This initially reminds me of Braids Cabal Minion rather than It That Betrays. This also helps explains why Black is the most powerful color in Commander.
I have found a way to get half of opponents deck onto my battlefield. Here's how: Peer into the abyss + tergrid, god of fright + "wait until opponents turn is over and has to discard to 7 cards". And BAM
I'd love to build this with thoughtseize type effects, obviously throwing their whole hand away is superior, but I love the politics and asymetric information it'll create on the board as I steal key pieces from my opponents and know every players hand.
If your opponent sacrifices wayfarers bauble... then you get it! Brilliant, simply brilliant! Also, simply adding anything with annihilator into this deck is insane. The one thing that wasnt mentioned though and I feel should be, is that in the 99, with the amount of tutors in black, you could add blue and there are quite a few Mill commanders in black/blue. Dimir in general becomes insane with this card!
This is the deck that I'm going to play completely unapologetically and love it. This is the commander you play when you know you're a jerk and don't care anymore lol
I used to run Death Cloud in my Liliana, Heretical Healer deck as one of the only ways to get her to ultimate. If nobody has lands/creatures/a hand it's basically the one way to get her there. So happy to be able to run it again! :D
Tegrid's infinite potential definitely seems powerful, but it should be noted that you also need to produce black mana in at least a 1:3 ratio to colored mana. There are a few loops that give infinite black mana, like Priest of Gix with Ashnods and Nim Deathmantle, but by and large mono-black doesn't have the easiest time getting colored mana infinites, at least compared to blue and green. Even mono-red has a two-card colored infinte mana combo (albeit a pricey and fragile one) but Mono-B needs 3 parts for it's simplest combo.
In the credits at 8:50 . As of this posting, my lowest TCGPlayer market price is currently $2.93 for my Duel Decks: Venser vs Koth printing. I definitely need to be reprinted!
So I'm not sure if I'm just reading It That Betrays wrong or if there is something I'm missing, but it does seem like there is an important difference between it and Tegrid. Tegrid specifically mentions that the card be brought from the graveyard to the battlefield meaning that it would get stopped by graveyard hate where It that Betrays would not. I could be reading it wrong though and clarification would be great!
What do you think of Grave Pact in this deck? It would likely make them not want to attack you either. Because EVERY creature you then lose to the graveyard makes them sac another creature which then pops up on your side
also people are not talking about the other ability lol, in black you have cabal coffers and all those mana producing things. If you dont die with the stealing permanents, making them lose life will be other game plan. At the end of turn use the lantern, cabbal coffers 10+ lands, untap, does again, untap do it again. Brutal
Yes! This card is going to be so much fun as Commander or as just on of the 99. All the salt. Fun with smokestack, so you can get extra permanents to sac.
Ermahgerd... totally forgot how much I loved "it that betrays"! When I bought 45 packs of Kaldheim decks and got three Tegrids I figured I could finally use rankle and doom foretold in a deck she shot out as a deck base more than anything else I received in those packs.
mono black is my favorite color but i never found a commander i like. Kirrik i like it but there is one in my playgroup and i like go be unique in a way. Yawghtmoth also like him but he kinda plays the same as my marchesa the black rose. I think this Godess finally have a commander i might like. :)
Black, in recent years, has moved from: "Use your life as a resource to help you win the game" To "Use your opponent's deck as a resource to help you win the game"
it allways was. Plenty of the effects black allways had, was to resurrect creatures from any graveyard. All formats became progressively more powerfull, making that particular strategy more viable. I think this card in particular is a mistake, way too weak for constructed, and stupid broken for commander, but overall the aviability of strong and solid cards on everyone's decks made the "alternative" wincon more reliable, instead of an anecdote.
Font of Mythos is a great addition to this deck. had it out by turn 3 and by turn 4 my opponents were discarding just because they were drawing so much. Then you can just throw bag of holding in your deck in case you have to discard but your curve is pretty low so you dont usually. It actually made them less mad at me because they were discarding those cards anyway haha
Our play group is doing a Kaldheim budget challenge. I chose Tergrid because I haven't built a black deck yet and I knew her ability seemed a little busted. We are supposed to be playing this weekend if everyone's cards show up and after seeing this video I am excited to see how she plays.
