    I love the Jaguar version, it was very unique for the system. I also enjoyed the Jag-specific cheats (the fake CD "loading" screen, 32X Doom mode, High Voltage staff, Atari's Leonard Tramiel). Yeah, the music wasn't as good but it's still tons of fun!

    I have to wonder, doesn’t the Saturn version feel a bit flat? It’s missing animation frames, particularly the crowd, which moves less than other versions. We’re also missing he lightbulb flashes in the stands. The arcade is notably more fluid and colorful. The PSX version looks slightly more polished than Saturn, but also cut from the same cloth (wouldn’t be surprised if they share the same program code, and the Saturn version was rushed). Both 32-bit versions have tougher AI which is either a plus or a minus. Honestly, the Atari Jaguar version feels closest to the coin-op and has very fluid and colorful graphics. I always liked the way Jag presented color. It’s not arcade perfect but it’s very close, and the programmer did have access to the arcade code as reference.

      NONE of the Acclaim versions of the game are quite right, no matter how they look, and it’s all in the little nuances in gameplay mechanics that they either altered, sped up, or outright changed.

      The psx version is the best and it's not really close, Saturn has been way over praised. Saturn just copied psx version but it has more flaws than psx version. Original arcade port was designed and focused for psx as its launch title.

      I feel like this is from a lack of sound optimization for the SPC 700, because NBA Hangtime on SNES didn’t have this issue and was a FAR superior port job despite the original game being a much bigger deal visually than NBA Jam TE arcade.

      RETRO GAMING ARTS Thiight about it but I just wanted the games to stand in their own, without my dumb opinions cluttering it up. Part of the comparison is music and sound effects, so my talking would have compromised that as well. The Saturn is a good version, I'm confident out of all them the playstation was the only direct arcade port. 1) it's the only platform that used the idiot box tutorials during gameplay like the arcade, and 2) the AI is balls hard difficult even on very easy. I've yet to win a single game on PlayStation lol. 32x is the one I've played the most, and the one I've beaten championship on, and game gear and PC is the versions I bought at release. Game gear to take everywhere, PC to play at home. I had never even played the game boy, genesis, jaguar, or playstation versions until the recording of this video, so I didn't have any nostalgic ties to those. The SNES is decent, but no music made it a huge setback from all the others. There ya go :)

      I've played the PS1 version & IMO it's one of the best- even if it's not arcade perfect, it's close. That arranged soundtrack is great. Saturn doesn't look bad either.

    It seems that in the Saturn version, the sprites are slightly larger than the arcade and Ps1 version. I don't know if it has to do with the Resolution being smaller, causing them to stretch out the graphics, but it seems that way. The Ps1 version more or less, matches the Arcade resolution. However they both[Ps1 and Saturn] are missing the camera flashes from the arcade, but most sound effects and and audio have been maintain in both of them.

    • @Darknight0681
      @Darknight0681 3 роки тому +1

      Neither are a match for the arcade. Arcade was at over 400 pixels wide and NO home system was doing that at the aspect ratio the arcade’s visuals wanted. Both version have altered visuals.

      Michael Joseph yeah upon release I only had the game Gear and PC version. I always assumed the pc version was really good but comparatively speaking it's about dead middle with all the others. 32x I got in 2005 and it's my most played version. It's the only version I've gotten the championship on so I've played hours of that one. I enjoy the 32x for the same reasons you mentioned.

    I grew up playing NBA Jam fist at the arcade and then TE on SNES. Imo Hangtime on N64 was the best version, they should have kept the NBA Jam name and made a series out of it. The name change and the biggest Stars Jordan, Shaq and Barkley missing is what hurt the game the most imo.

    SNES version lacks in-game music and thus feels lifeless. wtf?! even the Game Boy and Game Gear versions had music!
    PC looks flat like a pancake.
    And Jaguar in-game music went Conan the Barbarian style :D
    Anyway I wonder if I should get Genesis or 32X version. 32X has scaling but otherwise doesn't seem like a major upgrade. Your thoughts?

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  6 років тому +2

      my thoughts: if its between genesis or 32x, 32x all day long. its just the better port all around. but if you can, i'd say saturn is the best port out of everything listed. it just feels right gameplay wise. and has cd audio.

      @@khuntington Noted. But how are the loadings on Saturn? And how it compares to the PS1 version?

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  6 років тому

      psyance loading on Saturn is basically an 8 second load to get the main menu, a 15 second load for the first quarter to start, an 8 second load to get the first substitution, a 15 second load for the second quarter to start, rinse repeat. The PlayStation I don't think is worth even looking at because even in very easy the CPU is nuts cheap. Like I played the mavericks the other day and the first quarter ended at 22 to zero. I could t make a single shot. When I got even close to the 3 pt line they would go in a frenzy swiping at the ball. It makes bloodborne look a picnic. Playstation offers the same amount ofnloading as well, but it also has a 8 second load time just to load up the NBA copyrights and trademarks at the disc boot, and a 2 second load to get to "tonight's matchup" screen, in addition to all the loads I mentioned on the Saturn. The presentation is the best in playstation, but I think the programmers signed off on a gold master that had the wrong settings for difficulty, as easy is still BALLS hard and cheap.

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  6 років тому

      Keep in mind those load times are using an original Saturn and an original PlayStation 1 unit. Emulators the times will vary in sure.

Figured it wasnt worth spending $ on a game I already had. i look at it differently now. i personally always thought that the ps1 version was basically arcade perfect... but yeah even though the genesis and snes were capable machines, they just we're near the technical power of an arcade board. like not even close. the boards midway were using were closer to the ps1/saturn than anything. the genesis board was basically the same board that was in the system 16 machines, which that board debuted in 1985. thats what powered shinobi, fantasy zone, eswat, altered beast in arcades. i don't think there's any way at all that the system 16 boards could have delivered what midway did with jam te.
