Thank you for the clarification! I purchased the Filtrete 2800 to make the masks and have come across people saying there is fiberglass in it and not to use it. I could not find a definitive answer on this until now. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this and your due diligence on your research. I have also been doing research and getting very scared with people blatantly (but understandable I guess) video's using hepa filters and have been posting this warning on their channels. I'm scared using hepa will make people very sick and trying to warn people. If I may post my warning here and please feel free to use it if you like. WARNING!! PLEASE DO NOT USE HEPA FILTERS... THEY ARE MADE OF FIREGLASS AND THE PARTICLES BREATHED IN ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. ua-cam.com/video/qiYbXsIcI7E/v-deo.html and here..... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2739167/ They are dangerous to wear against your mouth and nose. They are made for vacuums and air purifers that are not in direct contact with your face. Please do your own research. There are also reasons why some of those filter are high ratings, in my opinion, is the way they are made, their design. They have many layers in their designs to help with the filter standard. Pulling those filters apart and using the fabric for a single layer in a mask will do nothing for protection. So unless you use the filter and all it's layers and concertina design you will not be protected to that grade. I haven't found definitive research on this as yet though. •
Thank you so much for all your hard work, in research and development of these masks. You are literally a life savior, and not just as a pediatrician. God bless 🙏
@@MyPocketPediatricianmy only suggestion is trying to incorporate a one-way valve to aid exhalation. something like what in on the 3m or even the way we seal a sucking chest wound. (I'm also a former EMT).
I’m not certain how the exit valve works but it seems like you wold need something small, plastic (or just hard) , had holes and something easily attainable. My first thought was the metal salt and pepper tops that are popular at restaurants, but like I said I’m not sure how the valve works so this might not be good at all. Maybe something used for hardware and pipes. Or even a plastic bottle lid with holes melted into the cap? You might be able to secure the bottle with strong glue?

It's obvious that you have put a TREMENDOUS about of effort into this video. It is absolutely amazing and very informative. My daughter asked me today to make masks for her family and employees. Also, I have a sister who is a paramedic and I see her stress, so I can't even imagine the stress of anyone having to go to work each day and feeling so unprotected. Actually, not working right now, is a blessing. I've been researching as much info as I could find, so I could make masks that are as effective as possible under the circumstances. You gave me so much to go on. I know none of us will make the perfectly protective mask, but if we at least try, we'll be helping. Thank-you so much.

Thank you for your research and videos. I also spent several hours researching this as well, 3M Filtrete filters contain electrostatically charged filter media made of polypropylene and polyolefin plastic, and capture particles that measure between 0.3 - 10 microns in size. polyolefin is non toxic and polypropylene is used in making straws, yogurt containers and things like that. It is considered a low toxin plastic. Both materials are considered generally safe and neither contain fiberglass. All this information can be found with a search. I am not a healthcare provider nor am I an expert. I am just part of the general population who did some research. It is my opinion that these masks are a great alternative. Thank you again for your hard work!! Stay safe all!
Thanks! That's what I found as well. I can't get anyone to confirm it's safe to wear up against your face and till continue to filter viral particles because that's not the intended use, but those were my findings as well. I appreciate your research.
@NorthernCaliWay you need to post your msg on the main public post reply to the girl who made the video... she may be able to answer your question fr you😉 stay safe😊 ,.... txt from Ontario Canada😊
Here's the problem. Once you've exhaled one or 2 moist warm breaths, you have effectively doused the material in water, so I'm doubtful there's any electrostatic charge taking place after that. In order for electrostatic charge to take place would require dry material.
After making many of these, i would like to suggest some tips: - Make your pattern piece with a piece of mylar or glossy cardstock or something similar that is firm and not easy to accidentally slice the edge off of or crush. - After dusting and vacuuming, I close the window in my room, and turn on the air purifier. Then I place a freshly cleaned sheet (protected from dust and dander, and place it over my bed. I place another on the floor as well, to prevent kicking up dust. I have my hair back, my mask on, and i wear fresh clothes that were handled with sanitized hands. I know it seems like overkill, but my customers have allergies, and they deserve to be protected. Sanitize the pens and the scissors, and any other things you'll need, like ziplocs and maybe post- it notes or other labels. - After stripping the cardboard edges, metal, and any glue off, cut the filter into strips that go across the short side of the filter fabric, making them as wide as the piece where it measures from nose to chin. Then accordian fold it and place the pattern piece over the top and grip all of it in your hand so that it's all smooth and taught, and then cut out several pieces at once. This saves the time of tracing out each piece and then getting ink on your fingers, which will happen. If you really need to trace it out, use a ball point or a gel pen, but do not use Sharpie - it creates fumes. - As you go, pack them in ziplock bags, to keep them from getting contaminated by particles that could inadvertently enter the room. Try to keep track of how many you are putting in the bags, so that you don't have to handle them a lot more to count them out. - If you didn't mark the face side, and can't tell which side is which, hold the fabric under light. One side has glossy fibers, whereas the side that goes up to your face has a flatter, less shiny look. The other side with the glossy fibers is also the side that tends to fray and fuzz up. So try to handle the filter material as little as possible, to keep all that fraying from happening. Too much wear may affect the quality of the filter. - Once they are all cut, mark them - i put he word "Nose" or "Inside" at the top of the mask where it would meet your nose. A dot is fine, but sometimes a dot is hard to see, and people may forget what the dot actually means. (Sounds dumb, but trust me - be specific). Again, use ball point, NOT Sharpie.

