Yeah now a days that would be a penalty, especially in the NFL. However when this was written there wasn't nearly as much protection extended to the quarterback by the rules as there is today. And the lower the level you go the less protection officials afford to QBs (from my personal playing experience). Plus from what I can remember Eyeshield 21 wasn't always accurate with what they did portray lol 😂 but still a great anime and an awesome show about football.

Considering Shin's strength, it's a miracle that no one simply pulled the "injured" card to remove him from play. The correct move is to actually pull a tackle like your linemen to intercept the RB. After all, if the Trident Tackle is replaced with a punch to the gut would you still be rooting for Shin?

The irony that when you realise that AGON is technically the most legal player (having natural light-speed reflexes isn't illegal) outside of being rough on opponents but not rough enough to get him banned, aside from punching the referee at the end. Shin's illegal blocks and Hakushu's strategy of using Gaiou to deliberately KO the opponent team's linemen by injuring them to force their QB to concede are pretty much one way tickets to a gallery of Red cards and bans. Note that a full sack (complete flattening of opponent's linemen) isn't illegal, but if this is used to remove them from play then it's illegal.

No, roughing the passer would only apply if he had already thrown the ball and was hit too late or was tackled at the head, making it a targeting penalty.
When this came out it wasn't a penalty back then, now it would be a roughing the passer penalty for going low/hitting the legs...but then again this is Japanese high school football, they might not have such a penalty.
