Sums up very well how conflicted and troubled Dr Weir was. He worked on the Event Horizon project for so many years nearly to the level of obsession. And when his wife committed suicide, Weir became emotionally traumatized and troubled, causing his reputation to decline. It all explains perfectly why he became so easily possessed towards the end of the film.
I have theory. I think the ship called out to him once it reappeared in our dimension, which is why he had those dreams about his dead wife even before the arrival at Neptune.
Yeah, I was impressed Weir was somehow 'possessed' or magically drawn towards the event Horizon, this footage explaining his dream about interstellar travel explains a lot.
This is one of the scenes deleted from the original 130 minutes rough cut; -The meeting scene between Weir and some people in charge of the mission where they talk about Event Horizon (dialogue from this deleted scene was included in theatrical trailer). Other scenes cut from the original version are; -More back story for Cooper and Justin (including much stronger explanation for why Justin enters the black hole). It was explained that greatest fear of Cooper was losing someone close to him which is represented in the film by the unfortunate accident that claims Justin. -Deleted love back story between Starck and Miller. -More scenes explaining what exactly gateway to hell/black hole is. -Longer version of the scene where Peters hallucinates her son with his legs all mangled with maggots all over them. -After Justin almost died and is inside the water tank, Weir has hallucination where Justin turns into his wife Claire who comes out and looks at him; this scene was included in first two test screening versions of the movie but it didn't made it into the final cut. -Scene where Weir remembers his wife Claire committing suicide was also longer and bloodier. I'll mention the other scenes in the two other deleted scenes from the original version. It would be great to see the director's cut in its entirety.
Good idea. Shout! Factory could at least assemble the director's cut and release it as a special collector's edition, like they did with Exorcist 3 and Nightbreed.
At first hearing of this scene I wasn’t bummed about its removal, because superficially its irrelevant. But it completely introduces Weirr’s character and backstory; his detrimental history after Event Horizon isn’t touched on at all in the original release. It also introduces the full communication without any editing, as it should be at the beginning.
Haven't yet had the privilege to see the entire film, but I've watched a number of UA-cam videos about it. It seems to me this scene should totally have been kept in.
Even if they find the extended cut of the ship's log, there is no way that I'm going to allow myself to see it. Those were the scariest ten seconds I've ever come across in cinema, and this was back in 1997. Bye!
they need to re-realease a bluray from the vhs tape they found. the producer has it in his bloody vault. it truly is one the best scifi horror movies worth seeing alongside Alien and The Thing
I'm afraid the VHS tape turned out no good, or so I've read. Unfortunately, it seems the director's cut is probably lost forever. But, you never know, maybe a copy of the original negative might resurface someday...
I call bullsh*t on this producer having a VHS tape of the footage. Why the hell would there be a single VHS tape out there with the original cut of Event Horizon when it was never released in any official (or even semi-official) capacity? A VHS tape? Makes no sense...
Jack Survana I agree with Brendan. It doesn’t make sense that everything is on film while in editing process and then randomly they convert a directors cut into a VHS tape? And then go back and do more editing on film reels? Just makes zero sense and extremely unlikely
The Event Horizon was created for one reason, to go faster than light... without that we can never reach new stars, we can never colonise new planets, mankind's evolution will end here. Now, seven years ago we didn't just lose a ship and a crew... *WE LOST THE DREAM.*
The problem here was not to give away too much too early, but an edited version of this scene at the start of the movie would have given clarity to Dr. Weir's obsessive desire to join the salvage expedition, as well as his actions during the mission.
It's interesting how Sam Neil is able to portray that his character isn't quite "good", or all there mentally, with just this one scene. There's just something about his mannerisms that could be passed off if you're not aware of how he is later on; his sibilant, quiet voice, the way he didn't seem fazed about the situation and was instead fascinated, his unwavering obsession with the ship. When he talks about humanity's evolution, there's a slight unhinged tone that suggests he is unconsciously talking about something other than the ability to traverse space. Finally, the fate of the crew is almost an afterthought for him. The colour coding is also done quite well, with him in full black as opposed to the two officers, who are clothed in more stereotypically benign colours.
The gravity drive in this film works differently. According to dialogue, the drive would create an artificial black hole to bridge two points in space to significantly reduce journey time. Although the ship's drive successfully opened a gateway in space-time, it actually led outside the known universe and into another dimension, described as "pure chaos, pure evil" or "Hell".