Finally, common sense! I thought ,after days of research myself, elastic is needed all around the mask or tape to face so I am glad you are going thru these steps. I think many are doing the masks incorrectly.
Yes - the loose style is fine for the general public - my mask protects you, your mask protects me, but for healthcare workers in close contact, they need a tight seal.
I came across a great tip by an RN under another video, she said she used "body adhesive" around the edges of her mask, like you use for wigs, to hold up compression stockings etc... . It's odorless, hypoallergenic and washes off at the end of the shift. She mentioned the name "IT STAYS". It's made by Jobst (the stocking co) and others. It seems no matter who the manufacturer is (there are several) it is called "IT STAYS". I was reading it lasts 8-10 hrs or longer. www.amazon.com/JOBST-Stays-Roll-Body-Fixative/dp/B0015DA0E2
@@MyPocketPediatrician You are correct healthcare workers need a well-fitted mask without a doubt. As an RN I also believe EVERYONE need the most effective mask/respirator as the infection starts in the communities then proceeds to the inpatient arena, with the admission of each infected person. The community wearing the proper masks that provide optimum protection should have been among the first recommendations given. How could we have left that out when community spread became evident and a large part of the population is nonsymptomatic but infectious. The impact on health care workers and the health care system would have been a different story.
@@mareewalsh5539 OF course this is right. In the United State this is backwards. I am really pissed at the level of stupid information. It's as if they want the population reduced. Not too long ago, they were saying NO face masks. Now what they are saying is a Joke. Although there was much evidence in Asia, that this can be airborne. Now they recommend the public to wear ineffective home-made masks. If the general public wore N95 masks and used proper hygiene, then the number of cases would be much lower, and the stress on the health care workers much less. Now what they are doing is giving the health care works a steady stream of COVID cases because the general public is really not adequately protected. There think there are, but they are not.

Thank you. Great mask design. FYI, I tried dismantling the 3M filter the same way you did. However, after suffering several skin punctures, I decided to use serrated heavy-duty scissors to cut just inside the cardboard frame. This sacrifices about an inch of the filter material on each side but allows you to easily pull the wire from the filter and eliminates having to remove the glue (which can possibly damage the material anyway). This method is much faster, safer and easier. Hope this might help. Thank you again.
Me too , but my metal snips ( post sterilization ) made really quick work of it. Glad I got the "contractor" pack of filters the last time I went to Lowe's.

Great video and thanks for posting it. I also thought of using 3M furnace air filter material as an insert. I agree with everything you said. Except one that I don't think filter material itself has any specific air flow direction. The reason furnace filter has air flow direction shown is for their cardboard frame structure. For example, the furnace filter has thin wires on the air exhaust side to keep the filters in place. Without this wire mesh, strong air flow will deform the filters or even flow it out completely. So I think it doesn't really matter which side of filter you use in your mask. Thanks
Thank-you, Doctor Lili. After watching tons of UA-cam mask-making videos and considerable experimentation over three days, my sister and I decided upon a different design (by a nurse) last night. Totally agree, thank you for the project in the first place and continuing with the process. I'm in Sacramento California and we are not hit hard, hope we never get hit hard, but I would like to try to make some for healthcare workers. I am beyond angry 😡 at how many have insufficient ppe, and are literally dying because of it. Even Walmart employees are dying. And now they are being sued, because they hadn't provided or insisted on any ppe for their employees. Two days ago I offered to make some surgical style masks from fabric for the employees of my neighborhood Walmart and the employee I asked said yes she would wear it!! But the manager said they can't accept any personal donations so no thank you. And besides it has not yet become mandatory. Can you believe that way of thinking???? Such ignorance. And so I saw yesterday where Walmart is going to provide masks and gloves to all their employees. Sure after your employees died, two in one store within a week of each other. Fools.
@@MyPocketPediatrician I just don't understand that kind of carelessness with people's lives. I don't get it, how they can even think for a minute that thinking like that is a good thing or will have positive consequences. To save the cost of gloves and masks???????

