This book should be made into an entire movie starting with this. This would be the perfect Fresh bit of Sci fi movie that is needed in Hollywood these days. We sci fi geeks are drowning in rehash, reboots and remakes. We need an Aurthur C. Clarke movie. WE NEED RAMA!!!
childhoods end would be a good movie too, in my opinion
The great thing about Clarke's books being adapted is it leaves a lot of room for screenwriters to flesh out some of the character personalities. Clarke always wrote his characters a little two dimensionally.
9 years later and your comment is still valid. please make a movie out of this!!
@@hellshade2 Not a perfect mini series but good enough
@@hellshade2 They made a series out of that one.
Denis Villeneuve will be doing Rendezvous with Rama!!!
The perfect man for the job…
Awesome work on Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune
This man is accumulating excellent work on some of sci-fi’s
best projects…👍🏻❤️😁
🎆 🎇 🎆
This a replay to myself of 2 years ago….
Denis has finished Dune Part 2
and I hated it. It’s no longer Herbert’s Dune, it’s now Villeneuve’s Dune. All the intrigue, politics, between the different groups has been stripped away…the Spacing Guild turned into toadies….ridicules….not a happy camper….
Couldn’t care less about his next addition….
Hi Folks,
Thanks for all the kind comments. This was my final project for my year in the Vancouver Film School Sound Design program. The amazing visuals were produced by Aaron Ross in New York in 2001, and he was kind enough to give me permission to use his film.
It was an absolute blast recording, editing, scoring and mixing this film, and VFS taught me everything I needed to know in order to get it just right. I'm honoured to be on the official VFS channel!

Good job!
Hope you are still working in the industry, it could do with more talented creators like yourself and Aaron
@@sofa-lofa4241 Thank you so much! I'm still in the industry but not to the degree I'd like to be.
I read the book sometime back and I think it's perfect for a movie like this! Nicely done!
@@NishanSaliya Thank you! All my hard work paid off because I might win an Emmy tonight! Crazy world.
Really, great job!
This is how the book starts. Awesome presentation, almost like seeing the written words come alive. Nice job.
No that's not how the book starts at all. In the book it was not heading for earth and the desire to discover it was out of curiosity and not out of a sense of danger.
Been waiting since the 70's for someone to make a movie....
Would be nice if Morgan Freeman ever finished his production of it, but it doesn't look like that is ever going to happen.
There's 3 more books worth of material too! Could do a tv series and really dig into it!
They built a Rama prop, but the movie fell through so they used it as a probe in Star Trek IV
Me too. read the book when it was first published. such wonderful imagery.
Me too!
I read the book for the first time in the summer of 1975. I've lost track of how many times I've read it since. An incredible story. This short film is amazing. I just hope that the movie gets made AND it continues to reflect the standards shown and set here. Thank you, Aaron Ross.
Read a few times then began listening to it. I think I must be over 100 by now.
Me too. Looking to read the whole series, again
Really great visualization of a great story. I hear Morgan Freeman has had the rights for years and it's a dream of his to make the movie. Hold out hope fans!
I hope so!
My thought is that Hollywood execs won’t green light another cerebral sci-fi movie. They’re always critically acclaimed but rarely make their money back.
@@chrissmith7669 Yes. There is no real villain in Rama which is a box they always wish to tick. I only read the first one. Perhaps in later books things changed, and they could incorporate that? However it would be good to see that first book made.
@@quatermass8 much like Star Trek the (slow motion ) picture was panned by many. Great movie but no “Kahn”
@@quatermass8 there weren’t really any bad guys in the other three books of the trilogy. The unknown and then our fellow man. No main boogie man role.
RAMA is far to large-scale a book to be made into a single movie. It deserves a Netflix series to truly bring to life this wonderful work!
This is visually stunning, even if the CGI is just a bit dated. I would watch a full version for sure.
There should have been 3 doors, The ramans do everything in three ;).
But a very good project, very professional. I hope freeman and fincher do continue with the real movie project.
Hope you get to work on the upcoming Denis Villeneuve film adaptation!
Amazing job guys!! I can't believe that there is not a movie about rama... the scene where Norton drops the flare in the center of the ship at 2:53... WHOA... makes my skin creeps with excitement! JUST LIKE THE BOOK... morgan freeman we need your voice here!
