Lightning is the spark that can be seen in the sky during rains and thunder is the loud sound heard just after lightning.though they occur at the same time lightning is seen before thunder is heard ,this is because the speed of light is much more than the speed of sound.The speed of light in air or vaccum is approximately 3*10⁸m/s and the speed of sound in air is 343m/s.Thus,the light from lightning travels to us much faster than the sound produced by it.

The reason for the delay in hearing the thunder, is due to the difference in the speed of light and sound. Light propagates millions times faster than sound.
Lightning is see to be earlier during the thunderstroms this is because the lightning travels with more speed than sound produced in a thunderstorm
The speed of sound (344 ms) is far less than the speed of light 3×108 ms in air.
Thus sound of thunder will take more time to reach the observer compared to light.
