It’s better to learn under trees than not to be educated - NPP MPVincent Assafuah

  • The Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has defended the Free Senior High School policy, asserting that it should not be reviewed, as it is better for students to study under trees than to go uneducated.
His comment comes in response to calls for a review of the Free SHS policy.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, opposes these calls, stating that the policy does not require any review.

I studied in Morocco for my bachelor’s and master’s degree. In Morocco education is free on all levels - even to doctorate degree level. You only pay for your hostel and buy your books which are relatively affordable. So free education for the population is possible; we just have to learn from those doing it but our leaders will never do that. They will keep the masses in poverty so they can control us.

I was actually thinking about this hours before you guys posted this video
    1. There should be a law where the parliamentarians and ministers kids should attend our public schools, even if your kids are outside the country, they have to come into the country before you can run for these positions, if your are a minister and you will watch for your kids to attend these Ghana public schools then it’s up to them.
    2. No minister or MP kids or family relatives should ever receive Government scholarships to travel abroad to study
    3. No minister or mp should have a rush motorcade on our roads, where are they always rushing too? If they want to get to parliament on time or to wherever they are going on time they can also leave home on time like every average Ghanaian. If they make good roads they won’t be rushing through traffic.

Then i can also say it's better for our MPs to use bicycles and motorcycles than spending too much on V8 Convoy. He happens to be my MP and im really disappointed in this NPP Government bcos I expected much from them. In this century, our leaders are not ashamed of how under developed our Motherland is. This year, some of us have wised up. I will rather vote for Nana Kwame Bediako than vote for NPP or NDC, the youth should vote for change, you see how people are suffering in this country.

That MP should be voted out of office for making such an egregious statement. The “Free SHS” needs a serious overhaul. How could Ghanaian kids studying under trees compete with students who are well equipped with better infrastructure? Our priorities as a country is misguided. The politicians don’t care because they send their wards overseas for education and they spend the country’s resources on their flamboyant lifestyle. Almost 67 years after independence and we cannot afford basic education and healthcare for our people. 😂.

Ghanaian, and most African politicians have continued to benefit from an uneducated citizenry. As unethical as it is, we continue to see it happen and it has rendered our democracy useless.
When you look at Ghana for example, you see the effects of such a practice.
    1. Simplified Messaging: Politicians have resorted to simpler, more emotionally driven rhetoric that appeals to basic instincts rather than reasoned argument.
    2. Control Over Agenda: Politicians have found it easy to control the political agenda with their communicators since the public is not well-informed enough to introduce or demand discussion on complex or nuanced issues.
    3. Easier Manipulation: Less educated individuals may be more susceptible to propaganda or misleading information, making it easier for politicians to manipulate public opinion.
These are just a few examples but we see it happening in real time.

The fact that education is free doesn’t mean it should be of poor quality. In the US education is free until the tertiary level (where state owned schools are sponsored by the government so it is subsidized) - tax payers money
That statement is very uncalled for and he should be ashamed for such utterances.
My sister is in high school and their terms are messed up. Sometimes they go to school for few weeks and then come home for another batch to replace them.
Recently, the form 1 shs students went to school for a few weeks before Christmas for a term.
Ghana is playing with her future by compromising education.

You are making a point but you should situate it well.
We are talking about Free SHS.
First, what problem did it sought to address.
Juxtapose his comments with the objective of the policy.
Now your comments are about being comfortable with current state and lack of will to make it better.
His comment is about the implications of the review because almost all the proposals for review comes with financial commitment from parents.
The questions that must be answered should be "would the financial commitment bring discrimination and also leave people behind?
    Now can address the two.
Most of the time we bring emotions into certain discussion and it affects our judgement.