Well done, gotta love the concept! A.C.Clarke you rock buddy r.i.p.
I love this! Of all of Arthur C Clarke's books, this was the most mysterious and wonderful. I did not like the continuation of the story, the books that he did with another guy (forgotten his name) This is a most wonderful visualisation of inside Rama! And I love the music. In my college long, long ago I made myself an immersible world of memories with a most clunky piece of software called Infini-D! Now of course studios use Maiya to render the most amazing 3D and graphic worlds. But this piece is, for me, perfect. Thank you Aaron Ross. I keep it on my desktop forever!
That brings back some memories! When I read this in the 70's, I never imagined I'd be sitting here and watching it unfold on my monitor! That was awesome!!!
I've just finished another reading of the book that I have had in my collection for forty-seven years. It s clearly not the same book that you read when you made this video.
Yup. "detected it from light years away"? Not even close.
"it was coming to earth, meant for us"? Nope.
This is a trailer for a disaster movie, not a hard SF film based on Clarke's novel.
I hope they make a tv series of rama one day. I loved the books
Great video. If a movie doesn't come of this I'd love a six-part series on Netflix. Budgets for TV shows are pretty decent these days, providing the special effects are dealt with properly.
Please don't. Because Netflix would make unrelated and crappy 2nd and 3rd season before send it to the guillotine.
MinekEzQM It would require a huge budget to pull it off. I’m hoping the draw of a limited episode series would be enough to stop it after the first season. But I agree with you, it doesn’t need to go beyond the story.
I'd say a 4 hour movie first, then a series out of the other books.
Now we'll finally get a movie!
Wait.. no- in the book they didn't know what it was, it emitted no signal, they thought it was just a large asteroid.
SPOILER ALERT !!! this ain't the book ;)
@@martythemartian99 One should be very careful when making a movie based on one of the best science fiction stories ever. The story is excellent, and altering any aspect of it risks damaging what makes it excellent.
@@martythemartian99 Spoiler Alert: the creators could not read!
Honestly, don't call it Rama, if it's not Rama.
It's so easy to get the basics of the story right, it's so disgusting, if someone don't.
The clips is shiny, blinking bullshit.
@@martythemartian99 Well you got that right, this is sod all like the book.
It's just as I imagined it when I read it. Hope we get a full length adaptation one day
Then you didn't read it or you have early onset dementia, Rama only had one slash of shiny on the side from an impact, there was 3 of everything, it required 2 people to open the doors. Read a book, don't gloss over it.
@@couttsw I did read it, Internet Tough Guy (You'd use a different tone if we were standing face to face!). It was a while ago so I've forgotten some details. It's you who probably has early onset dementia. You make Joe Biden look like Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
The sounds were great, very convincing. The visuals also delivered the story extremely well. This is great; make a short film! (Or even a full length movie!)
I first read Rendezvous with Rama while spending a year at high-school in Coquitlam, BC. Thank you for the video.
Another one I'd like to see made into a movie or endless TV series... even in animation... is Ringworld. Hell that has all the potential to be a TV series running none stop for decades based on the size of Ringworld. One adventure after the other to the literal end of time and then they could turn around and go back the other way. Hell it would take years DECADES just to cross it sideways even on flycycles much less go all the way around.
#LarryNiven -> #MakeItSo
This was almost exactly as I pictured it in my mind, when I read the book. I hope to see this made into a full length movie.
I hadn't read the book in years but this is almost exactly as I remembered. Great job!
"We reached the ...FRONT DOOR" rofll
That. Was. Awesome! This really needs to be made into a movie.
Denis Villeneuve is planning to.
@@Nodux359 That would be worth waiting for.
@@jknott1003 Yes, I think his plan to this point is: Dune part 2, Dune Messiah, Rama.
I've been wanting, waiting and expecting someone ANYONE to make a full length feature movie out of this book and its sequels since I first read this book DECADES and DECADES and still more DECADES ago and NO ONE has taken up this project.
I'm not able or capable of doing so myself or I would have long ago done so.
So... what the HELL is the problem?
This as a movie series would be as popular or even more popular for their precious RATINGS than Star Trek and Star Wars. I'm now 70 years old and I'm afraid I will die of old age before SOMEONE ANYONE takes this project on. C'mon producers, Directors, Actors, #MovieMakers #MakeItSo and soon! I'm not getting any younger!