Dr Lili - Here is another brilliant idea i'd like to pass along to you, put together by a surgeon at Boston Childrens Hosp using a Elastomeric Respirator. Please pass this on to your medical/nursing friends! She says the anesthesia mask and the Inline Anesthesia Viral/Bacterial filter attachment are only about $1 each. Very impressive! The comments from doctors and engineers are very laudatory and they wonder why no one else has thought about it before. One says "This video is the benchmark for DIY respirator design!" And please note the comments about the elastic straps in the comments section. One suggests - rather than using the green elastic straps the doctor in this video is reusing, which are difficult to clean - they are using tourniquets from their lab since "They are cheap, purchased in bulk, sturdy, and can be sanitized ". She also says "The masks come in 7 sizes, we are using size 6, 5, & 4 for most of our staff needs." Another commenter suggested using these cleanable neoprene adjustable headgear harness systems instead of the green elastic straps. you are a relief when so many of us are just writhing in gnawing anxiety. I will spend the next few days working on these for friends in need and friends with family members with the virus. Thank you SO MUCH for your painstaking, diligent, and comprehensive research. No Phd, indeed! With great gratitude, tina
My husband suggested you use tin snips to cut around the perimeter of the cardboard so you easily eliminate the cardboard and glue and also the wire will just pop off.
The only comment I have is that when you are pulling the filter material out of the pocket of your washable mask, you are scattering particles all over the place. The only safe way I can think of doing this is in a negative pressure fume hood, then put the washable mask in a bag while it's still in the hood. Otherwise this is good stuff. I see you've improved this even more, so I'll watch that video before I start ripping up my 3M filters. Thanks for working on this, and thanks for your time and effort to get through medical school and after just so you can expose yourself to all these wonderful killer micro particles. You and your colleagues are appreciated for keeping us alive and trying to educate us a little..
I would have used a cleaned table to work on because however clean we think our floors are, they are still just floors that we walk on with the same shoes that we walk outside with. Great video about the filters and mask. Thanks you for your helpful video.
She didn't say you had to use the floor. This was a demo, and perhaps her floor offered the best view for video-taping. Health care workers are very aware of what can get tracked into the house. I always go nuts (before this happened) to see doting grandmothers and ignorant young mothers letting their kids crawl all the floor in stores, post offices, etc. One little girl in short-shorts was doing splits on the nasty tile, and I finally reminded Grandma that our rural county had a lot of chicken yards and cattle pens. Eyewwww.
I would have preferred that as well, but my table is downstairs with the dog and 6 other people who live with me (most of whom are 7 and under), so it's a fairly impractical place for me to set up for 30+ hours to do a tutorial. We don't wear shoes in the house, and the dog doesn't go upstairs, so it seemed like a better option after I scrubbed it.
This has been THE most informative mask video I have seen! There are so many misleading videos out there. Also, people, don’t buy those “surgical” masks currently sold on Amazon under the “fashion mask” category. My elder brother just bought a case of them thinking they are the real thing. They are not medical supplies, and will do nothing to protect you. I also cannot stress the importance of not restricting oxygen. Thanks for this informative video. I want to just give you some information about the directionality of how you insert/use the filter. It doesn't actually matter which direction the air flows through the filter material for this purpose. It only matters if you are using the filter in an HVAC system. That metal cage is designed to protect the filter from a large volume of air coming through the furnace/AC, so it has to be inserted in the correct direction so that the filter itself doesn't get destroyed. But once you've removed the filter from the package, to use in a facemask, the filter can be used from any side. This information comes from my husband who is an Air Force trained HVAC technician.
Thank you Dr. We have the cotton home made masks but need the 3M Filter inside! I believe the fiberglass is in the hepa vacuum bags, not the AC filter.

Have you washed a mask with that in it yet? I had heard some others had done that too, but haven't heard how they are holding up for laundering. What do you think?
Well done. Claymore mines "TOWARDS ENEMY" is the way I've been labeling my filters. In this case, the virus is the enemy and not the patient. It's the Marine in me. I couldn't help it. Anyhow, shiny side TOWARDS ENEMY. Fuzzy side towards you.

Hi thank you & well done. I've also made a similar version. It's a DIY no-sew mask with a 100% cotton Levi kerchief using the 3M Filtrete MPR 1500 (MERV 12) filter as insert. I also checked the MSDS and found no known hazards and I also got the same feedback from 3M--they won't say it's a good solution. We have a vulnerable family member and this a good mask using available materials. I plan to use paper bags to store masks while in use during the day and plastic bags for new filters. I also plan to use a light application of non hazardous non aerosol starch when ironing the laundered kerchiefs (not the filters)--it's to add body to the cotton mask when I refold them to help hold their shape. Thanks again and I'm more confident after seeing your detailed method.
Help: I took apart the air filter before making note of the direction of flow. Is there anyway to distinguish/identify this now that the cardboard frame is gone? 😢😳 Excellent video
Doc, I found it easier to snip the wire mesh first along the edges of the filter and then peel the wire mesh off carefully. Then cut the filter material out from the boxy frame at the edges with blade knife and scissors. this way you do least damage to filter and avoid the step of breaking down the sides of the box frame. Alternately, you can get the un damaged filter material from hepa filter vacuum cleaner bags. Once you are done with your mask, use double sided skin tape to secure to face.

