Just my 2 cents. After careful consideration about "what" is truly needed, my Honda EU22OOi produces enough power for the fridge, furnace, lights and essential things during a short power outage. No brainer. It's quiet, reliable and worth the cost. Even in winter. Alberta Canada. Cheers! 😊 Great video! 👍

Remember that portable generators come in two types, inverter and regular. The Inverter generator is needed for high tec electronics such as computers, etc. Inverter generators produce "clean" sine wave electricity, where regular generators produce dirty sine wave electricity. If you try and run your computer with dirty electricity, you may burn up your computer, etc.

Here is how it will work. Frequent power issues then you get a generator then you rarely will need it. If you get a portable generator highly recommend you get or convert it to propane or natural gas. this will significantly make life easier and safer. Kits are not expensive. Gasoline goes bad over time even if you extend the time with stabilizer but Propane keeps fresh for a long time. I run a 2.5 ton central heat pump with a soft start box for the compressor and have no issues with a troy bilt 7.5 k gen Plus lights,Tvs, Fans and can run 2 electric burners on the stove. To heat the water you have to temporarily turn off the AC but once your WH is full of hot water turn it off and you can rur the heat pump again.

Portable, no maintenance scheduled plans, portable can go way higher than 12.5k. 40k generac portable, 16gal tank, runs the hardware store 3800$, my cost. My 2000+ sqft home requires 12.5k but runs everything, 2 fridges, water heater, and alternate dryer. I've been playing with watts and amps on each side, full on, just to see what I need.
My heater, I can flip a breaker on unit to make one element work. Nope, I went full on. 15k startup and 12k running is my minimum.

My current power outage/grid down plan is based on two smaller trifuel inverter generators (2400w and 4000w 240v) with the ability to power critical needs on just one. I will be installing a 12,000w battery backup this year which will allow me run one generator just a few hours a day to recharge the batteries. Next year I will install solar panels to have the system start to pay for itself with lower electric bills. I concider this to be an insurance policy except instead of just paying premiums, this policy will pay for itself.

Just understand that propane or NG produces MUCH less power from a portable generator than what gas does. So, size accordingly if that's the route you're going.

You did not answer the question of size. You touched on it for portable generators, but not for Standby generators. You should change the title to: What type of generator should you buy.

I still don’t know what size generator I need. You tried to answer, what “type” of generator I need, not what size.

400 AMP SERVICE?! My power company would only give me a 100 amp service twenty three years ago.

    Here is te answer:
If you have not installed the connections on your home then you need a 800 to 2000 watt generator other than that is waste of time and money unless you are planning to do it in the future.

You should be titled what type of generator. The question of what size is left unanswered. Also most homeowners are not buying 12,000 watt portable generators. 4k to 9k would be more realistic.
