- Faith leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury have backed proposals for a major shake-up of Britain’s “broken” asylum system, on the same day the Government’s Rwanda Bill returns to the Lords for a parliamentary showdown.
Migrants would be eligible to work in the UK after six months of waiting for an asylum decision and given free English language education on day one after arrival in the country under the recommendations.
The proposals are made in a report by the independent Commission on the Integration of Refugees, which also calls for the reinstatement of a refugees minister in Government.
The Most Rev Justin Welby, who in Parliament’s upper chamber has been a leading critic of Government legislation aimed at deporting some asylum seekers to Rwanda, is among religious figures supporting the recommendations.

We needed immigrants to win the wars. We’ve got our wealth from colonising other countries. The UK had to go and recruit immigrants in the 50s and 60s to prop up the NHS. Huge areas of land, some of which, the Church admitted they had lost records for, or said they weren't aware they owned due to poor record keeping. I"m not going do the work for you. Why is it relevant whether someone has a degree or not? My daughter studied at university for four years. First an undergraduate in biomedical science and then a research masters. Worked hard and got into a ridiculous amount of debt. She has applied for countless jobs and as yet not even had an interview. She is working in retail to get by for now but her two degrees have not blind bit of difference for her.

I watched a programme some years ago about Heathrow Airport. People without the correct visas, paperwork etc., were put back on planes and sent back to whence they came. So there is a system in place to tackle illegal entrants.
That's why they arrive on small boats (not on flights).

The channel crossings are a result of a lack of a political will to deal with the issue. These men would not be able to get to the northern coast of France (and all over western Europe) if the EU had secure borders. It's as simple as that.