This is an extremely helpful video. I was a little thrown by you saying you put a sealed zip lock bag mask over your mouth and nose, but am grateful for your transparency. Thank you!

Since the seal is very important, what do you think about using the mouthpiece from a snorkel? Rubber band a circle of this material on the stub left after removing the long tube (keep just the mouthpiece and it's stub, ensure the direction of the material is right.). Then, breath in through the mouth only and exhale through the nose or mouth or both. Goggles help too.
Thank you for posting this, I bought the 1900 filter but This showed the masks I planned to make would not work as well as I hoped. I need to make the filter removable and make sure I have the right side facing the face. I was starting to make masks for family but I see I need to start from scratch now. THANK YOU!!
@@MyPocketPediatrician Is there any way to tell the difference between the two sides of the filtrete filter once you've already taken off all of the boxing and wiring? I noticed one side is more shiny, and one side has more of a felt-type texture. Do you know which side should be facing the individual wearing the mask? Much thanks!

I have actually updated a lot. This is the link to my newest, best mask and I am now using filti instead of the 3M products. ua-cam.com/video/2J3Fq4o-U4I/v-deo.html
Washable filter material that is comparable to N95 masks is available from a US company in KS. Filti. com is the name. Use a nose bridge wire. Seal seams with hot glue, silicone sealant or fabric glue. You could even apply a silicone bead around the perimeter to better seal mask against face.
My Pocket Pediatrician I have not tested hot glue or silicone sealant for washing machine durability. I use Aleene's fabric glue. Here is my wash routine: after each outdoor use, I disinfect both sides of mask with isopropyl alcohol spray (at least 60% by volume), hand wash warm-hot, and dry in sunshine. Any advice is welcomed.
My Pocket Pediatrician I subbed and look forward to others' input. Since CDC recommendation for the public to use masks when outdoors, we all need help with this. TY for your help!
Do I need to check, (and where would I check?)to see if these filters have any harmful substances like fiber glass particles? I went to the store and I got one that was for bacteria and viruses 3M Filtrete . I'm concerned that it may have something harmful, since it is not meant to be so close to your face. Thank you so much for the information. Is it an extremely helpful video.
I can't tell you medically anything but I can tell you what I've found. It's not fiiberglsss. I reviewed the materials safety data sheet and it is just a bunch of polymers. It said no concern for contact with skin or eyes or inhalation. As one HVAC specialist I talked to said "why would we put something in an air filter that's bad to be breathed in? That would defeat the purpose.". That said, some people are making a duck bill mask out of hepa bags. I watched the tutorial and there is a cut edge of fuzzy material right up against the face, which may not be smart. In making these and wearing them in the last few weeks, it seems like any particular matter would stay in the cotton. They hold up pretty well. I reused the filters for a while trying to see how well they hold up, and they get kind of fuzzy/fluffy after a while (I was home, not in an exposed area). It should only be single use, but from what I've been told (and can't make any guarantee) there isn't a toxicity concern. I've asked every person who suggested fiberglass to give me a source, and it's been "a nurse said there might be". I'll post the like to the MSDS for you. I just can't do it from my phone for some reason, but it is in the comments on the mask making tutorial.
@@artalli7170 See Eve Wilie's comment above, she found (as did Dr. Lili) that the 3M Filtrete filters are made from a non toxic polypropylene and polyolefin plastic - there is no "glass" or fiberglass involved. Some filters use fiberglass. These do not.