It makes sense why this was cut: the motivation of Weir isn't entirely necessary to the story (though it IS cool to hear why he was so obsessed with it, for philanthropy). Neither the woman nor the admiral give convincing performances; and the dialogue doesn't always make sense (Weir wouldn't need to explain to his superior officers the purpose of the Event Horizon or why he's necessary for the salvage mission). I still like this scene and am grateful for the upload but I see why it was cut.
i dont know, i found his obsession always quiet obvious. if i recall correctly, his wife commited suicide because he was working so long and working so hard on this ship so she became lonely. so after she was gone.. and after the ship was gone.. he had nothing. the two most important things in his life were gone. so after the ship returns.. it was also like a relief for him, that he wasnt lonly anymore.
For an Event Horizon II one could show exactly what happened to the crew, how the Ship was sent back and who sent the message with the ship. One can conclude that the destruction of the crew was not instantaneous , for it took seven years before it came back, someone photographed the crew in the grip of its own insanity, etc.. Also, one could explain the bodies in the background which are still in those tubes for interstellar travel, I saw two maybe three such tubes with persons in them. Event Horizon III could be about how the calibrations for the ship to arrive at a habitable star system are fixed and a crews’ successfully reaching that system and finding what they find. Event Horizon IV could be about follow on missions both settlement and exploratory type. One then could begin a Series to include a Alien Civilization figuring out how to use the system to send its explorers back both from a good system and bad system. The possibilities are limitless.

Just watched the movie yesterday for the first time and just a few minute back I realised, they cut like 30 minutes of the movie, damn, that 30 minutes mustve been pretty dope! Its a shame movies like this are cut out, really sad. Great movie indeed.
This is really powerful. I've only watched clips of this movie, but from what I've pieced together this is an allegory of Star trek. Weir is intellectually a Roddenberry/ PIcard type. He has the intellectual curiosity and the desire to explore. The crew are all a lot like the Enterprise crew or the SG1 forces. But everything goes as horribly wrong as you can imagine. The ship is a lot like HAL from 2001. There is so much going on here, and despite the really, really disturbing visuals, the other effects, the aesthetics are fantastic. The clips I've seen make me very uncomfortable. I do not like horror movies and I really don't like the gruesome nature of this movie, but I respect how beautiful and well constructed it is. I have such a love/hate relationship to this movie - AND I haven't ever seen the whole thing yet. That's a powerful movie.
Yes and no. Weir is more like the classic mad scientist type... he's always thinking "Can we do this" instead of "Should we do this". He was a workaholic and his wife (who was battling depression) committed suicide. At the beginning of the movie, he's already on the verge of madness. The crew is a rescue-and-salvage team, and as a result of their usual work, are very pragmatic - the opposite of Weir. When things start going bad, their reaction is to destroy the ship and get the heck outta Dodge, which puts them at even more odds with Weir. As for the ship, it's speculated in the movie that the drive took it to a chaotic, evil dimension somewhat like hell. It's never confirmed whether the ship came back "alive" or if it's simply possessed by something evil (probably the latter). Either way, though, it manifests the salvage crew's fears and kills them off one-by-one. Weir cracks about halfway through the movie, gets killed, then comes back as a vessel for whatever's in the ship. I generally DO like horror movies, but this one... this one is actually SCARY. It's a great movie, but I've only watched the whole thing twice.
@@d00mboy13 He wasn't saying it did. You have not understood what he has written and responded with something snarky. He was comparing the adventurous drive to explore into the further reaches of space and the unexplored, "like" Roddenberry's written characters Kirk, Picard. And he is correct on that. But, for Weir, It sank into an unfortunate place because his "drive' became tainted and corrupted by grief and ego. His loss of wife and ship turned that desire into a dark insatiable destructive monster.
Wow. Why in the world did they cut this scene? THIS EXPLAINS DR. WEIR'S FIXATION ON SAVING THE SHIP! One of the reasons I thought this movie was so weak was because of his illogical obsession with staying on the ship with all the weird, sadistic stuff going on. Seriously. People are dying, the ship is whacked. Why does he want to stay on the ship? This finally explains all that, and they cut it out. Brilliant.
He created the ship, so of course he is obsessed with it, which is akin to possession. When he gets to the ship, which is haunted from being sent to the Void, he gets possesed right away and becomes an agent of the ship. Too much exposition ruins the psychological impact. His obsession is already implied, and if explained too much, takes away the mystery, and the horror.
