Legend mate. I been coming since 2015, moved here in 2020 and this place has changed radically. Used to fairly chill in Ulu area and now its all just looking like canggu. Still love it here compared to america every now and then you can catch the Bali magic. Its still alive but not sure what its going to happen here in the next 5-10 years. The amount of kooky expats investors coming and building resorts and villas in next level. Thanks for the videos!
Finally a Bali you Tuber whos been around, and knows the island and what he’s talking about. Personally after surfing Uluwatu and being a regular visitor since 1992 I can’t cop Bali anymore. It’s been lost to over development and commercialism.
Yea its a bit of a concrete jungle nowdayz mate.
My first trip to Bali was in 1978. Inspired by the movie, Morning of the earth. As you say, it truly was paradise. We walked a couple of kms through farmland and down through a cave to get to Uluwatu.
We rode pushbikes everywhere. All through Legian was just rice paddies.
It's very different now and such a shame.
Yea those days are gone now mate.
Just moved here with my wife and daughter 2 weeks ago, my wife is a local Denpasar girl, after over 14 years living in Australia shes back and everyone is happy, i have been coming here since late 80s and yes was alot different then.
Yea my wife wasnt that happy in australia when we went home to have the kids ..so we came.strait back
Great video. Thanks for the journey.
Glad you enjoyed it mate 😊
More great content Grant 👌
Thanks mate😊
Careful mate, talking about sanur in a certain way, you'll have old Super Gary carrying on like a goose with his channel. Just found your channel, mate, and it's really interesting to watch. 👍👍
Classic, I know what you're talking about
Dont think i was talking about sanur haha and whos Gary? Anyway my opinion might be different to others . Is he one of those expats that thinks he is above everyone else haha
Thats him@@SouthernCrossGO
@ he's a Pom that just gave crap to a local vlogger named Krisna and have f'd up majorly lol. Keep it real as you do mate.
Yea well youtube goes to some peoples head they think they are important haha i just do this to keep busy and so my kids can see what im doing@@wanderlustasia
Enjoying this bro. Hearing about the old bali and what foreign money has done to my country😊😊
yea mate its Changed a lot

Glad you found it helpful mate. Life is short.Travel mate👍
@
I would love to come over and see you Guys…
Unfortunately..!! My heart has been given me a lot of grief.,
I don’t know if I can get travel insurance..!!
I am glad you are having a wonderful life over there.
Cheers 🍻
Nice to reminisce with you I miss Bali in the late 80's and 90's. I've always had a love hate relationship with the place but still return. I moved to Sumatra in the mid 90's and as you say it's super cheap compared to Bali. I moved to the Philippines early 2,000's and it's still like Bali was back then, especially the surf towns. 👍
Yea its changed. Philipines is.on my list. Havent been there yet😊
@ I think your and your sayang will love it here. The food is not as good as Indo, Viet or Thailand though.
Good video. I agree with most of what you have to say. I've been here 35 years living up in the north. If I was to move to Southeast Asia today, I'd look at the Philippines or Vietnam or Laos. Take care.
Yea i been spending a couple months a year im vietnam lately. I like it there
Can’t retire to Vietnam!
@@beach26edda why not? Is 3 month visa for vietnam. Just have to fly in -out every 3 months
Inflation starting to bite a bit , prices have gone up a bit in the last year , good to see some improvements at the airport
Yeah the airport is much better now, but prices are a problem everywhere these days.
I first went there to surf in 1986. I ended up working for Intrepid Travel from 1996 to early 2001, leading adventure tours throughout Indo. I have been married to an Indonesian for nearly 25 years, but now live on King Island Australia. IMO, Bali has seen a lot of change and has become overcooked. What was promoted has been stolen from the unique lifestyle. The best time to experience Bali was from the 70's to end of 90's.
Yea mate i agree😊
My introduction to Bali… if I didn’t get a surf in after school I would head down to the local David Jones TV section and politely ask if they could put on Tubular Swells on one of their new VCR. So first trip to Bali was in 1980, Ullawatu, Kuta reef, a place up woop woop now called Canggu. Nusa Lembongan, fast boat was an Outrigger with a sail and a small outboard and boy did we shit our selfs😅😆. We stayed with family(Tarzan was the chief) and I think there was only one hotel, just in front of Shipwrecks. Have been coming ever since and now live here. Has it changed, yes but so has my home town, have the Balinese people changed, no. Have the people changed where I grew up, yes.
