Robin Pecknold (songwriter) said that the lyrics of this song is: "lyrically fairly meaningless. As an introduction to the record, we thought it would be nice to start it with a simple jam that's focussed on singing - on the record it starts with a tongue-in-cheek harmony thing that we hoped would make people laugh or something but I think it just confuses them. This is my favorite song to play live, though singing it live is sometimes difficult because the lyrics are so vague. Weird how that works!"

A really cool indie song that makes me feel really warm and hopeful and christmasy but it’s really dark and kind of scary
That red scarf line reminds me of that old story with the woman who always wore a red scarf or else her head would fall off

I'm in Chorus and we are broken up into two choirs: Chorus and Advanced Chorus. Advanced Chorus sang this at our concert last night and the rest of us stood up and started this huge clapping chain. It was comically amazing
this song is about the revolution, they wore coats up to their necks and had red scarves and when somebody was following the 'pack' if they turned around they'd be beheaded

Actually, it's not. Robin Pecknold said this song was about all of his best friends losing their innocence.
In the beginning of the song, he is following his friends which are all children as described in the song. The red scarfs are their "loss of innocence" as red represents danger and violence. When he turns around, he sees that another one of his friends is lost as he falls in the snow staining it red with blood. This represents the "loss of innocence" as well because white represents purity and innocence and he has stained it red.

Sydney Lin -- According to Robin Pecknold the writer of this song and the lead vocalist of Fleet Foxes the group singing this song, the meaning behind the song was from his childhood. He went to school and hung around with the same guys everyday from kindergarten through high School. It sickened him how suddenly they all just changed, some becoming drug dealers. He watched as their friendships fell apart based on choices some of his life long friends had made.
If they didn’t have a red scarf then they would be deemed as not part of the pack, they would be seen as a spy or something

I wouldn't call it spooky, the band allegedly put nonsense together just for the sake of a cool song and when i first heard ot it i thought it was about a kid falling and dying from breaking his head open. Still love it.
When I was a small I went ice skating for the first and only time in my life.
A kid around my age at the time slipped and split his head wide open my father who was with me at the time was trying really hard to keep me from looking and well it didn't work because blood got all over the rink and eventually I peeked across it to see his family peeling him off the ice. Luckily the boy survived but even now 21 years later I've never really wanted to go ice skating ever again.

Idk and Idc what people assume or what the meaning of the lyrics actually are.
Whenever I hear this song, I think of winter but fun winter.
I'm talking sledding, ice skating, snowball fights, building a snowman, making snow angels, probably somebody falling in love as the snow lightly drifts down, friends laughing, the scenery of snowy mountains and snow on pine trees.
I think it's one of those songs that you can have fun with, even if the meaning is quite dark, like children playing the "London bridge" or "Ring around the rosey" where the meaning behind it doesn't come to mind.
Makes me think of the revolutionary war for some reason

I think this song might be about snowmen, because the red scarves would keep the heads of snow on the body, and Michael the snowman’s head must have fallen off, and the part of the song where Michael turned the white snow red might’ve meant the red scarf falling in the snow.
