Billie Holiday at Art Ford's Jazz Party (Part One)

- This video focuses on one of the two broadcasts that still exist of Lady Day on Art Ford's critically acclaimed show, Jazz Party. Jazz Party, which debuted in May of 1958, was basically a ninety minute live television show showing the day's top musicians basically in a jam session. Many people were regulars such as Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and Billie herself.
Billie was featured on the show four times, but there are only two broadcasts that survive, both from July of 1958. This particular broadcast is recorded exactly one year before Lady's death on July 17, 1958..
The songs she sings are in order: "Moanin' Low", "Don't Explain", and "When Your Lover Has Gone".
Stay tuned for part two!

This was very painful to watch to see her physical deterioration yet the beauty still shines through. I'm so sorry the world lost Billie Holiday too soon, but she left us the gift of here music to enjoy for ages.
#Love2ULadyDay
Amen ✝️ to that 💗
How can she float along like that, seemingly timeless, and yet stay in tempo? The unique, Billie Holiday. Thank you!
Thank you!!!
IMO Billie did her best singing in the 1950's
This brings me to tears, not just because of how her looks had deteriorated, but because in spite of her appearance her voice was as masterful as ever. RIP Lady
Compared to modern music these songs are master pieces
Difícil aparecer outra intérprete tão excelente quanto Billie Holiday. Era perfeita na sua interpretação. Grata por compartilhar.
Now, this'n all of Billie's is timeless. What a gem!
Thank you so for giving us this treasure! ♥
Thanks again Nigel, for another Billie video I've never seen before.
WOW! What a gift! I'm gone ... thank you so so for dat ul!
Oh my Billie ... luv her so so so ... just love her, all of her being!
Thank you for this treasure.
Here Lady is really sick. But she looks bad ‘cause of the terrible lights in the studio; there are photos taken in the same period in which she is absolutely beautiful. Her voice sounds here like the voice of the little girl who has now returned to be.
Muchas gracias por compartirlo.
She was called "One of the Greatest Jazz Singer". And if this true, I have no doubt about it, why there are so less Videos with her? From Symphonie in black (1934) to Strange Fruit in England (1959), where 25years. And Billie, without Cabaret Card, was often Guest in TV- Shows. There gives Audio Evidences, but where the Film- Tapes? I know she die young. But 25 years Career are 25 years. A long time! Billie Holiday- Mysterious Lady!!
BILLIE HOLIDAY called "LADY DAY" is the greatest singer (Jazz, Blues ...) OF ALL TIMES! Now you know!!!!! Check out "Fine and Mellow" Live 1957 (with introduction)
BTW an investigation thats worth it is "LADY DAY" The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944). Then you'll understand why.
Volker K There are plenty of Video's on UA-cam.
There’s lack of tv footage and radio recordings of her (although she did many) because media companies in those days had “wiping” policies. It was expensive to archive and store footage since they were constantly recording (and not always live) and tape was exceptionally expensive to produce and buy new.
Some of the film and audio tape could literally be wiped, processed with chemicals and then reused to be recorded over again (and it was used several times before it degraded and was no longer viable any more).
Much of classic tv and radio was lost to this because in those days, no one at the networks imagined people would be wanting to watch or listen to these interviews and performances again. Tv soaps and dramas that ran were recorded, shown once, then wiped because there was never expectation they’d be rerun. Doctor who lost classic several episodes to oblivion by wiping, British comedy series like Steptoe & Son lost MANY episodes to wiping.
Luckily someone recognised the importance of these recordings and archived them so we have performance footage of Lady outside of her short parts in two movies. Hopefully some day someone happens upon more of them.

I am saddened by all the negativity in comments about Billie's voice, her appearance. She sounds and looks bad because of the AWFUL sound and picture quality of this "copy of a copy of a copy" of what was actually broadcast. Billie is singing great here -- she's singing in tune and with great expressiveness. Watch her a year earlier on "The Sound of Jazz," a one hour live CBS broadcast. Listen to her last two albums, "Lady In Satin " also from 1958, and "Billie Holiday," (now called "Last Recording" on the CD reissue) from 1959, the year she died. All three of these -- the TV show and the two LPs, now on CD, are LOVELY works of art!
This video wasn’t preserved very well
Eventho the video is crappy u can still see how high she was!! But it aint wat u do its how u do it and it gave her the best raspy voice that was in her time....
I’m very surprised to see a female guitarist during this time!
🌟💫✨️😶🌫️✨️💫🌟
💫🌟🧚♀️💖🧚♂️🌟💫
She was killed by a racist police which is laws are still being used evil doers devil smh Rip Lady
Yup the beginning of jailing black and poc with drug possession. She wouldn’t back down on singing Strange Fruit and Anslinger made her life a hell. Planting moles, destroying her and dying handcuffed to a hospital bed.
I mean yea but her caused of death is because her liver stopped working......
Makes me feel sad seeing her in this state. Her glorious time had gone!
Her voice has completely gone and she looks terrible. This clip has to be removed in respect to Lady Day!!
clearly you dont understand blues....listen to tenderly by billie holiday then listen to sarah vaughan tenderly...you know why many jazz singers like frank sinatra said shes the greatest..
Nate Cole
And you don't understand nothing about good music! Check out this recorded 1937! That's Lady Day THE JAZZ SINGER !!!
This is simply horror!
clearly you dont understand what blues is all about...whitney houston, mariah carey could not and cant sing the blues...
i know its about feeling....i guess we are different....i like the likes of etta jones as opposed to ella fitsgerald
She lived an incredibly rough life from beginning to end. Her voice has always comforted me, her voice portrayed her pain and also toughness. Did her voice change yes but I love lady in satin and that was the last album. I love her for all tones but either way she was one who suffered greatly and it will forever be heard by generations to come.