@jbf Perhaps true of Rama but not ringworld that one is perfect because you could write in even what your imagination could not conjure to suit those precious ratings. I'd prefer a long running Tv series if I was 30 years younger but now I'd be happy a one-hour CGI-style documentary based on either storyline or even a cartoon/animation version.
So much #Potential so few willing or able to #MakeItSo.
It's coming...
Ojala hagan la pelicula o serie a la brevedad, pero que no sea como el espanto que hicieron con EL FIN DE LA INFANCIA, que me parecio malisima.......
Please don't get me wrong, this is great work. Wonderful CGI. It's just a pity that in the details, it's not very close to the book - just a few examples: There was no "signal" broadcast; there were THREE entries, and each was actually THREE sequential cylinders ("The Ramans do everything in threes") that each rotated 90 degrees to allow access to the next; the thrust on The Endeavours would have been pointing in the other direction, towards Rama, not away, as it *slowed* *down* to approach Rama; and there was no (rotationally-created or otherwise) artificial gravity on The Endeavor. But I know full-well that I am nit-picking and a purist. Regardless, this is very impressive CGI work.
That is mind-blowing. My deepest respect to the creators of this.
Read the book, then try again, they clearly did not.
For anyone that hasn't heard, the same guy that directed the latest Dune is working on a movie for this book. Can't wait.
This is absolutely amazing. This is the movie that played in my head when I first read (then reread) the book. YOU need to be involved in the full-scale making of this movie.
I didn't notice the last time I watched this that they changed the story a bit. Aimed at Earth, emitting a signal but overall still amazingly done.
Excellent reproduction of what my Imagination saw as I read the book. Good Job..
Brilliant !! This is pretty much how I pictured the trailer for the actual movie being ... amazing work guys
This won't be a movie one day it will be a documentary.
Посмотрите, во что превратили легендариум профессора Толкина :-/ Нафиг такую документалистику....
It makes no sense, this book needs a film adaptation NOW.
just..WOW. If they make a full length film, I will most certainly watch.
I would travel 400 miles and camp outside the theater.
I am a very green Sci-Fic reader. This story by Mr Arthur Clark was exceptional wonderful. The story could be in silent as space atmosphere just intro the background then Rama cames, human visit and observe, Frightened, Rama leaving. ??!! What a masterpiece.
Oumuamua
@Equivalent Exchange yeah it was only a space rock . Not exactly a Rama unfortunately .
yeah, i wish it is
They got a cream for that... 😃
My favorite sci fi book and book series ever and i hope that if someday theres a movie out of these novels you guys will make it. You captured perfectly the mystery and awe of the begining of the story. I want more !
Rama was never a book series. It came , it saw, I greeted the sun and left just as quickly as it arrived. No series there dude.
I want more. Don't leave me hanging from the cliff, especially since this is probably all there will be of Rendezvous with Rama
Clarke was a genius..he wrote this way ahead of his time..i would say atleast 50 70 year ahead.. i also think despite everything we still lack the technical advancements to make a movie...still a long way to go..
Well, Denis Villeneuve is on the case now!
Rama was published in 1973. Not sure if the concept of huge O'Neil cylinders visiting other solar systems existed in 1900s or 1920s science fiction, I guess technically you're right.
Nice work.
I remember getting it out of the library and trying to wrap my head around something so massive and which widened the scale of the universe into something way bigger than Trek.
The sequels trashed that idea.
WOW!!!!!!! I read that Netflix is funding this. Filming now 11/22/21
Off to a good start! This book needs to be made into an epic movie, that's true to the book in every detail.
1st book: 5stars
2nd book: a peace of shizzle!!!
why wont steven spielburg make this into an actual movie?
The only thing wrong with Rama 2 was the overdeveloped characters! Sheeesh... it goes on and on and on and on in Character development to the point of NAUSEA. Every time I read book 2 I literally skip the first half of it and start reading when they enter Rama 2.
I understand character development as a necessary evil BUT holy crap I did not need to read every second of Nicole's tortured and abused childhood to figure out she was a bitchin woman and the main character.