Hopefully someday they'll release the 130 minute original cut. One of the producers supposedly found it on a VHS tape. The quality is reportedly not very good, but honestly I wouldn't even care. I love this movie.
Idk why but I really like this scene especially seeing a USAC Admiral in Uniform. Movie never really went into any details on the Organization or it's higher leadership
unfortunately, it's nowhere available on the internet. However, Paul Anderson did mention during an interview back in July while finishing up "Resident Evil: Retribution", that one of the producers of "Event Horizon" had found the original 130-minute cut of the movie existing on a VHS tape, originally thought to have been long lost. So whether or not he'll re-release the movie in its entirety remains uncertain. But if he does, I might check it out myself.
actually if you want to keep something safe, the best place to put it is in a salt mine, given that it's deep underground and the temperature/humidity are constant.
I just bought the 2 disc special edition recently but the main DVD film is only 92 mins (UK version) compared to 96 mins (US version). I hope that one day technology will be strong enough to put some of this cut film back into the main film again. I dislike the fact that film studios often try to dumb down films by cutting bits out in order to get the more people in to watch them by lowering the age ratings. This clip does give more detail to Dr. Weir so shame they cut it.
I believe I saw the film in the theater and although it was decent I believe that adding a few of the deleted scenes really would have helped it, run-time be damned. This is a prime example of what should have been included. Thanks for the upload.
The main issue with trying to restore much of the cut content (if it were even possible) is that test audiences hated it. I'd be happier with a better second half that doesn't degenerate into fist fights and explosions. More gore would not help this at all.
why the FUCK was this scene cut... this addresses exactly one of the primary things haters of this film always go about on. Seriously this scene would have added so much needed depth to sam neil's character. Hope one day someone can come across the 'alleged' destroyed original footage and we can get a directors cut.
they cut out about 30-minutes worth of extra scenes that originally gave this movie an NC-17 rating. oh, and that orgy video that we saw in the theatrical cut? The original cut had an even longer version of that
You can check the wikipedia side regarding the movie. they stated that they found the 130 min uncut VHS in an archive and paul anderson acquired it to hopefully release it in a few years.... but this version is said to be even more gross... :D
Yeah anyone who can hear that transmission and still insist they want to go check out that ship needs to be kept an eye on. Its funny that the crew of the Lewis and Clark don't get to hear it until they are already too close to turn back........top brass and Weir definetly planned that one.
Looks like the makers have correctly predicted how notebook designs will look in the future - but they completely ignored them getting thinner. That laptop looks exactly like an obese Dell Adamo.
Weirs characer would love that scene, but as the movie itself I am fine they didnt take it in. The greatness also lies in the event of the audience roughly getting thrown into the plot ithout any real information before and I love that
The Enterprise doesn't go faster than light. Warp speed never reaches that fast. The Millennium Falcon on the other hand does, so Han Solo and Chewie are fucked
@holl01 Exactly. While this is a nice deleted scene to watch, including it in the final cut near the beginning would've revealed too much too early like you said. However, I think it would've worked great if it was put in late in the movie as a flashback right before his hallucination when he watches Claire commit suicide, especially with the guy saying "someone sent that message."
I assume this was deleted to be replaced by the exposition scenes with the Lewis&Clark crew, which is understandable, but they lost some insight into Weir's character.
I think dr. Weir was just possessed by his profession. For an engineer, for a man the issue of the design, building and testing is something like to be pregnant and to give birth to a child. A false promise, the Temptation is only based on this desire, the possession was the latter 'Event', the direct result of he's been taken to the Warp and NEARLY killed. "She saved me! - Who? -The Ship!!!" -yes, SHE /his damned child/ have saved him at the cost of Weir's humanity...
I'm not sure what the person below is saying. Anderson had made one full-length film before EH, Mortal Kombat, which was a huge success. The fact is, Paramount dropped the ball on this production from start to over-edited finish.
Because when the movie was shown fully uncut to test audiences, they didnt like it, especially the hell parts segments, so Anderson was forced to cut everything that was too gory and thus resulted in the movie we have today, apparently the original footage is destroyed since they didnt store it properly from what i read, meaning the one VHS tape they found of the fully uncut movie is the only existing copy in this universe and will most likely never be released, since its quality probably degraded so much that its unwatchable.
