the ability o coach or mentor the client after that.
Well, it's pretty much happening to me today 😣😣
Awesome advice...thank you Sir
Hi. I'm working as an operations manager now. Total work experience is 11 years as operations, entrepreneurship, project management and marketing management. I'm up skilling to be able to land a managerial position at one of the top consultancy firm. I'm preparing for PMP, Lean six sigma green belt and some more business analytics skills. I'm even planning to gain some domain skills on software industry and sustainable development. My communication skills is alright and presentation skills need to improve. Though I'm preparing and going for certifications to increase my chances, im still concerned. What would be your suggestions for me?
Thank you.
At the risk of sounding glib, if you can take your skills use them to help people you like get what they want, you will do well in business.
I am scared I have a marketing consultant interview but I got no experience would I be successful in this field ?
Crisp and clear advise Thank you 😊
You're so welcome!
Awesome video Jonathan! Loved the "Hmmm" zoom in!
LOL! Thanks Michael :)
The Jonathan Stark Show I gave you a shoutout a few videos ago. Love your stuff!
do you need a professional degree to become a business coach or a consultant?
I mean web and UA-cam is flooded with so called Gurus preaching grow/scale your business, charge this/that....
How is a business coach different than a web marketing agency? Both work for clients success?
No, you just need demonstrable results
I'm an Eagle Scout. How can I turn that into a consulting service ha ha?
I’m an Eagle Scout looking to use that as something to get my foot in the door at a consulting firm lol.
This is a nonsense. Go back to school, get internships. Can't go back to school, get an internship, start your own firm, gain the experience apply somewhere, move on to something better. Create and leverage your network. Done..
Shady AF. You market yourself as an expert people expect an expert. Joe's Pizza thinks they are hiring an expert and ya you know more than them but you sure aren't an expert brand new.
How do you define an expert? What value could they create that a “brand new” person can not?
While I agree on people with skills getting paid appropriately etc billing yourself as an expert when you have no experience is bad news. How would you feel if you spent good money on an expert for your car only to find out when your wheels fell off that they had no actual training or experience, they were just "enthusiastic" about cars?
@@AlisonMeeks I went to school, so I have training on maths, history, and other subjects. Can I call myself an expert in these fields based on that? Or what kind of training and experience are you talking about?
I read the car manual and I'm sure the wheels won't fall off the car that I'm repairing. I also tried that on one car so I have experience. But I cannot build a car from scratch for you. Am I an expert for you if you don't need me to rebuild a car, just to fix the wheels?
@Alison Meeks Thanks for your feedback! I agree that misrepresenting yourself in your marketing is a horrible idea. My intent here (and perhaps I failed) is to get people thinking more broadly about how their life experience can be applied usefully for folks who are in need of said experience. For example, my father-in-law is not a worldwide expert on car repair (and would never refer to himself as such) but has rebuilt many classic cars from scratch. I'm totally useless when it comes to car repairs, so I consider him an expert compared to me and if I needed a new transmission, he'd be the first person I'd call. Cheers!
@@TheJonathanStarkShow Hey Jonathan - I'm sure not pigeonholing people that have actual experience (no matter how they got it) marketing themselves with their own expertise, and maybe I took it wrong but thought the question was someone without experience plugging themselves as a consultant. That was where my reaction came from. PS Props to your FIL on the classic cars rebuilds. Love them!