All of that development of her character could have been done in 500 words or less instead it went chapter after chapter after chapter and every character in the book had the same lengthy development thousands and thousands of unnecessary words. Oh well, just skip it after you have read it the first time but you do have to read all of that the first time or you will be left behind in Rama 2. (grins) Forgive the punny.
@@MrBlack.
I totally agree about the second book.....But the third book "Garden Of Rama" and the fourth "Rama Revealed" were excellent. Especially the parts when the Rama ship make it to it's destination with the trapped humans. It's a space ship yard called the Node. We are never introduced to the Ramans unfortunately, but it's very exciting and bizzare all the same..
@@alexcastro7339 Weren't those aliens at the node the actual Ramans? The one's giving a kind of immortality/lengthening of life to Nicole. I thought they were the creators of Rama the way they change things in the RAMA for new alien species they collected like the avian s and so on? And were those octospiders and actual alien species or were they 100% artificial...? I think I need to go read the last book again? (grins) It has been a long time now since I read them. And YES Lucas/Spielberg get off your rich fat old asses and make this into an unbelievably great series of movies or TV shows and then do the same for Larry Niven's Ring word series. Geezz that one could have a run of decades on a TV series shows just getting across the ringworld much less all the way around it. (grins)
@@MrBlack. I agree, was thinking that other writer did that to fill the volume. someone could easily go thru and remove all that non fiction crap with no harm to the main story.
@@MrBlack. ; Not as i recall. They operated the node but didn’t build Rama as I recall
gj aaron. i'd have to say though that there's no gravity on rama's axis.. :)
I read the novel many years ago. A very enjoyable and thoughtful story. Well done with this video!
I read this novel eons ago.
Too bad I did not see the "spider bots". I imagined Rama as an ovoid.
This rendition is way cooler.
Very cool. Loved the series, read them all as a young man and 50 yrs later I still remember the characters and story and also, it was the series that made me realize incredible Arthur C. Clarke really was.
What series, it was one book.
@@couttsw i beg your forgiveness oh wise one, i read it 30 years ago so sorry i misspoke, sheez!
I really wish Rendezvous With Rama was made into a movie.
BEAUTIFUL...... OH GOSH I WAS THINKING THIS BOOK DESERVES A MOVIE. Nowadays we have technical capabilities to reproduce that universe...... Or a TV show, if you will, so no details are left behind
Fantastic! Loved the book and to say this does it justice is a huge understatement. Bravo!
I WISH! This man could make the whole movie
This is really well done. Nice work.
Amazing, alien technology and they instantly know where to get in and how to open the door.
I have long wished this series to be made into feature films. One science issue in this presentation is the claim our satellites first noticed Rama several light years away when it emitted a signal. Aside from a signal typically would be moving at the speed of light, the issue of it being at that distance would mean a very lengthy time before arrival. Unless it was moving faster than the speed of light, or close to the speed of light, one would expect a minimum of hundreds of years before arrival. I would have to go back to the book to see, but wasn’t it first noticed as it was entering our solar system?
There are some problems with this footage. In the book everything was done in 3's. Three locks per door, three doors before getting inside etc.
@James Bryant I don't see the central sea either that separated the north from the south, it had a huge wall on the south side for when the water surged due to acceleration before it froze.
@@johnprice5784 I literally didn't see a single thing that lines up with the book other than the fact that it's a big tube that's smooth on the outside, and that the flare had a delay.
Maybe that was them at the 3rd door 😅
AND a counter clockwise turning of the door latches too... to gain entrance. There I go picking apart the only representation of RWR. (Shakes my head)
There should be no gravity where that man is.
As I remember, Rama was the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.
Создатели, хранители и разрушители. Полный набор ;-) Мне нравятся индийские мифы.
GREAT WORK👍!
MORGAN FREEMAN has wanted to produce this for years but can't get financing..David Fincher was attached to Direct (Seven, Fight Club, Social Network) but it fell apart unfortunately.
Netflix is now filming this 9/6/21
Beautiful visualization of Arthur C. Clarke's concept!