@@SunnyArkfam1 Heavy sarcasm, I'm sure. There are a lot of people commenting on the hazards of using material that might cause health problems in the years to come from a homemade mask that you use to avoid being terminated by a virus in a few weeks. Cotton is safe to use, but you won't see or smell the virus that easily passes through it.
@@SunnyArkfam1 I would lean toward markers manufactured for children or crayons. Markers that contain solvents where people use them to get high might present an avoidable risk.
I settled on the 3M Elite filter and after research confirmed its function for this application. I deduced that the N95 blocks 95% of particles down to 3 microns in size and the Filtrite Elite with MPR 2200 meets the same specification. I read that a MERV 13+ or MPR 1500+ is a high level HEPA filter. Vaccum bags, HVAC filters for home and car, meet this spec. But, I'm more comfortable with the 3M and other brands that actually state virus capture and high MERV. Make sure have the airflow correct and achieve a tight seal. Pipe cleaners all around or foam all around or elastic all around. Bendable nose piece is critical.. I used short elastic loops with velcro straps around the back of the head. The velcro allows for specific tightning while elastic give flex to fit side of the face.
I literally just walked out of Kroger with a Filtrete filter I cannot believe it because I cannot find HEPA vacuum cleaner bags. By the way I was so happy to see the filter that catches viruses that I picked up the first one I saw then I realized let me get the largest one that they have since they were all the same price. I'm glad I watched this video because I didn't realize or think about inhaling through a cotton mask that you would inhale the air with the least resistance thanks for this video I appreciate it as a common citizen you're doing a great job thanks
@@CalvinHill-reflects Where is your data for this? Even though lots of people were saying the furnace filters have fiber glass, she checked the primary source and found they DO NOT contain fiber glass. Old fashioned cheap furnace filters with almost non-existent filtering were made decades ago and are still available. I suspect that people may be conflating new high tech filters with the old. But, I would like to see a definitive source.
great video. I already planned to make a mask with a/c filter before I saw your video, but I didn't know the air flow is directional. That may save me some trouble. FYI: I lost the place where I found the size of corona virus but here it is. N95 mask is 0.3 microns; which is the same as 300 nano meters. viruses vary in size from 15-300 nanometers. Most are in the range of 15-80 nanometers. and there is one virus that is almost as big as a bacteria. The original estimated size of corona virus is 60-150 nanometers. that makes the holes of an N95 mask 2-4 times bigger than the virus. It might have been the product info on 3M website that says filters are not made like a net because its not currently possible to make a net that small. The particles are actually captured through a process they call diffusion. The air flow around the fibers causes small particles to change direction and crash into a fiber where they become entangled. I didn't completely understand the explanation of how that works, but I guess the filters can catch particles that are smaller than the holes in the filter

After watching your last video I realized that I didn't know which way the airflow went. So I compared a new one to the one I've dissected. The front "airflow" side is smoother and has grains (lines) that go perpendicular to the folds. The back side, you can see the fibers more. Thanks for the ziploc advice! I will be sealing all my filters now.
I was talking to someone about the old N95 I found that I used in the video and said I wonder if I should use it my next shift at work. She said if I did and it wasn't in a bag it would be pretty much useless now, so I added in the Ziploc bag idea.o

Thank you so much for the information. I was doing some research before making masks for my family. You have the best information I have found thus far. I do have a question. My niece has a 10 month old baby and we don’t want to put a mask on her because of the fear of suffocation. What is the best way to protect her when having to transport her outside when necessary. The baby will have an upcoming doctor’s appointment and she needs to be protected. I thought of possibly utilizing the filter with the car seat cover. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them. Thank you.
Silver Girl for those that are able to do that’s definitely the best plan! As someone who’s very high risk I very appreciate all of those who are doing just that. 👍🏻👍🏻
Silver Girl not everyone have months of food and other essentials stored so yes you have to go out into the world. Also if you need prescriptions filled. And don’t forget the gloves because even using a credit card for purchases, you still have to press those buttons on the little machine.
Silver Girl yes that is a much better plan than attaching material to your face that was never designed to be something a person should breath through.
Great Job, you have covered all the important information correctly Doc. Most other people who make masks fails to notice filter direction, filter classes, effectiveness and so on.

Hi Dr. Lili, Thank you so much for your time, your can-do spirit, your focus and generosity. God bless you, your family and your Mom and may He watch over and keep you all healthy. I have one question which I have not answered through your videos. Why 2 sheets of the 3M Filtrete filter? Is it because the accordion style expands in the pocket and 2 sheets is an overlap? Many thanks, John
You must remember the air filter is designed to pull air in one direction. In this case toward you. It will be hard to breath out over time. That can be another reason why it is a build up of moisture in your mask. In which over time can cause you to be light headed.
@cc • 1 day ago ... yup, totally agree. And anyone with cardiovascular issues, they say wearing a tight fittingmask for too long is a health risk. It is recommended that a breath of fresh air is taken at least every 20 minutes to prevent fainting, dizziness, or lightheaded and or exhaustion.
The arrow is the indicator for how to install in the furnace. It is there because the metal mesh is only on one side to prevent the filter material from being sucked into the furnace blower motor. The orientation of the filter doesn’t matter for filtration when used in a mask.
I don't think so. Mine had mesh on both sides. One side is shiny and one is dull. On the higher level filters that do viral particles there is an electrostatic forces to catch microparticles so the direction is important
I don't think so. Mine had metal mesh on both sides. The higher level filters are impregnated with something to create an electrostatic charge to catch microparticles. The shinier side faces towards the patient and the dull side faces towards the healthcare worker.

