Citadels on carriers are allowed under certain circumstances. In a French battleship you have to send a proper bottle of wine and some questionable cheese to Charles de Gaulle's grave. I want to know how he got so many citadels. I shoot at broadside cruisers a tier lower and watch all my AP either overpen or ricochet when they hit right in the centre!
@Ushio01 it's all luck based on the shot it seems, sometimes I delete cruisers from across the map with an absolutely beautiful shot. Sometimes I can't even citadel them from 4 kilometers away
17:55 Scharnhorst was in turn-out. This caused his ship to list to starboard slightly, yet it was enough to mitigate some of that turtleback angle so that Dunkerque could smash right through it
Look again, it was turning in, not out. Listing to starboard indeed happens, but that doesn't mitigate the turtleback angle, it instead makes it even more angled. But what might have happened is that the listing was enough that the turtleback actually rose above the waterline, and so a shell managed to get under the turtleback and into the citadel.
@wombat4191 you're absolutely right. He is turning in and it's not the turtleback slope angle getting mitigated, it's flat bulkhead being raised and exposed. Thank you for correcting me
@MihaelTurina yeah, when you angle or turn, which cause your ship to tilt, all the proximity changes are taken into account. I'm not sure about this one, but I think even the slight 'jumps' of your ship on waves are taken into account (as long as you don't have some mods that make water extremely wavy to make your ship bounce a lot more)
Another reason for the French Quad guns wonky dispersion was the shells themselves. The French included a space in the shells for a poison gas canister, which is fine, until you shoot the shell without said canister. The shells thus now had an empty space where all the pressure went to that empty space, causing shells to shatter and go everywhere but not where it was aimed. It's why after the Richelieu, Dunkerque's sister, went to the US for repairs the US made special shells for the guns (as the US didn't make that caliber of guns in service) that actually worked perfectly fine.
Richelieu was not sister to the Dunkerque, that was Strasbourg. Richelieu was Jean Bart's sister, and armed with 15" guns as a full battleship instead of a battlecruiser.

Post-war in 1948 delay coils were fitted to the two center gun on Richelieu to curb shell interference by staggering the firing timing by a fraction of second when firing a full salvo at once. Presumably had fate turned out differently for France in general or the Dunkerques they'd been fixed in the end anyway. To clarify, the problem is the guns are mounted too closely together in pairs in a shared cradle rather than quads in general neccesarily having a problem. Italians experienced similar problems with their twin 6-inch guns that also were mounted too closely together
I notice citadels on german BBs when shells bounce off the turrets and plunge into the deck. So the front turret and rear turret area is the sweet spot.
I think german BBs also have an exposed ammo storage under their furthest forward turret. I've detonated a Bismark with BB fire when a couple of shells hit underneath the A turret just in front of the turtleback
Actually Jingles, Coronel Bolognesi is the Fiji class light cruiser HMS Ceylon. My father served on her during the Korean war. I was quite surprised she turned up in WoW but disappointed she isn't flying her original flag.
You can hit citadels on underwater turtle back if the ship is making a hard turn. The ship lists (rolls) enough for the underwater and not turtle backed portion to rise out of the water.
17:52 "This is France confidence level (YES YES YES YES)" 6:43 "This is what actually happen (getting blasted by the british while chasing another frenchman around the island)"
I was so surprised to hear about the effects of each fired shell having an impact on the other shells fired at the same time from the same turret. I imagine that the engineers and ship designers must have to keep this in mind and then calculate, based on the caliber, the gaps between the barrels in the same turret to keep this interaction from happening. Just fascinating!
The reason they write the name as "Dunkerque" is because it's a Flemish, old Dutch, name (Duinkerke = Dune church) in which the -e isn't silent, -que is how you'd write that in French.

