Antoine Griezmann is a player that is impossible to place into a specific category. Griezmann is a beast, and he should honestly be unanimously in the top 5-10 best players in the talks, but he rarely gets that type of praise for Griezmann

Started noticing his previously undiscovered playmaking qualities during the World Cup. Was surprised at how deep he would drop and even put in a defensive shift when required. He was phenomenal.

It's basically a similiar role Thomas Müller played at Bayern, both midfielders did an array of duties which really didn't give them a specific pin-point position like CAM, or CM. In Griezmann's case, it's more remarkable because he used to be THE Target-man for Atletico, coming in from Real Sociedad, he was expected to fill in the big footprints left by Costa with Mandzukic. That role made him the face of Atletico, leading them to a ucl final and europa league title. This is, until his move to barcelona. Now at 33 years, he's no longer quick n speedy, or tall and strong for a targetman, so he has adopted an even complex role, which again, is carrying Atletico right now, his absence on the pitch can be seen as a disaster for Atletico as they continuosly drew or lost to mid-table or even low table teams when he was injured. Overall, its absolutely criminal in him not being talked about enough and him not regarded as one of the world's best. It was truly a mistake for him to shine during the era of the 2 goats.
Another phenomenal video. Antoine Grizmann is one of the best players of his generation and I'm glad he's starting to get that credit. One of the most complete offensive players I've seen.

I noticed his (Griezmann) little or no want to get into the box during attacks or counter attacks and I said to myself, "look at Atletico de Madrid...they are not ready to attack and score", but as it turned out, that was their game plan and it put Inter. Milan off tactically.
From the outside watching teams, one may think that they know the right thing to do, but you never know their (the team/club's) game plan really, until it works then we praise them 😅 or if it doesn't work, we criticize and say how we (observers from outside the club/team) were right and what we felt/knew should have been done/tweaked!

With a free man who can go left, right and center whenever necessary you can always have a numerical overload and passing triangles anywhere no matter the formation. Instead of specifically setting up to dominate the center or the wide spaces all game, you can leave it up to the judgement of the playmaker to dictate direction.
Thank you for the good video! I am not a Griezmann, nor Atletico fan, on the contrary, however, as someone that worked 4 years doing technical analysis of players, Griezmann was always a top10. I was simply amazed when I was looking at football with "trained eye".

similar to Thomas Muller who referes to himself as a "space investigator"; but Griezemann operates it deeper .He played this role brilliantly in the WC as well and only Argentina seemed to negate him.
Its a role i could see our boy Kane performing as he gets older .in a way he already does but in his mid 30s he could do this in deeper positions

not exactly like Muller. Muller is mostly a danger in the final third whre he makes constant runs all the time in every bit of space he finds and then has the lucidity to make the right pass or shot. Griezmann is more like a mix between a number 10 and a numer 9 who stays a lot of the time in midfield. They are slightly different
I'm training a team of U-15s, and I've got a couple of players that I'm goin to try this type of movements with.
Paqueta at West Ham also gets a similar role under Moyes, always at the side where the ball is to create numerical superiority
Very underrated player of this generation. I think him making that statement that he is on messi and Ronaldo level caused his form to dip and playing at Barca.

No matter how much people criticize his time at Barcelona but if you look at it closely that is what made him the player he is today. His understanding of the game sky rocketed after playing for Barça. His 2nd season at Barça is really underrated.

I’ve always liked Griezmann, so when he came to Barca I was excited. But sadly it didn’t go well because we were just a mess at the time and we didn’t utilize him that well.
How would you compare Jude’s free role dropping deep, drifting wide, making late runs into the box?

Just a note on formations. It’s funny how everyone describes this formation as a 3-5-2 when it’s a 5-3-2. In the old days teams were slammed for being defensive and using a back 5, now it’s viewed as attacking. I get it depends how the team play that determines how attacking they are but it doesn’t change the fact that the base is a 5-3-2, just an attacking one.
Atletico need to splash the cash this offseason and bring in a player like Feyenoord's Calvin Stengs or Benifica's Rafa who is similar in their wide areas covered and great expected threat from passes, similar to Griezmann

Yes. Müller finds pockets and thinks three passes ahead for himself, Griezmann does both of these things for teammates. It's not a hard line, though.

You know, I don’t think him and Messi on Barcelona would’ve ever worked.
Maybe in the beginning of his career when he was a full on winger who would get onto balls and slot it past keepers. But as he aged he became more game iq orientated and wanted to dictate games. And even though it would be an amazing idea to have to play makers and two people who can strike the ball extremely well.
Messi and griezman both need to get on the ball to get a feel for the game. -if they don’t touch the ball they aren’t as confident?
Usually teams with a free role player just have one player doing that as it is done so they can have a guy always linking up play and easing the attacking and passing options for their teammates, 2 playmakers like messi and griezmann can't work together as it'd be like having 2 bag of teas but with no water to pour on them. Free role players (unless they are Firmino who ran, marked and pressed like hell) tend to not waste energy as much in terms of defensive effort as you usually want them fresh to be the ones who dictate play and score goals. although in Liverpool Salah would be the guy being set up to define plays and scores not Bobby.
So having 2 playmakers just makes you vulnerable defensively. a team is a team and you need players that complement each other's skills and weaknesses.

@@ezzeki1999Jude is different as he's more like a Kaka in terms of position (without as much magic as him) and plays/scores while being higher in the pitch like him, Ancelotti has been using lots of similar tactics as like when he coached Milan with Jude. I wouldn't say he's a free role since Jude doesnt involve himself much in build up or sideways phases when the ball is in the sides.
