It took me some time to realize that here in the West, we've completely normalized the ridiculous expectation that customers need to pay twice: one time for the product/service AND another time for the wage of the workers which was supposed to be paid by the owner/company. We get guilted into paying what the bosses are supposed to pay. Just so that the bosses can continue paying their workers next to nothing and putting the burden on customers to pay more + on workers to be stressed out and more vulnerable due to dependency on tipping. It's insanely fk-ed up if you think about it. The no-tipping culture in China makes perfect sense. The government forces companies to pay their workers enough to live.
It's not 'the west' only the US. In Australia and NZ, no tipping is required. Prices are really clear and service is pretty good and genuine even without tips.
Tipping just the tip of an iceberg... The scamming goes on in every aspect of our life, the 99 pricing system, tax not included in the price of merchandise and when you buy lumber, giving dimension vs what you are getting totally different(same for computer hard drive), annual salary vs monthly(to make it feel the number bigger). These are the one I can temporary think of.
In China, if you leave a tip for the wait staff, they will chase you to return it to you as they regard this as either an insult or a form of corruption. The service they provide is given freely and honestly - no extra gratuity need be shown , except by your return business and word of mouth promotion to others as this will ensure the business's continued survival.
In UK, a lot of restaurants are putting 10-20% on the bill calling it service charge, just another name for tips. This is added to the total and then charged 20% Value added Tax VAT. Then some customer put another 10-15% cash on the table for the waiters. That is why eating out can be so very expensive. If you pay by card, it goes to the owner’s account. It is doubtful if the waiters get a fair share of that.
In Canada, some restaurant managers take certain % of the total tip before giving it to employees. If the employees are not happy, many other immigrants are keen to take the job.
You have to supplement my employees salaries so I can get richer! And I will take a little extra off the top as well because I can! - Typical Restaurant Owner
@smash_27 i don't know what youre talking about, in Canada we have a reasonable minimum wage for example $16.55 in Ontario which is a requirement, we are not Americans, however i agree that tipping it getting out of hand.
When I waited tables in college I got over $100 for four hours of work, all cash. That was late 90s. Didn’t care about what the restaurant paid me or not.
Here in Australia, we pay our workers a livable wage. Tipping is not mandatory nor obligatory but totally voluntary. Businesses that add on a surcharge here as a "tip" for its serving employees will find themselves devoid of customers pretty quickly.
Tipping is especially terrible for tourists, because tourists don't know how much to pay. If you pay more, no one will refund it to you; If you pay less, someone will ask you for it.
My brother was chased down by a waitress in Vietnamese restaurant because the food and services were terrible! His friend finally gave her $20.00USD for the argument was getting little bit heat and wasn't worth it, LOL🤣
??? I live in Los Angeles for 12 years , and occasionally I don't TIP for poor service / food and No issue with Waitress / workers chased me down ! u can call the police for harassment ! and I'm also an Asian, are and ur brother is full of racist and a BS !
Vietnamese picked up the bad habits from Americans serving there during the Vietnam War. In China, if you leave a tip, they will chase you down the street to return it to you - not because it is too little or too much but because they view tipping to be an insult.
This is why restaurants in Canada will all close down soon ! Waiters are paid less than minimum wage and rely on tips to make a living. Now with unscrupulous restaurant owners who don't want to give a raise to their kitchen staff are taking their waiter''s tip's to pay their kitchen staff so now it is difficult to find anyone who will work as waiters.
order food online in Canada, I have to care for delivery riders feeling include delivery fee, service fee and 20% tips? what a civilised country. in future trading company drivers would demand delivery fee as well in Canada. and Canada is tariffs china EV cars 100% . is it the right way to do? I prefer China living. how rich are those Canadian riders earning? they should be earning a fortune
Tipping is a way for the companies/owners to run away from their responsibility to pay their workers and instead push that responsibility on the customers. So the customers end up paying twice (and usually for crappy food and service) while the owners make bank. That's unthinkable in China and just wouldn't be tolerated by the people.
Exactly yhe opposite, but Canadians in general are not taught to manage money, in school or at home. These ridiculous excessive charing just puts them further in debt.

100% correct.

Not only China but most other countries also no tipping, maybe unless the customer wants to give happily.

Technically the second payment is optional. Which is what makes this so dumb
Tipping in North America has gone out of control.
They even ask if you want to tip for self-service drink counters!
I have heard that. Automated systems asking for tips. Absolutely criminal!
Many eatery leaving tip box for the chef...wtf
美国的小费文化根本就是资本主义的转移矛盾,明明雇主可以给餐馆服务员更多工资,但是把责任转嫁给了顾客。
Exactly right!
@@albertwu9084 Tipping is pure capitalism. Cost minimalism or efficiency and squeezing or awarding the workers depending. The winner is the owner.
absolutely!
It’s absolutely out of control in Vancouver you need to add 20% tip to all bills with shit service
Me in Murica 20 years ago: tipped 10% and got chased by the waitress complaining because it was too low.
Waitress in China today: What tip?
Accepting tips privately in China is usually against company discipline. May be punished.

In Canada, a $10 bowl of noodles costs more than $15 because we also have to pay tax on it. Totally ludicrous.
Damn... I forgot to mention that part! Yeah, that lovely tax is also a kick in the groin!
It's the Karen culture...
The whole country starting from their politician is a karen
BTW "service charge" doesn't go to the worker, a lot of delivery people get screwed by that
I believe workers should be paid properly and not have to rely on tips to survive

yeah i experienced this too in singapore, no tipping in singapore and china noted
Well said
I don't eat out anymore. I can't afford 13% GST and 20% tips. I don't suffer, you do.
Why tip when getting food "TO GO".
if keep carry on, the whole Canadian food industry will collapse
Yup.

As the capitalism saga goes on, I'm watching from afar, eating my favourable snacks peanuts, sunflower seeds, sipping tea
Very wise of you!
Capitalism is dying, feudalism is making a come back with a vengeance !

If I don't want to tip because restaurant owner doesnt want to pay employees and I don't buy food, he loses more money. Pay your employees!

I usually tip 10% of the bill. If the servers feel that's not enough, I will tell them to get another job.
'Mandatory tip' is a contradiction in terms.

Tips supposedly a bonus not a life or death situation
even if they being replace with robots they will still ask for tips 😂😂😂
Capitalism gone wild sadly

I certainly wouldn't and I refuse to order delivery due to the essesive costs as well. A whole new round of homelessness on the way.
Unbridled capitalism collapsing on itself !😅🤣
@@tkh2944 Feudalism is making a come back ...notice all the homeless people and tent cities around ?

I think they have a table/service fee tho, but I don't know the details tbh
