I review the "western"(?) novel Call of the Canyon by Zane Grey. Spoilers abound.
    Books mentioned:
Call of the Canyon by Zane Grey
Showdown on Hogback by Louis L'Amour
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Michael K. Vaughan's Thoughts on Westerns:

Story time with James never fails to delight. I'm reading Pete Dexter's 1986 dark and twisted (and often funny) novel Deadwood.

Just looked up Deadwood and that sounds like a real corker. Looks like Thriftbooks is getting another sale.

I think of you as "Floss" so I was picturing the insurance commercial lady riding around on horses.

Not read any Zane Grey. Read a few Louis L'Amour and found them all a good fun read so far. Happy reading!

L'Amour is like a modern action film compared to the quaint Dr. Grey, DDS.

Nice review - or summary, I should say. I'm also doing June on the Range this month and finished my L'Amour book. I'm trying to get into the Zane Grey novel and am not having the best time of it. Also reading The Ox-Bow Incident this week. The last Zane Grey book I read (last June) had a rich land owning woman from back east paired with a drunk cowboy who was really IMO unworthy of her. But she just couldn't help herself from falling into his arms. Maybe it is a theme in Zane Grey novels.

That's an interesting observation about Zane Grey, Linda. I did find some of this a slog, short as it was.

@@JamesRuchala - You're lucky you chose a short Zane Grey novel. Last year I read "The Light of Western Stars". It was mostly okay except a chapter in the middle of the book when the characters were playing golf - which was the worst slog ever, for me. A terrible, useless chapter! This year I'm reading one where I already know almost everyone dies, so it is a bit depressing. "To The Last Man" is based on a true-history war between families in Arizona. I have a 10-hour audiobook available from the Cloud Library.

I read Zane Grey’s Riders of the Purple Sage, and one of the three main characters was female. Of course, much of the novel was about the villains trying to force her into a polygamous marriage “where she belonged,” but still, Grey featured a very strong female character!
Great reading, James! Lots of fun!😊

Thanks for watching, Pat. I first read that bit about the polygamous marriage and thought it very modern that two men were trying to marry her at the same time, but of course that's not it. I'm sure Carly Burch would have a whole spiel about polyamory if Call of the Canyon was written today.

@@JamesRuchala right-not very modern at all! I am glad I read a Zane Grey novel, but I don’t see myself spending much more time with his books.

I wouldn't read these with a six-shooter pointed at my head, but your take on this one was fun. I'm always curious about how careless these people were about health and safety since most illness and injury were lethal then and there without penicillin or doctors nearby.

Not my usual bill-of-fare either, pardner, but it's fun for a change. The Westerners in this one certainly thought they were living a much more healthy and safe lifestyle than the jazz-besotted easterners.

The Louis Lamour im reading, Conagher, also has a main pov character that is a woman.

Is it good? I'm sure these writers tilt heavily towards the male, but I thought it was funny that the one I got by random at the thrift store was neither male-pov, nor gunplay-intensive.

@@JamesRuchala I’m liking it so far. Same for me…I bought this on sale last year to read for June on the Range this year without knowing anything about it.
