Middle Class as Portrayed in the Works of Akhteruzzam Elias | KCC Baithakkhana | KCC

A discussion between Sajjad Sharif and Amitabha Malakar moderated by Chandril at KCC Baithakkhana - A Bengali Literary Meet took place on the fourth floor of Kolkata Centre for Creativity from 19th - 21st April 2024. This was a three-day literary meet where we delved deeper into Bengali literature, films, songs, theatre, art, aesthetics, food, and more!

ভালো লাগলো। মধ্যবিত্ত যখন মধ্যবিত্ততা ইলিয়াসের লেন্সে ফেলে দেখে, তখন তাঁর ভেতরটা বাইরে এসে দাঁড়ায়। শহর গ্রামে বেড়াতে যায়। গ্রাম শহরে এসে পড়ে রুটি রুজির তাগিদে। মাটি আঁকড়ে। আমি কখনো হাড্ডি খিজির হতে পাবোনা।

I really enjoyed the discussion. Elias is a genius at characterizing the middle class, and I could see many of his middle-class characters in myself.

Talking of ghosts, in our childhood it was rare nay nonexistent amongst our friends who did not believe in spirits or their colourful exploits.Now a days even children who believe in Santa Claus and tooth fairies dismiss ghost stories as old wives tales believable only by the wettest behind ears. Is complete urbanisation as the only explanation? Does Chandril whose mind touches many odd diverse topics have any other explanation?