Dr.Lili thanks for useful video. I follow you in every steps but forgot to mark the direction of air. Is there any way to findout which side should be toward the face?
Take a look at your filter the side that goes towards your face for lack of better terms has a fibrous look to it. The side that face out to the air is very smooth. Look real hard and you will see it. I had to analyze my home filter in my unit to help me because I did the same thing and didn't mark it.
@@MyPocketPediatrician No, I'm not aware of the first one. I have been watching a lot of mask videos lately and many of them have background music which is annoying, especially if you need to re-listen to parts of the video. It just goes on and on. Hence, my thanking you.
Thank you not only for sharing this incredibly resourceful video, but also for being a Frontline hero in this horrible pandemic. God bless you and stay safe.
I am in no way an expert but Ive been using these filters for years on my fans as an air purifier of sorts and knowing that they are used in air conditioners knowing air conditioners tend to be very moist these filters arent just a one hour or one day use they work over an extended amount of time I would think they could be sanitized I am actually going to be steaming one to check and see if it harms the material soon as my filter gets here. Thank you for your great tutorial out of all the masks Ive seen being made out there I have the highest hopes for this one.
I'm not sure. Some people are saying they won't last at all in the mask - some are saying longer. Unless you have a lab where you can measure viral particles, I'm not sure you'd be able to tell if they are still effective. I'd be very careful about reusing.
Thanks again for your dedication & hard work. For folks who are not health care workers, but just need something to walk down the street in, do we have to replace the filters everyday? Thanks.
My Pocket Pediatrician thank you I was able to go over the video several times and I got it but will be sending the request for the pattern still. Your wonderful thank you so much for taking the time to put all this together 🙏🏻
Thanks Dr Lili! I didn't mark the sides of the Filtrete material when I took the filter apart 2 weeks ago. Since I have a 3d printer and no good sewing machine I was using the 1900 Filtrete with a single layer of a cotton t-shirt on the "health-care worker" side. I wanted to protect myself from inhaling loose filter strands. On closer examination of the Filtrete I can see the fibers are flat and tight on one side and looser on the other. I use my filter with a face shield. My wife finds the plastic masks uncomfortable and poorly fitting so we are going to try to make a cloth mask for her.
I did wear it with my glasses one day. They kind of got bumped around a bit. I'm working on a contoured mask that is a little more challenging to make, but will have a nicer fit and comfort level. I hope to have that tutorial done soon. Please subscribe so you get updated!
@@MyPocketPediatrician Hi there, thank you very much for your reply, concerns too. I'll admit for a good face mask for coronavirus, yes some masks I've seen do need some basic sewing skills, sewing machine as well to be ok. I'm wondering if for the general public use, supermarket etc if advisable to wear disposable face mask with filter, or ok to wear reusable face mask- as in wash the face mask, replace the filter too, or is it better to wear a disposable face mask, as the virus is deadly unfortunately. Thank you very much for your reply, concerns too. Very much appreciated :-) please take good care yourself as well :-)
This is the best video I have seen. Thank you! Can I put my cotton masks in the dishwasher by themselves to sanitize them? Or do they definitely need to be washed in hot water. Of course without the filters. Also are coffee filters any good to use as a filter?

Please check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/2J3Fq4o-U4I/v-deo.html I think you can wash them in the dishwasher (the cotton part), but you can't wash the filter material. Coffee filters only really filter coffee grounds. They definitely won't filter viral particles.
Fiberglass filters are not the same as pleated air filters. The fiberglass ones are usually less expensive ones that look kind of like stretched cotton NOT the pleated filter like she is using.
My Pocket Pediatrician I had a similar question the first time I heard about using air filters as face masks so I looked into it and did some research into it probably more than I needed too (but I just finished a MA program and missed studying a subject HA).
My Pocket Pediatrician I tried to contact 3M about the use of the filter so close to the face, but could not get through to customer service. There is much info floating around that furnace filters should not be close to face and breathed in, due to fiber and chemical content. What did your research show?
I did get a merv 13 filter and cut it up but didnt know about the arrow. How do i know which side is which now? Will it protect if reversed? Thank you, great video and info

