Damn it Archie, that is again one of the wisest pieces of advice I’ve heard from anyone in the watch community all year. This video deserves a comment and a like. 👍 I don’t care if the rest of the watch community sees you as a simple man at times, you are a diamond 💎 in the rough.
I bought a Rolex Submariner and now I give handy J's down at the docks to sailors and longshoremen for $10 a pop to pay for it but it was worth it 👌 😀, plus thanks to the the timing bezel I know how long it takes me to get the Sailors off.
Suuuuuuure, Archie No such thing as one and done for those of us in the watch community. If you do get down to one then it will simply be one at a time, constantly flipping. I'm trying to get down to 20, then hopefully 15. Ten would be fantastic...but it might be 8 or 9. No, no...11...yeah, that's it. Definitely not 12...well, unless...
Thought-provoking commentary. Excellent example of the collective action problem in game theory, as well as a community-based solution. Great start to the new year. Happy New Year to all.
It is so hard to get Rolex at an AD now, the popular models. I would not pay the premium flippers to sell for. I remember in the middle '90s to around the year 2000 I could go into a Rolex AD and get a 10 to 30 percent discount.
You're so right, mr. Pluta. For me one or two beautiful pieces, Rolex or another brand, could be a serous collection. It's easy for me to say, I'm not much of a 'flipper'
Tudor Black Bay 54 is my one and done automatic. I love that 37mm vintage / tool aesthetic with modern tech on my 6.5" wrist. A Casio G-Shock GW-5000U is my one and done beater quartz, again with vintage aesthetic and modern tech. Those two watches 😍
The only problem with one and done is what do you wear when it's being serviced? Sometimes this can last weeks or months with no watch? Maybe a two and done would work.....
Somehow thousands of Rolex watches are going gray market. It's beyond just flippers - I personally believe some AD's are selling direct to several different gray market dealers. Too many "new" Rolex watches are popping up for sale gray...
Prince Michael of kent has a Royal Oak that he has worn for years... it's in practically every photograph of every event he has attended. That makes it the most important Royal Oak in existence.
I love how for years he has said his one and done is the Rolex Explorer II “Polar dial” it’s stainless steel, it has date display, dual time zone, water proof etc. all his videos in the past THE ONE AMD DONE Rolex Explorer II. Cut to 2021 - 2022 Rolex Submariner?? He has no clue and changes daily? Can’t keep up
I'm trying to get to 4 watches, not counting G Shocks and beaters. I know many people who have one Rolex for life. None of them are in watch world, none of them understand having more than one watch.
Also you have to account for servicing costs and for appreciation. I never over pay for watches, but I always get them serviced. I'm not sure about selling for the price one bought it for. Like If you could be certain they would not flip it sure. I think perhaps swaps would be better, but that does not help the newbies get into it. Btw they can still get a manual wind rolex for under 5k from the 1950s.
Currently have a speedy man on the moon and breitling navitimer. The Speedy would be my one and done. Datejust two tone 18kt in 36mm has caught my eye for a third and final piece though.
Well said re the flippers, unfortunately greed drives folk to act in this way. Your collection except the pateks reflects mine and I must say I also feel a sense of freedom wearing my one and done Explorer 2 polar.
Nice video, Arch. I'll also add it's a nice bonding experience when you wear the same watch at least most of the time, especially if it's for many years. Think you overestimate the watch community, though. Don't think it's large enough to make a difference.
I show the ADs how to avoid flippers when I show them my photo on my phone wearing all the watches they have sold me as I hold this week's TV listings magazine.
It's a shame that watches like the Nautilus can't really be worn anymore. They get purchased as an investment and put in a bank vault. If they were still available at retail then the watches could actually be used rather than jammed in a safe for their whole existence.
Nah. I change watches sometimes 3 times a day. Each to their own. When your one and done is in service or God forbid damaged or lost what will you do then. Some people can multi task and figure out what they will wear with their outfit for their occasion.
The source of the problem is compounded by the internet’s obsession with Rolex. We are not feeding the curiosity and knowles of watch enthusiasts here, but Rolex investors. Flipping is not an issue in the world of Breguet, JLC, Zenith etc. We want what we can’t have, whether we want it or not. 🙃
Hope Rolex could introduce a "Post Register Process" to all the Purchaser "Yearly for 3 Years" . All Owner must walk-in with the Masterpiece to RSC or Rolex AD to verify their Identity and to prove their not a Flipper else will be Black List. This process will not stop the potential of Rolex Future Value however can also have a much more Healthier Rolex Market.................if Rolex Service Center (RSC) is fully control by Direct Rolex than RSC are the best Key Department to do this task. Post Register Process proposal is to kill the flippers because of the 3 years "Lock-In-Period" else this will never stop...........SAD World for all Watch Lover........All still subject to Rolex themselves........Sadly!! we can just pray!!...........I owned few Rolex and Love and still hope to own more as collection..........SAD Rolex Supporter !!;)
BS. They know exactly what they have produced and it's the marketing of Hermes handbag model. This has nothing to do with 'flippers' whatever that even means in a freely bought and sold market, it's human nature and I want something not obtainable. If there was suddenly a retooling to a handful of hot models creating a glut, within a year half these wannabe owners wouldn't even want one leaving plenty for you collectors.
Two and done: ROLEX SUBMARINER and Parnis knockoff, for manual labor job .Three and done: add an OYSTER PERPETUAL. FOUR and Done: Bliger man on the fake 🌙 moon. . . 😄
ARCHIE I agree please sell me your Sub, Millie and polar explorer 2 at retail to me. The watch community will thank you and so will I. Pm me with the details. Toodle loo.
My rotation at home is 2 or 3 watches, the rest in the bank. So normally only sporting a 3pc collection, and its more than enough. Kinda need more pieces that have a date but not a diver.
Not anti gray, but anti flipper…aren’t gray dealers flippers by trade?? Our little watch community is the small minority btw, the avg. buyer who don’t have collections make up the bulk of the business.
I've changed my watches 3 times while watching this video :-)
This comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Message to the community : embrace the one and done philosophy, sell your other watches and send the proceeds to Phatboy.

Thought-provoking commentary. Excellent example of the collective action problem in game theory, as well as a community-based solution. Great start to the new year. Happy New Year to all.

Great advice, I have the Explorer 2 42 mm black dial as a daily. Datejust 41 mm and some G-shock to support.
Great setup!

I dont think a one and done watch is possible for actual watch enthusiasts. Any watch I buy I plan on keeping for the rest of my life.
No question that the black sub date with ceramic bezel is the one and done watch. Good for all occasions.
