I have just finished Rousseau´s Confessions。 He was such a skillful writer could make enormously powerful expressions with words. My conclusion is that when crazy ideas are expressed with powerful words they can bewitch generations of people.

Great lecture as always ! If there are people who didn't listen the introduction to philosophy course by Daniel Bonevac, you must check it out ! Thanks professor for this great introduction. I think you should include further readings too. Take care.

I have lots of videos on Plato, including several on the theory of forms. This is an introduction to the Republic:

Hi professor, I’m still confused on how the will of the state and the individual are in perfect alignment. Are you saying in a viel of ignorance perspective even if an individual has a different will than the state in a certain circumstance the general rule is where the wills are in agreement? Am I off?

Good question! I don’t like Rousseau’s answer at all. He says that in joining the social contract I will to promote the general will, and thus will the defeat of my own will if the two conflict. So, if the State forces me to do something against my will, it’s something I willed it to do.

@@PhiloofAlexandria Wow I can see how that answer is unsatisfying.

@@daniblablah9329 I think since the laws in a state are expressions of general will. Laws are just. The source of general will are people themselves, it is for the common good. Hence people show obedience to the state. In obeying these laws of state and obeying the general men don't loose liberty because individuals are source of these laws (general will determines these laws). There is no conflict between state and liberty because people give their consent in making a state and hence there can't be any conflict between the two.

Absolutely terrifying how people built society with ideas like these.

I became a professor so that I could give people access to ideas that weren't readily available to people who grew up in neighborhoods like the one I lived in as a child. I want knowledge to be available to everyone.

And I wish to encourage more professors and thinkers to do this kind of thing. Imagine if people had done this in the past-if you could watch Einstein explain the theory of general relativity, or Wittgenstein explain the Tractatus without being threatened by a fireplace poker! :)
