Thank you for the post, Dear Axis. I grew up with the lute music of Mr. Dombois, and, though I do not know what happened to those albums, I am glad to come into contact with it again!
This music was never released on CD. I wonder why. The Baroque Lute I: Performed By Eugen M Dombois; Compositions By Weiss, Kellner, & Bach www.discogs.com/Weiss-Kellner-Bach-Eugen-M-Dombois-Die-BarockLaute-I-The-Baroque-Lute-I-Le-Luth-Baroque-I/release/4871173
I'm guessing it's because it wouldn't fit on the CD - at 20+ minutes it takes up a lot of space. Label likely thought it was better to release a single CD than a double, too.
It certainly was released on CD. I had a copy that was stolen together with all my other CDs. This was the first and only only one I replaced. Still listen to it more than any other. . .
It's a pity that Dombois didn't notice that Musette's bar 55 must be played between bars 45 and 46. This is a mistake by the copyist of the London manuscript which, with a little attention, is easily discovered. In this way the passage of min 14:42 which, played as it is written, makes no sense, becomes musically logical and intelligible
This waa such a classic recording. Still one of the best baroque lute recordings ever. The clarity of his playing is incredible.
I agree with you! There's nothing like this. I find myself returning to it often for that reason.
Great!
