The live version of this song is even better. Meet the best bands of India, Thaikkudam Bridge, Agam is another band with golden songs like "Mist of Capricorn" and the "Rangpuravihara"... get ready for your brains to blow off.
Culture where Kantara is shown and this song that shows Theyyam both are continuous cultures. Only difference is one lies in northern Kerala and the other part in Karnataka side of south Karnataka. So basically it’s a continuous culture both based on native gods like Gulikan. In Kerala side the region is called Malabar and in Karnataka side it’s Tulunadu.
Bith kaanthara n navarasa the them used in the video are same.. 'Theyyam' based music video.. n also culture of both area (malabar n manglore-kaanthara)are almst same
As per the band, the last bit in the video was Lord Krishna, come to take the soul of the father with him - you can see the blue skin and yellow dress if it wasn't hidden by the other videos at the end! Regarding the music, TB is a multi genre band, so they have carnatic classical singers, hindustani singers, western stlye singers, a violinist inclined to melancholy melodies (lol), and other rmusicians who have a wide variety of rock/folk/metal etc in their preferred styles. So this kind of a song that fuses carnatic singing onto a heavy rock structure, with the violin at the start, and the guitar in the middle bit etc, seems completely natural for them. The Kantara song followed a very similar structure - in fact, apparently this song was the 'guide' version for the Kantara music director - they literally told him to make something similar to this one, as per what the Kantara music director told the TB band members who contacted him. The issue was that a bunch of people believed TB participated in the Kantara music, and thus contacted TB because the music was so similar - the issue would have been resolved if the Kantara producers just gave credit to TB as part of the end credits of the movie for inspiring the song. Otherwise it just comes to look like another story of a big production house stepping on a relatively small (at the time) homegrown band for profit. Like, the band members were open about how they spent a lot of money on the video coz they believed in it so much, and they had to go slow with the release of albums and songs coz they had to slowly gather money for their music. I personally also believe this music video pretty much was the base for the entire premise of the Kantara movie. At the time Navarasam came out, no-one was really relaying the idea of traditional arts and traditions dying out, but in a medium of the newer world of rock and music videos, etc - it was such a breath of fresh air. The people who were into TB at the time were not unaware of the amazing and groundbreaking nature of it. ARR even shouted out the band, as I think did Kamal Hassan, the Tamil actor. TB weren't super mainstream, but they are all musicians working in the industry (the violinist is the music director of the Tamil movie '96', for e.g.), so people knew them and their music! I think the Kantara folks saw the potential of the story in the video, re-imagined it in a way it would work as a movie, with actors, and literally recreated the plot and made millions and got accolades. It's a shame they didn't credit TB even for the music, much less any ideas inspiring the movie plot. The fact that you got the concept of Navarasam, and the grander idea of what TB intended to show, is amazing - many people see the story as depicted, as a kid who stands out being bullied into extinction, and leave it like that, so it was nice to see you guys understanding. :) Thank you for your reaction. TB's newest album 'Namah' has them featuring musicians they look up to in each of them. They just released a behind the scenes of how the song got made of one of my fav tracks 'Nee', ft sitarist Niladri Kumar. Apart from 'Nee', they have a video of 'Kalliyankatt Neeli'. I also recommend 'One', it's a cool video showing Kerala. I love almost every track from Namah, 'Kanne ' - a tour video of this one exists, 'Saawariya', 'Jeele Jeebhar' and 'Thekkini' (this one is a full instrumental song, inspired from the music and the movie 'Manichitratazhu', which is the original, National aware winning movie that got remade into a bunch of languages - Bhool Bhulaiya in hindi. TB actually got together as a group of friends jamming and playing together as a promo for the newly launched Kappa TV channel at the time, and they went viral for their performance of 'Nostalgia' and 'Fish Rock'. They sang a bunch of songs in their two appearances, some of which are covers and medleys, etc. I love 'Nostalgia 2' as well, and many of their covers! I can go on and on but 'I'll stop my essay here lol.
This is a popular band and you should checkout their songs as well. But this is not the first band. In fact Malayalam had the first band in India. Another popular band is currently is Agham.