I have encountered people wearing their masks obviously incorrectly. One man was wearing his on his head like a hat! I think it is their passive aggressive way of not following the rules when the sign at the store says you can't come in without a mask.
I've found as a lay person that strips of Press'N Seal (bumpy, sticky side towards cloth and skin) enhance the seal of several types of face masks. Andrea Senkowski
Hi KC. I have only used it, part on the mask and part on the skin as if I had just taken scotch tape and taped the mask to my face. It could probably by folded inside the mask to act as double sided tape, but the seal is less visible. Good luck.
Thought of using these filters after seeing a vacuum bag tutorial that might have fiberglass? You made a great video, thanks for sharing it with us. Might I add that when cutting up said filter, to not do it on a floor (dirt, germs, etc) but maybe on a clean table, or even put a very clean bedsheet on floor first, if the floor is necessary. Even putting a clean sheet (ie: washing sheet with Clorox or equal) on top of a bed and using that as a work surface. God bless you and thanks for all you do!!
Please see the video above at 19:10 Re fiberglass. I also have the MSDS safety sheet pinned at the top of the comments. Also, I am distancing in a home with 7 people and a dog, so as I said in the video, I cleaned the floor with lysol cleanning spray and wipes and did this in the bedroom where we never wear shoes away from the kids and dog since my tables are all occupied with all the other people in my home. When I'm preparing them outside of the tutorial, I'm not using the floor, but needed a spot for demonstration purposes. I figured the floor that had just been scrubbed was better than a bed with a sheet on it. Anyway - I didn't even use any of the ones I made for the tutorial because I didn't put them into the ziploc bags immediately, so those are just for demonstration purposes. I'm in contact with another company about a possibly better material, so I hope to have a tutorial available soon. Try a thick non woven disposable bed sheet or iron interfacing onto your cotton mask to repel moisture from the filter. I know some people will put a panty liner by their mouths to absorb, i dont know how well that is for breathing, but a small square of a microfiber towel could also do the trick
I love your problem solving! What are your feeling on the polypropylene fibers that become dislodged/ fuzzy from metal removal (I was super careful when removing it as I am art conservator) I also was concerned about the fibers bring dislodged along the cut edges. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful feedback My deep regards for your work
I don't believe polyprene is toxic, although obviously, you don't want to breathe in any type of fibers. I don't think they will pass through the cotton material. That said, Filti is a material that was designed for this purpose, and I'm currently editing a tutorial on it (and I have a discount code for all my viewers!)

3M Filteret are made of electro-staticlly charged polypropylene and is similar material to N95 masks. To get something equivelent to N95, I would suggest using an other and inner fabric with 3 layers of 3M MPR 2500 or 2800 filter. These higher rated filter would do a better job filtering particles as small as 0.3 um. FYI if someone sneezes where aerosoles are generated these home made fitlers and popular N95 will not filter COVID-19 particles as small as 0.1 um! You will need full recpirator mask with face shield.
Thank you for your comment. Fully agree on the electrostatic charges. What made you say 3 layers of 2500 or 2800? I've had people question my saying 2 layers because they said it would be too hard to breathe through 2 layers of cotton and 2 layers of filter. I just wondered the rationale for the 3 layers. I was able to pass a FIT test with the 2 layers in the mask I designed.
@@MyPocketPediatrician 3M MPR 1900 Filteret has rating of 62% capture for 0.3-1 um, 2 layers ~(1-0.38^2)*100=85% capture, 3 layer ~(1-0.38^3)*100=94.5%. 3M MPR 2800 Filteret has rating of 81% capture for 0.3-1 um, 2 layers ~(1-0.19^2)*100=96% capture, 3 layer ~(1-0.19^3)*100=99%. You can probbaly get any with 2 layers of MPR 2800 but in case of MPR 1900 you will need 3 layers.

Norm Lieverdink You’re right!!! ,This is the point, There is NO electrostatic charge ...

After making many of these, i would like to suggest some tips:
- Make your pattern piece with a piece of mylar or glossy cardstock or something similar that is firm and not easy to accidentally slice the edge off of or crush.
When a person shows what they do to help others like yourself. it's good information. No idea is a bad idea. Stay safe people need you... many blessings....
Very true and kind of you to say that to her
Be blessed in The Lord Jesus Christ

I liked her right off the start. Thank you! Like 1 person commented that you have given us more information on how to stay safe than the government. You’ve taken time to educate/teach us. You are the REAL DEAL!
My Pocket Pediatrician thank you!

ChuckRich I did the same thing!
Me too , but my metal snips ( post sterilization ) made really quick work of it. Glad I got the "contractor" pack of filters the last time I went to Lowe's.

My Pocket Pediatrician I am using the 1900 filtrete and cut packaging away. I can’t tell which way is up,ie which side towards face.
Thanks
luxman999 I agree!
Thank-you, Doctor Lili.
After watching tons of UA-cam mask-making videos and considerable experimentation over three days, my sister and I decided upon a different design (by a nurse) last night. We only found your videos this morning.

Fools.
@@justseekingtruth3998 that's heartbreaking.

One suggests - rather than using the green elastic straps the doctor in this video is reusing, which are difficult to clean - they are using tourniquets from their lab since "They are cheap, purchased in bulk, sturdy, and can be sanitized
". She also says "The masks come in 7 sizes, we are using size 6, 5, & 4 for most of our staff needs." Another commenter suggested using these cleanable neoprene adjustable headgear harness systems instead of the green elastic straps. They are only $14 : www.buyemp.com/product/o-two-replacement-neoprene-head-harness-system

