My rule of thumb...practise with the strap on your guitar so it is just resting on your prefered leg. When you stand up your hands etc are in the same position and therefore much more comfortable
Good video, thanks! I think one use the classical position only if started with classical guitar! For instance I use to play classical as a kid then I quit and I started again 25 years later and even if I totally forgot how to play fingestyle, that imprinting it's still there. I actually was upset with myself as I couldn't (and I still can't!) play with the guitar on the right leg like most people, but I find it very uncomfortable, my back hurts and also my right shoulder, so I realized that my early lessons made me connected with the classical position so that's how I play my electric guitar!
To me it depends on your play style. If youre more of just a riffer then playing low works fine. If youre more of a lead player then up high is better. I like to shred so mine is set a little high. The top cut away is right below my left nipple. lol. That's how I remember where to set it.
I had not even realized until relatively recently that I was playing differently than most everyone else I'd seen on YT. ( Been playing since mid 2015 but never any lessons, so I'm sure I have bad habits-a-plenty) I sit with the guitar on my left leg; I'm right handed & play mainly Soloists or RGs. I do use a folding guitar foot-rest too. I got so nervous when I finally noticed and tried to switch but I just can't. Luckily I researched and found that all is not lost but it makes me wonder what else might I be doing either incorrectly or in a way that adds needless difficulty or yields poor results...
This is why i play Flying V´s. Please usually say that they unconfortable for playing sitting down. But its just a matter of getting use to it. It just a pefect guitar fo the classical position. You just have to adjust the position of the guitar with the right leg.
With the regular position it utilises room space a lot better, because I find that classical puts the neck a lot further away from you which is detrimental if you're in a small room like I am. Although it think it's obvious that classical is still superior
+Miles Hodges playing a v-guitar kinda makes it a habit, after playing v guitar more than year now it is the only position i can play, no matter what is the shape of the guitar.
+Barış Karasakız I've never even owned a V but I want to but anyway my 2 main guitars are a Les Paul and ESP M1000 (strat style) but for some reason I like the classical position best
if you play live with a band in a agressive genre of music the Low position is the most preferable one cause it allows you to play more agressive and to move around or headbang (while playing ) way more easily
Towards the end of the video where that strap is way way up the neck that's the way that John and George did back in the day the early Beatles pictures prior to Rubber Soul if you take a good look they played that way all the time
Hi I've been playing for over 40 years mostly funk and r&b.When i practice at home or in the studio I'm more or less sitting down. When I do a solo i do it very well when i get on stage i find myself looking for the positioning on the neck.Could that be because when I'm sitting i tilt my guitar back toward me so i see the neck and frets easier. When I stand I tend to look over my guitar to see the neck.Wonder if anyone else have this habit and is there any solution for this.
You look like a Dave Mustaine brother, only with straight and dark hair... cool ;). And about guitar position... I also like position 3. It is so natural and easy to play, and to palm mute while fast tremolo picking, just amazing. I have a V guitar(my first guitar) so sitting down and playing is hard. I have to lean towards the neck and it feels unnatural, so I had to find a good standing position to play. Also I LOVE how it looks! Maybe not with your guitar(What I mean is that it is "short" at the bottom, while any V is way longer thus looks better in that position), but with BC Rich V?! Besides I also LOVE how one of the Hoffman brothers looks with his guitar on the cover of Deicide live album, When Satan Lives. He is the blond one, on the left of the photo. It looks like he is hugging that guitar, squeezing all its powers out of it!
Good news everyone! [/professorfarnsworthvoice] With the advent of modern progressive metal culture, the higher guitar standing position is now much more commonly witnessed at live rock performances. It's like the new cool so to speak, and the sign of serious virtuosos. Animals as Leaders being a prime example. I mean, hey, if it's a good enough position for John Petrucci of all people to play guitar, it's good enough for the rest of us!
Can you please make a video about how to sit properly while playing guitar that is way huge for you? Am having a hard time doing it, I wonder if there's a steps idk to do it easier, am like 150 cm high, and kinda have short arms, your steps are cool but still loose for my size, thank you for reading this.
Explorer in the high, just can't look good on anyone. Since I'm terrible at lead, I prefer to look good playing brutal rhythm down low. Good video man, somehow this helped.
Im not use to standing up by im getting a lot of pain in my wrist from standing up that doesnt feel normal any tips on how to fix this or anything like that
have you tried adjusting the strap so that your guitar is higher? You might look wonky but it's better than having your guitar low and ruining your body.
I wear it nice n low when i do riffs.. But while soloing i lift it up like slash.. Looks so cool 😎.. While sitting though i elevate my left leg n keep my guitar on that.
Too many worry about looking cool. It's like girls and very high heels lol. Destroying their backs, and feet... For a guitarist, when beginning back in those years, you saw Jimmy page wearing it sooo low, then hundreds got tendinitis trying to copy it. Everyone has a different built body, just put where YOU know it feels best!!!
I like the neutral position good..but the problem I face is I cannot see the strets properly..because there is no angle on the guitar and so the frets are not visible to the eyes...Any solution for this..Thanks
I've never understood why anyone would play with their guitar propped over their right leg, even if you have your leg elevated it's just awkward . What's the blue thing on the headstock ?
i like your channel :) but holy fuck, im playing music not in a fucking fashion show i couldnt care less about how i look although my hair can do more than cover for the uncoolness of how high or low my guitar is. im planning on just putting my guitar high like real high to where im comfortable.
I didnt really say it to mean it was like a "fact", those are just two guys I think that are known for the low strap. I didnt think Angus was known for it but I will look for some pics or video to see.
Not a good idea for smallholders like yours truly. I already have to play in 'claw', since 'axe handle grip', with the thumb going over the edge of the fretboard reduces my useable finger length so dramatically, it ruins my satrianisms. Hanging the guitar low, would mean I can't maintain a forward wrist angle, so hang'em high, is what I say.
it's the same when I use a flying V...man. Just like a babe sitting in between my leg. I dunnn have boobs...I dont need the guitars to hold up my man boobs when I play standing up ....just saying.
Who cares whether anyone thinks you look cool while playing? If you care what others think of you THAT much, you probably shouldn't be on a stage, because some people will like what you offer and others won't. OK...maybe nobody will like what you play. If you're worried about how cool you look AND nobody likes what you're playing, what's that going to do to your self-esteem? Unload your shits, rat's asses and fucks so you don't have any to give and just play with the guitar in a position that complements your playing style. Good video and thanks for posting.
That was not even close to as low as James Hetfield holds it. Joan Jett holds hers lower then you showed. Never seen any one asking for help sitting and playing. No one wants to look like a dork playing. EVERYONE wants to look cool while playing. Beatles looks like major dorks. They were breaking through norms. They hadn't seen the coolness of holding a guitar low yet.
My rule of thumb...practise with the strap on your guitar so it is just resting on your prefered leg. When you stand up your hands etc are in the same position and therefore much more comfortable
What shampoo should I use?
lol
+The Wolf you feed All of them.
Yes
I play low, but not to look cool. It allows me to get a more percussive attack and wrap my thumb around the top for bar chords a la Jimi Hendrix
i used to practice standing up. now that ive been practicing sitting ,when i try standing for gigs its harder haha this is frustrating
Thanx man
This information is very useful.
Good video, thanks!

