Oh my. I haven't seen that one in a long time. I remember my grandfather had a copy of that one. He had it on it's shelf, and I would look at when I was over at his house as a kid. I had forgotten about it.
@@SavageFlies I do have an older book that I have had for years by Eric Leiser called Complete Book of Fly Tying. I think it's from like 1977 or. There abouts. I like it because it has old school drawing diagrams on the basic how to patterns. Being a cartoonist in a former life, the hand drawings are really top notch. It's probably somewhat in violation of copyright law, but I've made copies of some of the pictures when I do a crash course fly tying course as a state youth fishing instructor.
Thanks Steve! I certainly agree it's a useful book, not only for beginners but for any tier out there. And if I lost my copy, I'd look all over until I got my hands on another one. :-)
@@SavageFlies I have another one of his titled, Essential Trout Flies. Published in 2000: another great book not only for beginners but I still reference it.
Steve Best -Oh yeah, that is a great one! I reviewed it on here not too long ago. And check out his most recent called “Wet Flies” which is a fishing AND tying book. Also great!
Thanks for another interesting video. I have never seen this book anywhere in NZ but it looks like a worthwhile addition to my fly tying collection. I will look on Amazon but my last order for a $20 item from America ended up costing $100 by the time I received it and that was over the top. "Bugs"
Holy cow! I know New Zealand is an island but I wouldn't think it would cost that much to ship something down there. You'd they would have some distribution centers in Australia. But I guess it depends on what you order. Thanks for watching the channel my friend. :-) Cheers. -Matt
Thanks Marshall! I really appreciate you watching. The channel is still plugging along and growing, albeit slowly at times, but I'm looking forward to being able to partner and help promote Midcurrent someday as well. You all do great things for the community and I'd love to support however possible!
That's kind of how I found a couple of the old Tom Rosenbauer Orvis books from years ago. Reading them now that I know a little bit more of what I'm doing, I'm getting more out of them. One of the most useful things about this Hughes book is being able to get a clear picture of proportions. Of course, when tying a new pattern the first place I look is online. But when that fails, sometimes these old books have just what you need. :-)
Thanks Thomas! I haven't forgotten the picture of a fly shadowbox I promised you. I just got back in town but will send you an email later this afternoon.
@@thomaswalls123 No, I haven't really thought about it, but that's a pretty good idea. That might be something to put on the planning schedule for early next year!
I have a couple of books by Hughes - one on wet flies & another on hatches. He is a very knowledgeable writer & very good at explaining how & why to do things. I haven’t seen this book , but I would expect it to be good. #BUGS
Good Morning Sir Matt, sounds like a really interesting recipe manual, maybe one day they(whoever it might be) will publish a new fly book with freestyle flies. looking forward to the challenge of the 2 fly commitment. Thank you for taking the time to do all you do. I know it a lot. I appreciate you Sir Matt. #bugs
Pretty cool all around Matt!! I like that your channel is diversing into book reviews without stepping out of your niche! Keep up the good job! Almost time to celebrate! When are you predicting to hit 1K? I need about 15 days if the current trend keeps going on.
Thanks Otto! I was originally thinking it might take until mid-December to get the 1k, but maybe early December now. With your 300+ a month, you'll probably get there before me! Especially if you keep putting out videos like this morning's. That was a great one! I'm just hoping that I can get some momentum after that and go strong into 2021. :-)
Hey Matt I’m a late comer to your channel. So today I saw your review of Dave Hughes book. I live in Florida so I’m interested in salt water patterns also bass bug patterns. Although I love tying all kind of flies. My question is are you in the future going to be tying those kind of patterns. Thanks for the great work.
Richard- it's never too late to join the tying party! And yes, I'm going to be mixing in several warm water series next year. Probably start with some bass bugs, maybe some bluegill flies, even carp flies. And eventually (maybe spring to summer) start mixing in some saltwater. Thanks for the note and welcome to the channel! Cheers. -Matt
I haven't counted in a while, but between my bookshelves here and my bench up at the farm, probably getting close to a hundred or so. Okay, now you got me curious. I just counted the ones on my three shelves right next to my computer. 75 books, but a few are duplicate copies that I'll be giving out over the next few months. :-)
Matt, do you have this book: if not it is a really great book and has some variants of flies I don't see in other books. The color plates of all the flies are in the middle of the book; the pages have the names of the flies and the recipe listed. Collins: Illustrated Dictionary of Trout Flies by John Roberts ( Amazon may have this book ) Thanks for a great video. Jim
Thanks for the comments everybody. Congratulations to Brian McDonald of Pennsylvania. The book will be mailed out in the morning!
Have this book in my collection its a good one!
Agree! I do wonder how many folks already have this one. It looks like it was a pretty big seller several years ago...
Looks like a great book to put on my list of to have books. Especially for Trout flies. Thank you for the great review.
Have it. I loved this book to get back into fly tying after many many years off. Wonderful beginners book for sure.
I figured you might Clyde. :-) And yep, Dave Hughes is up there with Mike Valla (and Charlie Craven and Pat Dorsey) as some of my favorite authors.
I just watched your review as I held this book in my hands. I completely forgot about the number of steelhead and salmon flies. Excellent book.
Thanks Tom! I appreciate the feedback. I still love the book myself. :-)
I use the book routinely. Agree with your assessment. Thanks, Ron
Thanks Ron- appreciate your note (and support) my friend! Cheers. -Matt
Great review. I have this book as well as the Essential Trout Flies. They are great. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy your fly tying and reviews.
Agree with that Rick. Thanks for watching my friend!
As always, your videos are very informative. Thanks for taking the time to post them. BZ

I'll bet those are good memories Ryan. I don't have anything like that other than spin fishing with my dad. Those are my good memories. :-)

Very true! Thanks for watching. :-)
These older fly tying books are amazing. #BUGS
I totally agree! There are lots of hidden treasures in these books. :-)
Good review Matt!
Thanks Sarge!
it’s a great book, learnt how to tie from this book. lost it at som point and recently bought a new copy.