Yea Tarzins was the only place they were building a government losmens wich i think ended up being Agungs next to the old Mainski. Lembongan was untouched then
Have to say, I much prefer Java to Bali. I remember in the 80s and 90s the big thing was 'parabola' or satellite TV. They sprung up like mushrooms. Then, later on it was mobile phone shops everywhere. Since the end of Suharto, various governments have stripped subsidies which has resulted in a huge reduction in rice cultivation and ultimately a faster pace of life for most Indonesians imo. Like your content Grant. Keep it up.
Yea java is nice. Its under rated and much cheaper than Bali. 😊
Close to one of my favourite restaurants. Das Bistro.
Yes i did a video on Das Bistro about a month ago. About the 50k rp breakfast
Woo hoo, let’s go for a walk in Bali, show me some golden nuggets or coins. Oh heck even some relishes dishes of food, yummmmy 😅
something different , walk around vids easy to make haha
I heard your No 15 on the G 20 summit 😂😂,
That’s progress mate
When everything is cheap people will come because life everywhere getting too expensive
17 years here crazy but crazy all over this planet 😊 Lol
Yea the world is wierd these days mate😂
I come to bali 1996. Wow. Amazing. People. Food. Girls. Clubs. Beaches. I worked here 2003 till 2018 kira kira. Now i married. I live with my balinese wife. Yes Bali was cheap but now still cheap foods but many expensive also. I was here when september 11. Bali bomb 1 and 2. Wow so much change in Bali.
Yea its not the same bali as 80,s & 90,s
Thanks for another great video Grant.
I live in WA and started travelling to Bali in the 80’s, the 80s and 90s were fabulous. My first stay was in Sanur travelling through the rice fields on an unsealed road in the back of a Bimo, they were the days. 🤩Occasionally I still hop in a Bimo in Sanur to get to the south end.
I stayed in Kuta/Legian from the 90s to about 2010, then back to Sanur. My husband is Bali’d out so I now go solo.
Yea mate , i know a lot of people say they wont come back too busy now. Its changed but still better lifestyle and cheaper than australia to live
Great stories to share. Do you have any old photos of Bali back in its time?
My first time I went was 1988 when I was 18. It was so different and what a paradise then.
I’ve been back many times but to me, it’s lost that feel. Thailand is much better and more beautiful.
I love your videos.
Yea thailand is good i go twice a year. But Vietnam is my favorite nowdayz love it there
I love Bali. I beem here half my life 23yrs. Plus in and out 5yrs. I loved what Bali taught me. I thonk everybody changed during covid. After covid. Covid was damaging. Now too many VILLA in Bali. Too many shops. Prices up. I think wworldwide. The world is all broken. Bali has mamy beauty. Indonesia has many beaitys
Island. People. Cultures. People need to respect Bali more. Stop building in Bali. Thank you Bali. A great place on earth
Save Bali. Think think think. Peace ❤
The bali government.said they.are going to slow down building soon
Went there first in 79 to NusaLombongen 1$ anite at Tarzan's then back to Kuta or Legain to surf and party mush'es haven't been since co vid iv seen on telly now i cry at least i had at it best .makes me laugh when i see vlogs saying go to lombongen its like bali used to be???? What ajoke as for the traffic they can have it ive seen the best leave to the rest,Salmat Mimpi❤❤😊😊😊😮😮😮😢😢😢
Yea i used to stay at Tarzins . Was nothing built in the whole lagoon. The good ol days are gone mate😢
Lost Bali books , good yarns by good people , Morning of the earth lit the fuse .. Serangan what a gem , hop on ya scooter let’s see what’s going on there 🤔
Hate to say it living on the Gold Coast is cheaper now, but we return every year to revisit loves lost , whilst drinking Bintangs . All good just different 🙏🏻
Yea Bali has changed a lot
Some say paradise lost
First time Bali for me was mid 1980,s,Its not just Bali same thing happened in Thailand and the Islands, Now Phu Quoc island in Vietnam, Still go but glad we see Bali as it was then, we only go to Candi Dasa now.
Yes i like vietnam i just went to Phu Quoc in november very quiet i like it sort of like bali before tourism took over
I am Belgian, living on the island for 31 years. Yep the ninetees were the most fun. Something's has been changed for the better, some for the worse. But overall, still the best spot on the world to live your life.