One of my favorite stories, but it's actually a pretty simple story. I'm all for a live action movie but I have my doubts that it can be pulled off. I think Hollywood is burning so looking outside of that dumpster would have the best chance. The main danger if they screw it up is that a lot of classic sci-fi stories that are being considered for movies would probably be abandoned immediately and probably wouldn't get another chance for a couple generations. In reading the book the imagination of the reader does most of the heavy lifting, expertly guided by the writing. CGI is what would make or break a movie adapt. It absolutely must be the most epic, on the widest screen, and with the most perfect score. It's got to convey that Grand Canyon feeling that makes you forget to breathe for a second. I love this story but I'm also hopeful for all the other classics that might be green lit if Rama does well.
Let Denis Villeneuve make it, seems like the only choice
Well then nm, apparently it was reported that he will direct it last month! haha
@@jichaelmorgan3796 damm you're a legend
Morgan Freeman would love to see a full length movie made based on Rendezvous With Rama! It would be nice to see him star in it too!
"It was headed for Earth. It was meant for us." - Not the Rama in Arthur C. Clarke's story, which did not make a close approach to Earth.
"The satellites picked it up just a few light years away when it emitted the briefest signal, almost as it announcing its arrival." - Again, you're way off Clarke's novel, in which Rama was spotted somewhere beyond the orbit of Jupiter, and emitted no signals at all. It was travelling so slowly that, if it had been spotted light years away, it would have been under observation for thousands of years before reaching the inner Solar System.
Hope this helps!
Before i die, would love to see the movie.Someday.
Nice, well done!
*sigh* I've been waiting for this movie since high school. You did an amazing job.
Excellent sound with visual.
See you soon.
Very good guys you need to do a kickstarter for a full length feature. Morgan Freeman really wants there to be a Rendezvous‘s with Rama movie made.
Beautiful video much better and professional than it could be expected from a student. I'm pretty sure about that you will get kudos soon and go very far in the visual multimedia designing ;)
Anyway, the book is also fascinating too except the conception of the 'artificial gravitation' made by rotating of Rama. (according to the first law of motion due to Newton none of bodies could be took effect of g-force in a rotating cylinder unless it's affixed to the inner surface strongly)
Exactly how i imagined it ! Awesome thanks!
Nice! One my Clarke favorites!
This would be a multi million dollar winner,,,,bigger than Star Wars, not to mention the spin off movies ,,loved the books read them twice
that would make an absolutely amazing movie. VFS should fund this to be a movie.
Just finished reading the novel. Good job on the adaptation :)
Those are the spacesuits from Red Planet!
Well, at least they covered the name patch.
If this fantastic teaser could be extended into a film, boy.......
This is a great series of books. I hope it is made into a series of movies
Original book was incredible, the sequel on the other hand was utter pants....
Yeah, it wasn't just Clarke writing the sequel. I couldn't even finish reading it.
@@scott6504 It's best to pretend the sequel books never happened.
Delighted that someone did this. After that meteor Omuamua , almost seems prophetic
Fantastic! gripping...
Fine artwork! I'd say this novel 'Rendezvous with Rama' is 'inhabited', by something malignant. Blessings +
I need more!! I NEED!! I NEED!!!
Amazing how something so impressive has not hit 100,000 views after nearly a full decade. Meanwhile, the video, "MOST Stupid People on PLANET Compilation 2017 | MUST SEE ! ! ! ! ! ! !" has garnered 4.4 million views in less than two years.
Coming soon..... hopefully!!!
if Hollywood made this into a movie only badness would come of it im sorry to say.let it live in ower minds
+James Baxter yes! leave ower minds alone!
Morgan freeman is really intent on making a movie of it for a while now. If he ever gets to it I think he could do it quite well
I agree...It would get terribly ass raped by p.c. bullshit.
i disagree if the same people who did interstellar or the martian like chris nolan this movie would be fine
Interstellar was pure ass gravy and so is Chris Nolan.
Congratulations for the good work!
Now only if someone would do the movie for real...and also consider "The Songs of Distant Earth" as well. Who wouldn't want to see the quantum drive in operation? What a light show it would be!
Oh my greatness, love this. Except where is the doctor?
I know this is old, but someone has to make a continuation of this. It's a book I have read quite a few times.
Bravo, a great short film for a great book
I see many elements and inspiration from Kubrick's 2001, bur the video overall is amazing
Nice! More of that...!
Cool spacesuits from the Movie Red Planet.
well done. this your resumé for getting on the film project
Gracias a este vídeo pude visualizar mejor lo que estaba leyendo
P.D un buen librazo.
Loved the 4-book series!