It would be a pretty neat mechanic to be able to ripple-fire main guns by gun TUBE and not TURRET. You could have it be on a toggle. Being able to time it so that by the time your last gun fired the first was reloaded would be kind of cool. Being able to have a constant stream of shells in the air like you're an Atlanta...but they 16 inch would be a pretty interesting mechanic.
I get the feeling that someday after repeated absues, the French language is going to corporealize and smother our favorite gnome with a brie-stuffed pillow...
Scharnhorst is a battleCRUISER, not a battleship. Therefore, it is possible to citadel it. German BB's can be citadeled too, I've done it, but it is usually from plunging fire, not straight across fire.
But it is and was a Battleship, even in history my dude. The Germans referred to the class as Battleships (and to be fair it did stem from a Battlecruiser idea that's fair) and the British after the war seconded the classification.
@@battleship6177 "The Scharnhorst is generally considered a battlecruiser rather than a battleship, although the classification can vary depending on the source, as it was designed with a focus on speed and firepower, characteristics more closely associated with a battlecruiser, even though it was classified as a battleship by the German Navy;." It was NOT a battleship. BB's sacrafice speed for better armor, BC's sacrifice better armor for speed and typically have lighter guns. They're designed to hunt down cruisers whereas BB's are designed more along the 'ship of the line' idea and are meant to go against other BB's. Scharn and Genisenau were both BC's.
@Robdog1-w1f 1. What's the source you're using for the quoted text? 2. Considering your British definition of a Battlecruiser, this does not fit the Scharnhorst class, especially with their overall 320mm belt with it being 350mm in some places. A Battlecruiser also has a contemporary Battleship design, of which the Scharnhorst has none. The 11in guns were used as a compromise since they were readily available and the 15in guns Hitler wanted would take years till fully developed, so better to have them out ASAP for the political potential Hitler wanted and were ordered to be swapped out at the best possible time. With the want to upgun to 15in guns the ships were designed to house 15in guns, therefore the 11in guns for the Scharnhorsts had to be modified from the previous Deutschland class 11in guns to fit into the 15in barbette. It was also seen as adequate for the intended purpose of the ships. On the note of the intended purpose, the Bismarcks were to have the same purpose as the Scharnhorsts by being commerce raiders and avoid fighting with British capital ships, but nobody calls the Bismarcks battlecruisers even tho they have thinner armour than the Scharnhorst class. Now to the claim of them being generally referred to as Battlecruisers, this has been of high contention for many years now so no it is not generally accepted.
The Dunkerque is a good ship. Always was. It was my most played ship for a good 2 years. Very glad I ignored the reviews of Jingles and iChase at the time, who wrote it off as a disappointment. And it was cheap too!
Wasn't that mainly the Japanese that did that? If I remember correctly the Americans shot their guns all at the same time, wasn't changed to a "ripple fire" until the 1980s
How interesting it would be to know who got the Andy McNab reference and how many get it from the book and not the movie. Think I read it in my early 20s. A tip of the hat, Sir.
Could someone explain to me how in this game plunging fire that is coming in almost vertically, lengthwise to the target, can overpenetrate on a regular basis? I mean sideways, okay, it went through the ship altogether. But lengthwise while falling down? Does it go in the top and out the bottom?
it does, but at the same time should have a high flood-trigger chance, especially for the larger calibers, nice hole in the underwater part of the hull kind of isn't an easy fix, have to seal the section off until dry-docking for repairs can be done or a patch-panel can be placed
That's actually pretty interesting he lined it up like that, intentional or not. I put the German flag there just to troll my buddies (this battle was a few months back).

I remember back when I got mine on sale, I was telling a pal in game I got Dunkerque for nine bucks, she replied "Don't you mean Dunkirk?" as though I was stupid and didn't know how to spell.
Alternate title: "Get dunked on."
I knew I should have taken that left turn at Dunkerque.
@15:41 Dunkerque B has a light camo and the regular looks like the B model with the dark scheme
Battleship 61 is driving a Dunkerque 61B and the enemy Dunkerque is the tech tree flavour.🙂
Low-tier CV's are made of citadels. It is the high tier with armored decks that you thinking of.
@@battleship6177 "The Scharnhorst is generally considered a battlecruiser rather than a battleship, although the classification can vary depending on the source, as it was designed with a focus on speed and firepower, characteristics more closely associated with a battlecruiser, even though it was classified as a battleship by the German Navy;."
It was NOT a battleship.
@Robdog1-w1f
Finally! A battle that isn't tier 10 and full of bizarre ships. A tier 7 match is a welcomed change. Even if it stars a dirty French ship. lol
The Dunkerque is a good ship. Always was. It was my most played ship for a good 2 years. Very glad I ignored the reviews of Jingles and iChase at the time, who wrote it off as a disappointment. And it was cheap too!
Its an insanely good ship especially in a down tier, I absolutely love it.
On more common 3-gun turrets they still don't fire them all at the same time. The middle gun is fired after the two outer guns are fired.
Wasn't that mainly the Japanese that did that? If I remember correctly the Americans shot their guns all at the same time, wasn't changed to a "ripple fire" until the 1980s
Hey, Battleship 61 is back! Nice!
That ship was a running gag. Dunk B in stadard camo. And french ship, flying a german flag🤣
Thank you for noticing my tomfoolery XD
I actually love the dunkerque. Just point your bow towards the enemies and blast away
Nice Bravo two zero Andy Mcnab reference!
Excellent video, thanks!
Hi Jingels, Could you spell and pronounce Wooster (Worcester) for us please ?
Yhea.. that's what I thought
Its wuster, with an "uh" sound, not wooster with an "oo". People in glass houses etc...
Oh them Frenchies are gonna be mad at that one🤣
How interesting it would be to know who got the Andy McNab reference and how many get it from the book and not the movie. Think I read it in my early 20s.
A tip of the hat, Sir.
Credit to him for doing so well in this ship, i get smashed thru the front every time ive tried to play it!
Although it has weak armour, it's an absolute blast to play.
@@battleship6177 There is something enjoyable about having all the guns in the front..;)
I will never not mispronounce this ships name thanks to you.
thanks Jingles
A netto Jean Bart.
Love it much fun.
Another great replay.
This was in the Dunkerque Black, and yes Battleship_61 is the highest damage in the ship.
Good morning Gnome OVerlord. All the best.
Nice, it's the official day of the french-german friendship and here we see a replay of a french battleship boasting both the french and german flags.
That's actually pretty interesting he lined it up like that, intentional or not. I put the German flag there just to troll my buddies (this battle was a few months back).
@@battleship6177 great battle by the way