Rob Covello
Lmao
It depends on the physiological landscape on which said nipple is situated.
Just under mine = ouch! :-)
I had not even realized until relatively recently that I was playing differently than most everyone else I'd seen on YT. I find my Jackson King V pro (1993) comfortable while sitting, just have to get used to it.
It's teachers like this that help. The simple stuff, step by step. Nothing cagey, nothing implied...here's what you do and here's how you do it.
With the regular position it utilises room space a lot better, because I find that classical puts the neck a lot further away from you which is detrimental if you're in a small room like I am. Although it think it's obvious that classical is still superior
That was very helpful, thank you. I like how you address posture issues as well.
That's a gorgeous guitar, by the way! What kind is it?
Not an expert on these guitars, but to me looks like a PRS SE Custom 22, whale blue
Thank you, Joe. I should know by now that the real answer is "out of your price range, missy" :)
Prs
actually its quite cheap
I can't do anything else other than the classical position sitting down
+Miles Hodges playing a v-guitar kinda makes it a habit, after playing v guitar more than year now it is the only position i can play, no matter what is the shape of the guitar.
+Barış Karasakız I've never even owned a V but I want to but anyway my 2 main guitars are a Les Paul and ESP M1000 (strat style) but for some reason I like the classical position best
I play even lower than position 2. I don't know, just hit pretty hard on the strings and that fits my style the best and is most comfortable for me
if you play live with a band in a agressive genre of music the Low position is the most preferable one cause it allows you to play more agressive and to move around or headbang (while playing ) way more easily
Thank you for this! One of my biggest problems is transitioning from sitting to standing while playing.
classical way of sitting is straight up the best. It also takes strain away from your elbow and shoulder
my right shoulder rises up when I play the guitar ..why does it happen and is it fine and natural to happen or is it unwanted strain
Towards the end of the video where that strap is way way up the neck that's the way that John and George did back in the day the early Beatles pictures prior to Rubber Soul if you take a good look they played that way all the time

mirecmusic there should be a dot or something telling you where the frets are.
@@MrLump Hell, I need to see the strings, too. XD

