Massage Basics: How to give a shoulder/neck rub

  • This one's for everyone: Want to give a good shoulder rub, but don't know what to do with your hands, or where to press? How do massage therapists do this all day without their hands exploding? There are tricks!
As you'll see in the video, the important thing is to keep your hand relatively still while moving your arms and wrists. That will apply the pressure without tiring your thumbs out. Don't just work on the big squishy trapezius muscle, also work down next to the spine, and over into the shoulders. If you try to tapotement (the chopping thing), start gently!
Let me know what you think. If there are any massage therapists in the crowd, check out the rest of my channel for detailed tutorials based on myofascial release!

    0:00 techniques
3:00 start of routine, with-thumbs trapezius sandwich (start in the middle, come out to the sides; broad squeezes)
3:34 scapula (find broad blade of bone and explore with thumbs; wrist originating circular movements)
4:05 thumbless duck-grip shoulder (deltoid) squeezes
    4:19 thumbless duck-grip on trapezius
4:32 client places head on table
4:40 press with thumbs along spine, using body weight for pressure (thumbs straight)
5:10 grope up and down rib cage, scapulae
5:37 more trapezius duck-grips, working up to neck; duck-grip neck
6:00 add pinch squeeze to base of skull
    6:25 tapotement

I would say the combination of a well structed live demonstration, plus explaining what muscles are involved and advice to prevent hand fatigue (Which is by far the most difficult thing) makes this a very good video. I'm glad its the one I clicked.

The first girl I massaged wanted her back and shoulders done. I had no idea what I was doing. My hands were destroyed by the time I was done 😂 but the massage led to a very happy ending, so it was worth the pain lol
She said I did a great job but I knew she was just being nice. There's no possible way anyone's first massage is gonna be good. I spent the next few days at the library reading every single book I could find on massage. I kneaded to get better. See what I just did? I'm clever. ☺️

Duck grip VS claw grip, best advice ever! I love to give both my mom and maternal grandmother (and a few other female family members) back, neck, and shoulder rubs. Relaxes them and gives me a small workout. :) I got a few small tips from my one massage therapist aunt, but I was already doing most of these kinds of techniques. Going to try them on my poor stressed out boyfriend soon. I'm hoping he loves it, too.

After using these techniques on a friends' father, who has had some surgery in his shoulder, which resulted in some severe sharp pain in his shoulders, has helped him so much. I'm not a licensed practitioner for massage therapy (though I am looking into it, family and others that need it at the moment), but what this video provided me, for him, has truly helped him in regards to range of motion for his physical therapy. Thank you for uploading this video.

Nice simple tutorial for us every day persons haha. I also love watching the informational videos, well so far only a couple since I've just found you (and who doesn't love how relaxing those look anyways) so its funny to see the annotation about how your channel is mostly intended for other massage therapists. Totally get that, since you're explaining a lot of muscles and muscle groups, techniques etc, but as someone who isn't one, it's a really great way to know the process, know how they think as they're moving along in different areas, and it almost gives me a bit more insight as to what my body might feel like before and during a massage based on movements used etc.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  4 роки тому +2

Congratulations! I bet you'll kick butt. As someone who also did a lot of prep prior to massage school, my advice is to wrap all the knowledge up and store it away for now, so that you can truly immerse yourself in the learning environment. In other words, try to stifle the part of your brain that wants to say "but Ian said to do it this way!" so that you can mine maximum value from the massage school experience. It's so great, and I wish I could do it all over again. Oh, and feel free to join us on our forum (search "massage sloth clubhouse" on Facebook). Best of luck!

Interesting what you say about using your arms to apply pressure to avoid fatigue in the fingers : That is how pianist (should) apply pressure to the keyboard. Using the flat of the fingers on the key and moving the arm to press down. Using finger pressure exclusively can strain the tendons.