Yea life is better tham many countriea here. I just stay away from the tourist areas these days
What was the name of your bar in Legian?
Cafe Dong. Then i changed it to Subway station and had a fake sunway sandwich bar .Its now called 16 degrees in benesari street
This is honest! It was the same Thing when I left Costa Rica. Now look at it 😕😳
Nice to meet you mate. Yea 90s were good could easily get around, and sanur was a sleepy quiet gem completely stuffed now but when we come down from lovina we still stay there but geez the inside road is horrendous , might check out with the family where you are filming today at a later date . Cheers
Oh the lake yea . I often go there its quiet and relaxing. Look for that statue for the G20 on the bypass near the galleria. The other side.of the lake is good
@SouthernCrossGO roger
Where exactly is that location you were walking.
Sort of behind the Galleria shopping mall
I recently spent 2 weeks in Sanur , I know 2 weeks is not enough anywhere, But not for me , to expensive, My preference is Thailand and Cambodia ,
Sanur is a bit touristy, you should check out Lombok , its much cheaper and nicer
You sound like you did the early days just like me and my mates.
Yea mate was so different back in them days😊
Seminyak to Canggu traffic , is a write off mate , they should of never allowed so much development , until there was a decent highway road in
Yea i never go near canggu anymore traffic is crazy😊
Is the black dog yours as well he keeps following you
No. Just a street dog. I just have Lucy
It'd be good to live there for a short periods, maybe use it as a home base and get into the non-tourist lifestyle to calm the demons of constant travel. Last couple of trips I've used Bali as a stop-over from Oz for a night either side of my travels and haven't enjoyed the place unless I have my bicycle.
Yeah Bali can be a bit crazy, especially with the traffic and tourist crowds. it can be a bit too much.
The same tragedy occurs everywhere when a G20 summit takes place. The big guys rule and we have to try to make our lives a little more comfortable. 👍🤠
Yea they spent millions just to impress the g20 leaders
29 years and its chungoo or leggyun...maaateee
Grant dont forget oscars, i'm still here pome pete.
the world is a massive Safari for those who are Seekers
It's way to big to get planted in one spot, even Oz is a life's journey to really see it all
Bali is sadly a Cash Cow for Indo hard currency, their notes are pure #rse wipes
I go to Bali about every 5th yr, its just a cheap 4 weeks blitz on the turps and feast fest
The hotel crew know me, I get the same room with private pool and transport
the money changers are honest, what more in life can you ask for?
Yea mate plenty other asian countries to explore
Move North, l never see a tourist, suits me.Live in a quiet village with my Balinese wife. You can keep the circus of the Sth . It's like Disneyland
Yea its not the same these days
@SouthernCrossGO that's why l moved up North
29 years yikes, I live in WA I like Bali but in no way could I live there
Yea it becomes boring after a while . I travel a lot to other asian countries
@@SouthernCrossGO That's the way mate, have you been to Japan? A lot of WA people I hear are going there
@@TravelTimeAsia no never been there. But its on the cards for sure :)
Greed is biggest problem and ruined Bali.
Oh and Russians 🤦🏻♂️
Yea many russians here now
Wow ! Looks like a lot of bitching going on.
Watch who you want no competition. Nothing worse then nit picking.
If you dont agree what people are saying dont watch .
Thank you Grant this is the stuff you don't hear about.😊
@@debraevans6944 yea people seem to like hearing about the old days i might do a vid about the early bali once a month. Yea has been a.lot drama about some youtuber.from sanur bagging a local tuber. Way to kill your channel i recon or get deported haha i just do my own thing & not really fussed on being a famous channel. Just keeps me busy because i stopped drinking haha
@SouthernCrossGO
Good morning Grant
Love listening to your videos.
I lived in Bali before covid for a bit. On the Peninsula.
Stayed in my own lane minded my own business.
But one nastie person from WA mad my life miserable being on my own I thought it best to return to Australia.
I have grown a lot since then.
My friend and I are coming over for a few weeks staying in Sanur.
I come to Bali at least 3 times a year.
I have noticed a big change but no matter I will still come i love the place . have no interest in changing Bali I just want to holiday and enjoy my time. Maybe we can catch up around d the traps .
Keep up the good work my friend.
