  • I gave Disintegration a second chance after its disappointing multiplayer beta. Sadly, single player wasn't the redemption I'd hoped it would be. This is not worth your time or money.

      I liked Descent and Forsaken back in the day and it's too bad nobody's tried making anything like that again.....
      ever since 2000 everything is boots on the ground, maybe some third person mecha combat once and awhile and i'm just going action shooter games here, we've finally started to see some aerial and space combat games come back so why not 360 degree combat games??

      Or perhaps have the option to switch between them on the fly. Have the gravbike user serve as an "eye in the sky" for when you need to get a better look at your surroundings (and perhaps to pick off a hard-to-reach target), and the three ground-pounders can be specialised for specific roles.

    • @andrzejsugier
      @andrzejsugier 4 роки тому +11

      But it IS a very useful metric. For ACTION GAMES. And the only difference a genre make is how long the loop is. Every game is a repeating series of fun interactions, whether it's making meaningful strategic decision and seeing it's consequence, choosing dialogue options to influence a story or making a tight turn in a high speed race. The quote is not about repetition, but about making the most basic interactions between the player and the game fun. Not necessary exciting - fun.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 4 роки тому +3

      @@andrzejsugier The problem with quotes is that they make people think that the world is simple to understand when in reality it is complex and requires time to truly master.
      What you did there is the clever thing, to interpret the quote in a way that gives meaning to it. Too many people just see words that you can throw around to explain the world without having any kind of original thought.
      I could even go so far as to disagree with you because I know action games that are first person shooters with the same kind of promise like a game series like Halo that take far more time to generate emotions and let people breath, something that according to this quote would be simply boring.
      Why? Because I just interpreted the quote and think that my interpretation is absolute, just like you will probably argue that your own explanation is the better one.
      As I just demonstrated, people should take quotes less serious because if anyone gives it just a little bit of effort, they can twist the few symbols that make up the legendary one liners in any way they want and if people think too little about quotes, they will find themselves trying to see the world through a narrow tunnel instead of looking at it from the mountain of their own capable reflection.

    • @Nu11nV0iD9
      @Nu11nV0iD9 4 роки тому +3

      If you want you can mechanically break down any halfway decent game outside of a literal "30 seconds of fun" but that's not the point of the quote. Is it an overused explanation? Yea but that doesn't really mean it's unwarranted. Anything that's popular falls into a vague and easy to counter argue generalization due to a simplification of its intended message. Same thing applies to like 99.9% of all philosophy quotes.

    I have to say it would really really suck to work toward a product for 3 years or so and then as it’s all put together you get this dread about the quality and then see it release and be kinda shit. That’s gotta be difficult. Games take a long time now to produce so a developer may only get a handful of projects to work on in his career. I love Devs even if I butt heads with them regarding certain games and their production (last of us 2...).

      That's true, an incredibly bitter but real aspect of games' development. Not only do they demand a truckload of resources and time investment, but the scope and creative vision demands artistic excellence as well. This multifaceted requisite is more draining than any conventional job I can think of for the most part. Its absolutely bonkers, really. No wonder so, so many individuals employed in the industry end up suffering a complete and utter mental breakdown for egregious spans of time.
      Its unfortunate and heart wrenching to witness people belittle the extensive demands that need to be met by developers - when they respond with "oh, every job's demanding - game devs are no exception". I don't believe most 9-5 corporate jobs require the artistic brilliance and passion necessary to produce something not only worth a large audience's hours long entertainment needs - but something that can go above and beyond and actually be remembered as a significant enough product in an ever expanding industry.

    Damn, that’s too bad. I think that the game can be tweaked though. More enemies with lower health, and maybe boost the weapon dps to make it not feel like a reload simulator. I also think that selecting specific units would be doable.

    • @kallmannkallmann

      If they add more enemies they will probably have stability issues. Making party members more like mass effect party members is prob a good idea. Aka party members being totally useless so player need to be more powerful and take care of stuff. On selecting specific units then they may need to introduce new systems to handle that and probably rebalance alot of stuff. Aka not only minor tweaks.

