  • The North American F-100 Super Sabre was a jet fighter aircraft that served with the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1954 to 1971 and with the Air National Guard (ANG) until 1979. As the first of the Century Series collection of USAF jet fighters, it was capable of supersonic speed in level flight, and made extensive use of titanium throughout the aircraft.
The F-100 was originally designed as a higher performance follow-on to the F-86 Sabre air superiority fighter. Adapted as a fighter bomber, the F-100 would be supplanted by the Mach 2 class F-105 Thunderchief for strike missions over North Vietnam. The F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the Air Force's primary close air support jet until replaced by the more efficient subsonic A-7 Corsair II. The F-100 also served in several NATO air forces and with other US allies. In its later life, it was often referred to as "the Hun," a shortened version of "one hundred."

I was an F-100 pilot with the 614th TFS at Phan Rang in 1969-70. Although I went on to fly the F-4 and F-15 among others, none were as satisfying as my time in the Hun.

Also the survivability of this thing was insane… like a P-47 from the previous big war. It could take bullets and even sometimes a SAM and still make it home. It flew fine even when you lost some hydraulics.

The reason I love the Hun so much is because it’s just an airplane that you can brag about flying. It’s like learning to drive a really old, really rough stick-shift pick up truck. It takes quite a bit of getting used to but once you master it’s tendencies and are aware of its issues and it’s difficult landings, you handle it like it’s a tank and it’ll fly how you want it.

i arrived at tuy hoa in may 1970, was a crew chief on F-100s. they started phasing out the F-100 about five months after i got there. they sent me north to danang to finish my tour of duty. tuy hoa was a great base compared to danang.

I was at Bien Hoa in 1967 when we were designated the busiest airport in the world. 65,000 take off/landing. One every 42 seconds for thirty days! I was an armorer (gun plumber) with the 90th. Tac Ftr Sq. It was busy but, we were young.

My Dad flew the Hun with a squadron of the 401st Fighter Wing out of DaNang in 1963 (supposed to have been TDY from England AFB to Taiwan). I've read the complaints about the Hun, but Dad said it was fine if you knew how to fly it (and, i.e., had good piloting skills). He sure had fun with it. Fast and accurate! Fast was good ... get ahead of AAA or get to the target area in a hurry.

It was said if one built a runway long enough, North American Aviation could build an aircraft that would not take off from it. It was intended as a joke. I flew the T-28B and it had plenty of go.

When the USAF had the Vought A-7 Corsair rammed down their throat by McNamara they insisted on making changes and then only to use in country RVN. Engine, fuel cells, flight controls, cannon, avionics and added armor. When used over North Vietnam it had the Lowest Loss Rate of any that flew there.

I was a 462 then, right after the Huns left, but still remember those 4- M39A2's up front. One of my friends is missing part of a finger from having his hand by the rotating cylinder when the charging lanyard was pulled at the Arm end of the runway. Ouch 💥🇺🇸🇺🇸

NAA scored 2 home runs in a row with the oustanding P-51 and F-86. While the Hun was a history maker as the first supersonic fighter and first of the Century Series, it didn't quite rise to the level of its predecessors. It had its share of teething trouble with roll-coupling and metal fatigue. A good base hit, but no home run.

The Thud a total lemon? That depends on how you look at it!
As a dogfighter the Thud was a bear but when speed was needed for weapons delivery and later against SAM supression the Hun couldn't hold a candle to the Thud and it's mighty J-75 engine. Not only that, the Hun couldn't match the 105's weapons carrying capability either!

Does anyone know why the pitot tube is so long on the F-100 and other Century Series/transonic aircraft? Does it have something to do with "getting ahead of the shock wave" from breaking the sound barrier, like keeping it from surging the jet engine or something?
I saw NASA's F-15 with "Quiet Spike" and it got me thinking.

    • @ericbrammer2245

+Vultur Vulturis Actually, missiles such as the Shrike and Maverick were 'in place', and used to give some stand-off position to Weasels by '66. Paveway bombs soon followed, using limited flight control, and guidance by a laser-pod. Still, the 'Weasel' mission was ( and is today ) a "Hunter on-the-hunt, against a ready killer target, so, it's akin to a head-on duel with a loaded gun, or missile, base; may the best, fastest, gun/missile win. So, the guys in F-100's were the first, least armed, and had the restriction of 7 G's turning (or the plane would break apart; hence, F-100's only scored 1 kill in Vietnam, or, ever), so those guys were the ultimate "Bad-Assed" fighter jocks of all time. The odds were NOT in their favor, at any level. And, They Knew It, BUT Flew Anyway!!!
The F-105F, then F-105G took over the 'Weasle' mission, with the Shrike and Harm missles, plus various bombs and Mavericks by '67, and they, despite the 'political' rules-of-warfare that President Johnson dictated, kept up the fight ( kinda hard to fight, when one, or both, hand[s] are tied behind your back, but, that's conservative thinking for you!) and did indeed keep SAM bases out of the fight in bombing Hanoi. The F-4 Phantom took over the role late in it's career (well, by then , most of the 'Thuds' were shot full of holes anyhow), and the F-16 and F-18 both took on Weasel roles in the last few years. I don't think you'll see a 'Weasel' F-22, as it's too expensive to get shot up. Probably the same will be true with F-35's. Then, I guess, wars against foes will be considered in whether our fighters are worth the cost of losing.
Poker, anyone?? I'm "All In" with a SAM site and some AK-47's, so, What's your aircraft worth?? Oh, you FOLDED!

how do you make sure that you have personnel that know how to fight a war?

**The ABCs of Salvation, or how to be right with God, and know you're going to Heaven:
    A-dmit that you're a sinner, and need a Savior.
As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one. Romans 3:10
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
B-elieve that Jesus Christ died paying the penalty for your sins, and rose from the grave.
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures... 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
C-all on the Lord Jesus Christ to save you, and trust only in Him for your salvation.
If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
The moment you "believe," or, put your trust in what Jesus has done for you, God saves you and your eternal destiny in Heaven is assured. You go from spiritual death to eternal life the moment you believe.
Jesus said it this way: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. John 5:24😀
