    Nick, if you're ever looking for some crazy exotic wood and burls, I know a great eBay store that has the highest quality of exotics! exotic-wood-n-burls is the name of the store, you'll see a crazy wooden sculpture that they created for their picture. You can probably just search for black and white ebony, iron wood burl, Asian Satin burl, Sinora burl, Wild Almond burl, or Mun Ebony and find them. I believe that they ship everywhere, and they do both buy it now and auctions every week! Tell them I sent ya 😀... truly amazing people, it's all family ran from getting the wood in Laos to making the sculptures and then cutting and selling the wood!

      Nick Zammeti NZ WoodTurning no problem! Just leave the Asian Satin with birdeyes for me!!! 😂👍
      I have every piece they offer and pretty much everything is ready to turn besides the B&W ebony. It takes awhile to dry, so it's covered in wax. But the iron burl is crazy wicked, some of the best pieces have awesome bark inclusions that you can add some epoxy and pigment and make an incredible piece of art!

    • @he-mansuncle7661
      @he-mansuncle7661 7 років тому +1

      Nick Zammeti NZ WoodTurning Also, do you know if the guys you get your epoxy and pigments from ship to the states? I can't believe how hard it is to find pigment, that isn't so damn much!
      I only need 3-4 colors and not that much of any since I'm doing 2 projects with it.
      Hell, I'd trade you some wood for pigments lol 😂😂📦🇬🇧🛫🛬✈️🚏
      I do have some killer pieces haha

    Stupid question I’m sure but I’m not familiar with these processes. Is the pressure pot used to remove the air? I’ve seen crafts done with resin that use a torch to remove the bubbles after it cures. I’m assuming the pressure pot basically removes that step.

      Nick Zammeti NZ WoodTurning if you want to make something really funky and amazing, get some veneer samples or "variety packs"!!!
      I got an exotic variety pack and put one on top of the other while using gorilla glue in between. I used probably 6-8 ounces of glue lol but it turned out stronger than plywood!!! It's hard as a rock and when sanded, it's look is amazing! The grain patterns you get are awesome! You could get a pack for around $15 and if you cut it, you would definitely have enough for a bowl to turn!

    What you should do is use a mesh strainer to remove all the wood dust shavings. That way with clear resin, the wood pieces would come out much clearer, rather than letting all the really small dust pieces cloud the resin making it darker than usual.

    A little pro tip to help you mixing resin. If you go to the local thrift store, you can find mixing beaters, like you'd use for baking and if you install them on a drill, they're perfect for mixing resin. You can get about 30 uses out of them, before either cleaning with a grinder or just tossing, but it'll save you so much time, compared to hand mixing and you'll get better consistency every time.

    OK, so next time you do this..... How about making a thin layer of each wood color in resin. Maybe do the dark shavings in white resin, and the lighter ones in black. So you end up with a stack of flat sheets of resin 'cards'? Then you 'glue' them together with more resin (clear, or a solid color, something that looks good with the color of 'cards' being used). So now you have a block of striped dark resin/wood, resin, light resin/wood, etc...Something like the colored layered wood you've used before. That would likely look awesome. Even if you just used all dark shavings in white resin, glued together with white... the dark stripes of the shavings would probably look great. Just a thought!

  • @ericmoorehead9701
    @ericmoorehead9701 7 років тому

    I have attempted to replicate your technique. I used wood turnings from the lathe. The glued cylinder blanks I ended up with had many, many bubble holes through the piece. Turning it does not help. Curious as to what I might have done wrong? Too little glue, wrong wood shavings? I did not put in a pressure pot-left standing overnight. Thanks in advance for your insights.

    Check out Peter Brown's channel, specifically the video called Son of Lava bowl. He mixes a certain resin with a type dye color that makes a reaction when you mix them that's really cool! You may like it and hopefully try it. I'm sure he wouldn't mind lol

    Anyone like to hazard a guess as to why my laptop screen is being scrolled and my cursor shoved around (esp. towards the right edge/top right corner, "window close X"). Interesting coincidence that I randomly came to this video when 2 days ago I had cooking oil spattered into my eye. Must get some protective eyewear..

    That Spectra-ply came out really dark for all the light colored chips and clear resin.

    That small purple one would be excellent as a small change bowl.

    Very cool..Just can't tell how much resin you used for all those tests.. Can you tell me approx amount of resin by volume needed is needed for 1 liter of fine saw dust??? i also will be using it to fill hollow objects i make for strength only...so it does not have to be so runny.... i am hoping 7 parts saw dust to 1 part resin will or less will work... i can use a stick to fill and don't need to pour...any feed back is appreciated... thanks

    If you haven't made anything with these yet, may i recommend candle holders? The cylindrical or slightly shaped ones for pillar candles...

    I don't know why but for some reason 1 out of my 3 cats will watch your videos with me. I am usually lying in bed watching on my tablet and my cat lays next to me watching as I watch. Sometimes she tries to get so close to my tablet that I can't see. It looks like you have another fan. We will both continue watching your brilliant projects. Thanks for sharing.

    Where did you get those molds? They slide out so easily. Thanks.

    the green/blue one kinda reminds me of the inside of the egg of the creature from the movie water horse

    Based on the cost of resin, I am surprised that you don’t include a sacrificial cylinder of wood suspended from the top down. Perhaps hot glued to a mixing stick that would rest across the mold and rubber banded down before placing in the pressure pot. Something to chuck into lathe and remove later.

    You could cut the blanks into rounds perhaps and splice them into things. Or use them as medallions in the center of bowls? Just a thought. They are all quite lovely.

    This was the golden era of NZ videos. Like the Nick Zammeti show. Not too focused on the production, just spending some time with Nick.

    There's an interesting material that was developed in WWII called pykrete, that is made up of wood shavings and ice that is comparable of not better the concrete, that'd be interesting as a project.

    Not probably the effect you are looking for but you can use allot less resin and make a very solid wood-like block by casting the shavings under pressure.

    Loving this one Nick. I recently made a pen blank with left over sycamore shavings. I think its great way to maximize your return from the wood. Looking forward to seeing what you turn with that blank.

    I'd like to see resin with shavings just 'floating' in it; either just 1 kind or with several kinds floating around. Would look cool as a platter or even a night light.

    I wish you would have done one with all the shaving mixed together. Maybe all mixed up or maybe layer I think that would have been cool

    I wonder if you could make a vase out of the resin blocks cut up and put back together like the wood block vase you made... Idea? 😀

    You should make some pen blanks with the multicolor wood. Also I saw that vase featured on Facebook.