    I could have guessed the results of the game from the opening of your video. I was a game dev for 12 years. I finally got out because... .Every studio tells you "they won't cruch" "they try hard not to crunch" "they are different" Every studio lies, or .... well to be honest, they make Disintegration.
    The fact is studios don't crunch because they want to. It's because they want to make a game that takes 4 years of development but only have 3.5 years. It's because they don't scope a game properly and don't cut anything. It's because they don't magically balance. Because they have deadlines.
    I've heard "We won't crunch from over 10-20 studios and they all do. I worked at 5 different studios, some try very hard not to crunch, some are on yearly titles and crunch 3 months of year and then say "we'll do better" But the fact is... this is the result of not crunch, The money runs out, you have to ship the game, the hub world isn't done, you didn't balance the game .... yeah.
    I think a studio could "not crunch" but they need to near infinite amounts of money, and time. This isn't the way, and the small start up is always going to be a problem for the "We won't crunch" because... until you have a massive revenue stream you have to crunch.
    The problem with the video game industry is once you have the revenue stream, you over promise rather than making better promises. I don't blame the start ups for crunching, but studios like Rockstar are far worse.
    Oh and Rockstar blatantly told me "We'll over work you" in the interview. They are proud of their 50 hour weeks.... and that's 50 hours outside of crunching.

    Sadly, it looks like a solid idea that is suffering from poor/inexperienced managers. Having 20 years of of experience means nothing if you’ve done the exact same thing the whole time. By that I mean if you’ve been a character artist for 20 years, does that make you a qualified game developer? Probably not. It’s sad.
    This looks like X-Com and Halo but with very badly managed development. It’s a shame.

    I think what would have made this concept work better, would have been just not giving your hover vehicle weapons. Instead go all in on the support role, then take a que from the optional side missions from Black Ops 2. Have the bird eye rts veiw but allow players to jump into direct command of a troup. This would fix that sense of missing the feel of satisfying combat. Sure some people will stick with being a controlled unit but balanced right around the AI not being ordered by you in the bird's eye view being far less effective could still push people to use the rts mechanics

Also, in my experience, the higher paying the job, the more "crunch" was required. It goes with the territory.

    What always struck me about seeing gameplay from this game is just how slow it looked. You are on a futuristic hover bike and you can somehow only move at a snail’s pace? It’s a bizarre choice and I assume it was made because it would be hard to command troops while zipping around the map, but I feel like they should have focused more on one concept or the other. As it stands the game feels like it’s being pulled in two direction and as a result can’t really give enough in either camp.

    I think a quick fix (maybe) for them would have been to drastically increase the number of enemies while giving the player's weapons more power and destructiveness. This would still make utilizing your team imperative as there are too many for you to take alone, but you still feel like a badass when you're raining fire and bullet hail onto the enemies as they fall under your assault.

    I remember playing the beta(multiplayer), it was a lot of fun once I understood the map, there are a bunch of short-cuts that shorten map travel times, you can also flank with your units and send them to a different map location while you scout a different one. Once you find an enemy you either snipe them if you can or wait for your units to come back so that you can take them on easily, while you are waiting you can also destroy the enemies units, the one v one seemed fun too.

    They should have made it primarily an RTS with good micromanaging and fun combat. Your enemy is swarms of bad guys. Your troops killing bad guys gets you the salvage, which just drop off said enemies. Then after a certain amount of salvage you get an OP flying mech that you get to control and just wreck everything until you take too much dmg or run out of power. That’s way it’s primarily an RTS that can earn you a broken-in-your-favor FPS experience.

    I feel like this would have been good as a horde shooter where you can get your people on the ground to do stuff or cover lanes of fire, while you use your (hopefully more capable) weapons to support them. A game that does this better is Strain Tactics, where you have tactical combat with commanding a squad on the ground but you can also fire ordnance from your gunship (I.e. the top-down camera).

    I think this flying commander concept could be worked a lot better in a different context. Maybe an attack helicopter pilot commanding several platoons in the Vietnam war? A proper helicopter with the capacity to deal damage but pressing into zones with just too many enemies to tank through. You'd need to direct soldiers and support them. You can't just say "forward" and forget them or fly off and flying-Rambo the entire war yourself.

    Feels like they made the single player campaign with the multiplayer balancing issues. You don't need much AI in multiplayer, you need a proper and fair time to kill in multiplayer, you put rather claustrophobic walls to prevent exploits, and then you focus on the internet optimization next to graphic before fixing gameplay loop.