@@OMGaNEWBIE hey newb, you got it all wrong. That doc is right (partially) and if you didnt cone up with the idea to look into hepa all on your own, his advise is sound, you are most probably only damaging your lungs... But you did not watch THIS video before telling people its bad info.
@@nameless-og --- What's your point? Filters are meant for furnaces, vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, etc., NOT for direct breathing masks. My warning still applies. Call the 3M company for yourself.
@@OMGaNEWBIE her video addresses that. No company anywhere is going take a call from someone asking if they could use their product as PPE, and say "well of course you can!" You're going to have to do some research of your own. Hell, the material i use outperforms all of these options and is not even produced as a filter of any kind, its a sterile wrap. Its not going to come in a box that says "safe for human lungs" and "protects covid 19" on the side... You're just going to have to figure it out.
@@nameless-og - You seriously are not worth responding to. The only reason I am this last time, is to make sure other innocent people make the effort to call 3M directly for themselves. No credible manufacturer is going to go against legal manufacturing codes to promote their product for uses other than what they were approved for. The law suits would be horrendous.

I've watched a ton of these videos in the last 24hrs planning to make my own mask to use when i go grocery shopping. Nothing this elaborate, but as a retired critical care/ ER RN i salute you for coming up with the best design i've seen yet to make masks for health care workers. I just ordered some 3M Filtrete vacuum cleaner bags yesterday to make a mask i can wear to the grocery store - nothing this perfect but hopefully better than a those simple masks made of a piece of folded fabric and held in place by hair bands.

The 2800 is the best
Washable filter material that is comparable to N95 masks is available from a US company in KS. Filti. com is the name. Use a nose bridge wire. Seal seams with hot glue, silicone sealant or fabric glue. You could even apply a silicone bead around the perimeter to better seal mask against face.
Will the hot glue hold up in the laundry?
My Pocket Pediatrician I have not tested hot glue or silicone sealant for washing machine durability. I use Aleene's fabric glue. Here is my wash routine: after each outdoor use, I disinfect both sides of mask with isopropyl alcohol spray (at least 60% by volume), hand wash warm-hot, and dry in sunshine. Any advice is welcomed.

Same. I'm paused now because I cut them all out and I saw a video saying they made with glass particles and can cause lung issues.
@@MyPocketPediatrician Excellent. Thank you. I'll use them, with a warning. Bless you for everything you're doing!
no fiber glass in the accordion style filters.

Don't forget to read the MSDS of a marker being used for labeling. Some might want to avoid unnecessary solvent exposure.
Is there a suggested safer type of marker?
What level did you get?
@@MyPocketPediatrician 1500 20x30x1
Most vacuum hepa bags are made out of fiber glass, please double check before putting on face.
The vacuum filter bags may have fiberglass, as she said in the video, she researched the 3m filter to not have fiberglass
great video.
Glad to help!

Thank you.
I think I’ll just stay home.

Excellent plan!
Silver Girl yes that is a much better plan than attaching material to your face that was never designed to be something a person should breath through.

I did that on the top only. Maybe I can put it all the way around?
My Pocket Pediatrician I don’t understand how that doesn’t make the mask roll. I just can’t picture it up close and on.
Hi Dr. Lili,
Thank you so much for your time, your can-do spirit, your focus and generosity. God bless you, your family and your Mom and may He watch over and keep you all healthy. I have one question which I have not answered through your videos. Why 2 sheets of the 3M Filtrete filter? Is it because the accordion style expands in the pocket and 2 sheets is an overlap? Many thanks, John
That's the theory. Someone smart (not me) speculated that 2 would work better than one to better simulate the N95.

Hi there, thank you very much for your reply, concerns too.
I have a new and improved Adjustable mask with FILTI material that passed the FIT test!
Thanks!

I have encountered people wearing their masks obviously incorrectly. One man was wearing his on his head like a hat! I think it is their passive aggressive way of not following the rules when the sign at the store says you can't come in without a mask.
I've found as a lay person that strips of Press'N Seal (bumpy, sticky side towards cloth and skin) enhance the seal of several types of face masks. Andrea Senkowski
I am trying to picture this. Is part of the PnS on the mask and part on the face or does it act like double sided tape?
Hi KC. I have only used it, part on the mask and part on the skin as if I had just taken scotch tape and taped the mask to my face. It could probably by folded inside the mask to act as double sided tape, but the seal is less visible. Good luck.
Thanks! This is an awesome idea.
I should be receiving the product on Tuesday, so please subscribe to my channel so you get alerted if something better comes up!

I don't believe polyprene is toxic, although obviously, you don't want to breathe in any type of fibers. I don't think they will pass through the cotton material.

3M MPR 1900 Filteret has rating of 62% capture for 0.3-1 um, 2 layers ~(1-0.38^2)*100=85% capture, 3 layer ~(1-0.38^3)*100=94.5%.
3M MPR 2800 Filteret has rating of 81% capture for 0.3-1 um, 2 layers ~(1-0.19^2)*100=96% capture, 3 layer ~(1-0.19^3)*100=99%.