Thanks for tips. Cobain didn’t wear his guitar that low though
When standing, only the high position works for me now. Maybe later with more practice I will be able to play lower.
Good news everyone! [/professorfarnsworthvoice]

High slung player here and proud (and yes, I am also a music major). Also helps with hiding the pizza stains on your shirt.
You forgot the cross leg position
This was a good video. I liked how he says "DEE-OWN" instead of "down"
Can you please make a video about how to sit properly while playing guitar that is way huge for you? Am having a hard time doing it, I wonder if there's a steps idk to do it easier, am like 150 cm high, and kinda have short arms, your steps are cool but still loose for my size, thank you for reading this.
I utilize and love the foot stool although I get teased for using one.
it's really hard to get used to playing standing up after years of playing sitting down , all those solo ive learnt become unplayable
Explorer in the high, just can't look good on anyone. Since I'm terrible at lead, I prefer to look good playing brutal rhythm down low. Good video man, somehow this helped.

I have a double neck guitar. When I stand I feel like the guitar tips down to my left. Do you have any tips?
Yeah my problem is there’s too much neck dive and I dunno how to fix that without a strap that doesn’t have neck dive
You have to get used to the wrist angle while standing? What? Shouldn’t your wrist be as straight as possible?
I like the neutral position good..but the problem I face is I cannot see the strets properly..because there is no angle on the guitar and so the frets are not visible to the eyes...Any solution for this..Thanks
cool vid man, tnks
I play a V whats the best way to sit with that?
playing low is just too damn tough for me , but then I am a big fan of slash and I just have to !!
And besides those three, there are many, many more positions one could use as well.
not very experienced playing standing, so I am gonna be using the highest position until I can get it lower.
What about the guitar down by your knees, when standing? Now, THAT'S COOL!!!
It's not about looking cool but sounding cool!
Short strap standing or sitting. Otherwise = back pain wrist pain.
you have to try DROPSTRAP.com , that will open up a new world of options
thanks man
Now how does this work when you play v’s
I've never understood why anyone would play with their guitar propped over their right leg, even if you have your leg elevated it's just awkward . What's the blue thing on the headstock ?
Dspeir It's a clip on tuner.
Chord TheSeeker Thanks, I not up on all the new gadgets . But I thought it might be something like that . I just wasn't sure :)
Left leg is awkward to me.
What kind of guitar is that? Anyone know?
It's a PRS Custom.
DAAAYM. That PRS
thanks :)
Standing pos. 3 = John Petrucci
I was about to say this =)
playing standing up is better form me
To me BC Rich Warlocks or V style guitars are most comfortable for sitting down. I mostly stand when playing though.
The Beatles' position is the best one, whether "it looks cool" or not, what truly matters is the health of your body.
what would happen to my body?
you will have probably pain in back. sooner or later .... or posibly some other injuries that you don´t want to hear about.
"what would happen to my body?" It would slowly change into that of George Harrison :-)
Unless youre playing metal, you have it around your ankles
I utilize the left leg all of the time lol
I think you shouldn't care about how you look, if the last position is the best then play like that. Its all about the music.
i like your channel :)
but holy fuck, im playing music not in a fucking fashion show i couldnt care less about how i look although my hair can do more than cover for the uncoolness of how high or low my guitar is. im planning on just putting my guitar high like real high to where im comfortable.
Issue I have is my gut making the guitar stick out lol
I thought Mike mangini is playing guitar
Jimmy Page invented the low position with the guitar........then the late Steve Clark from Def Leppard.....
I didnt really say it to mean it was like a "fact", those are just two guys I think that are known for the low strap. I didnt think Angus was known for it but I will look for some pics or video to see.
Steve Clark wore his super fucking low. It was absurdly low. But god damn if he wasn't super fucking cool
+John McLellan Got that right John. In the Live In The Round video the guitar is almost at his knees. but yeah man was he cool!! Great comment!!!!
yeah. and now he suffer from back pain
7:03 😂😂😂
Does anyone else think he looks like Murr from Impractical Jokers?
I find it best to play the guitar behing my back, and with my teeth.
Guy wearing a polo is worried about looking cool
*Tosin Abasi* would disagree.
Lol
I can't see his feet!!!
it's the same when I use a flying V...man. Just like a babe sitting in between my leg.
I dunnn have boobs...I dont need the guitars to hold up my man boobs when I play standing up ....just saying.

Standing position 3 is not for females! 😅😂
Which position do you guys prefer...Dog style or what🤣
That was not even close to as low as James Hetfield holds it. Joan Jett holds hers lower then you showed.