I play low-end commanders like Ghired, exiled conclave and Reyhan and I get bombed on.. So now I'm going to build this deck and really give them a reason to focus me.
Torment of Hailfire comes doubly to mind. The backside is like an x=1 cast of it, and the Torment could really feed that triggered ability on the front.
Tergrid + Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos + any creature + any [0]-cost sacrifice outlet = repeatable instant-speed board wipe that reanimates most of your opponents' creatures under your control. For best results, use Sadistic Hypnotist as your sacrifice outlet. 3BB for a 2/2 with "Sacrifice a creature: target player discards two cards. Activate this ability only when you could play a sorcery." Tergrid's only weaknesses as a commander are (1) surviving long enough to play her and (2) keeping her in play when the rest of the table declares you Archenemy on turn 0.
Someone should take this card and build a custom version (no changes to CMC, P/T or effects) where the name is changed to Tergrid, God of -Fright- Salt (yes, that includes the strikethrough text), replacing the lantern with a salt shaker, and having the flavor text be something related to salt. Then do something salt-related for the backside as well.
I'd like to try this in the 99 of a Savra deck. Giant Death Cloud followed by a Sylvan Reclamation to get all of your lands back while getting your opponents stuff? Seems fair and balanced.
If you have the mana for it, 'Peer into the Abyss' someone before you Dark Deal them. "Yes, I'd like to take away half your life, and half your library please, thank you."
Mitch, you should do a video about the day far off in the future when you are old and ancient and wizards prints a mono white commander card that simply says: "draw a card" on it. Wizards FINALLY fixes mono white after...you know, all of this.
When i saw this when it was first spoiled i had the same reaction. Think of thoughtseize effects as well, 1 mana steal a permanent card of your choice from target opponents hand. I was really into this cmdr, thinking i've wanted something spicy to excite me into deckbuilding, but i think this went a little too far overboard. I guess i'll just wait for rnd to get their act together and make a crazy powerful monowhite cmdr instead. (like that will ever happen but i can dream)
Ok, so I've perfected a deck to completely exile my opponents deck and now with this creature I can unlock a new achievement of taking full possession of my opponents deck, down to the last card.
I know this video is a bit old now but you should do a deck based around him I would do it myself but I don't have nearly enough card knowledge to have fun but it would be nice to see a budget deck for him. Or even something that's not as budget
i hate to increase your rage mitch but you don't even have to do anything to make tegrid good. you can just sit there. someone cracks a fetch land, you get it, sakura-tribe elder, you get it, somebody wheels, you get it all.
After stealing a few lands from opponents, itd be pretty easy to whip out a fairly early Possessed Portal. No one draws, each end - after forcing your opponents to ditch their spells - you'll just be gaining three permanent each time, netting 2 permanents until you decide to sac the portal
Ok... I'm pretty much screwed. My colorless Kozilek won't be able to reliably answer this, my disruption has a higher CMC than usual. Sooo... I guess now I have to invest in Cage and that new Cage?
Awesome video mitch. I liked Kaldheim alot And now I know tergrid is a build i.want. been thinking on her awhile. My friends play combo decks. Now I feel like I can just ruin them
my favorite thing about playing vs Tergrid is watching the opponent just squirm when I get to win, idk why but theres just such a salty personality behind Tergrid players on Arena.
@Jacob Smith It's crossing my mind, but I've grown to love Tinybones. I also run a bunch of tutors in my build so I feel confident in being able to get her when I want.
i pulled out my black binder and grabbed all my old unused discard and sacrifice cards, a few artifacts and protection spells, and im gonna have to buy a few pieces, but this will be a super cheap commander for me to build. plus my one deck with it that betrays always gets betrayed and has that card at the bottom of the library or somewhere else unpleasant and unusable
The sad part is, it slots perfectly into the commander slot of my existing mono-black already.......... Now I just have to find my It That Betrayed and slot it into the 99
Need at least 3 I would love to use this in my Meren sacrifice deck and then also make it a Commander deck and to round out the salt add it to a Grixis deck

Hello everyone! And thank you Mitch for all the videos!
I have found a way to get half of opponents deck onto my battlefield.

Partner with Kraum and have access to every wheel along with countermagic 🤮🤮
I want it to partner with white, so you can get martyr's bond. and force ppl to sac all their stuff.
This card encourages the ultimate evil that is Smokestack at a commander table
