Am impressive collection of embroidery yarn! An alternative to the Pantone books would be the Capsure - which will identify the closest Pantone match for any colour you point it it. It's not cheaper, though, but it might be possible to pick one up second hand if you want it! As for how I pick colours, I often potter about in color.adobe.com, picking a seed colour and then playing about with the colour relationships there to see if I can create a swatch I like.
Hi, idk if you found a solution but if you go to a paint store or hardware store where they custom mix paint, they usually have the Pantone colors and you can get paint chips