I get what people are saying about this adding to his character but I think it would have spelled it out too much. takes away from his mystery a little bit. its the kind of info you'd find later in a tape recording if this were a game. (this would make an awesome game)
Yeah, that's what excites me. I like this movie as is, but to be able to see the definitive version sounds pretty tempting. It sounds awesome to gore pervs like me xD.
@starshipdan It's his ship,,I personally wouldn't want to just leave a ship that cost billions of dollars and years to make, leaving this scene out also delayed the hellish audio feed bit until later on, when the mood was right for it. Revealing too much early on would kinda dull the suspense a bit, this scene doesn't fit in with the mysterious nature of the film
I read the report that Paramount did not like Mr. Anderson made too many sloppy movies. It was in the mess. Cost so much money. They have to cut down all those deleted scenes. Its a shame. Some scene are great. Paramount made mistakes. Bummer..I love all those deleted scenes as well.
@starshipdan Seriously? Dr. Weir multiple times explains the importance of the ship. He explains he built it. He explains he spent a lot of time. I'm glad they cut out this Barney Style explanation. The only line in that entire scene that would've given to the movie was "I spent 14 years of research on this ship and 7 years wondering what went wrong." I just saved you 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

He didn't build the ship, he is the ship.
Why did this scene not make the final cut? Sam Neil just NAILS it!
It would explain his determination in taking back the ship. Btw the hour of contact - 03:00 - is taken in culture as the hour of Satan
Don't Ask Don't Hell ---SPACE FORCE 😤 🤫
absolutely loved this movie, still hoping for the complete version to be released
Too bad... No more movie like this anymore...
Hopefully someday they'll release the 130 minute original cut. One of the producers supposedly found it on a VHS tape. The quality is reportedly not very good, but honestly I wouldn't even care. I love this movie.
This scene should have never been removed, except the recording playback.
Excellent movie Hellraiser in Space.
Idk why but I really like this scene especially seeing a USAC Admiral in Uniform. Movie never really went into any details on the Organization or it's higher leadership
sending him along sure boosted their chances
unfortunately, it's nowhere available on the internet.
Hi m8
Any news about that uncut directors cut
they said something about a tv series while ago...
heh to think they find extra deleted scenes of the movie in a salt mine.......in Transylvannia wonder why they hid it there?
actually if you want to keep something safe, the best place to put it is in a salt mine, given that it's deep underground and the temperature/humidity are constant.
Hope one day someone can come across the 'alleged' destroyed original footage and we can get a directors cut.
i feel bad for actors who have there scens cut but they still get paid. i hope
dornravlin
They get paid. Long, long before the film is released. Though if their scene is cut they don’t get mentioned in the end credits
Such an underrated film - they could have left this in though.
They should have kept this scene. I dont understand why it was cut.
Sam Neill is awesome...WE NEED A SEQUEL!
No. A sequel couldnt and shouldnt expand on this movie
THAT'S the scene DAMN! I so hoped to see more BLOOD! :D
they cut out about 30-minutes worth of extra scenes that originally gave this movie an NC-17 rating. oh, and that orgy video that we saw in the theatrical cut? The original cut had an even longer version of that
Why? From the begining we know that Weir design EH. What's more needed to understand his obsesion to stay on his ship...
Habrá hecho un pacto secreto con el diablo y el barco y su tripulación como una ofrenda???
Sam Neill is such a great actor.
This scene would have helped alot when I first saw the movie
You can check the wikipedia side regarding the movie. they stated that they found the 130 min uncut VHS in an archive and paul anderson acquired it to hopefully release it in a few years.... but this version is said to be even more gross... :D
Ah yes, lets go visit the ship that sent audio of demonic screaming to us, nothing amiss here
Yeah anyone who can hear that transmission and still insist they want to go check out that ship needs to be kept an eye on.
He seems so evil and creepy even here. His acting is insane lol
Interesting set design, it resembles the inside of a casket.
Like Max Schreck's office from Batman Returns.
DO YOU SEE?!!!
I'm glad they left it out, it gave too much away
This scene was shown in the itself which I just finished.
I'm not sure what the person below is saying. Anderson had made one full-length film before EH, Mortal Kombat, which was a huge success. The fact is, Paramount dropped the ball on this production from start to over-edited finish.
Put him on the ship Admiral.... and Emily Booth as well!!
We need a prequel !
A prequel directed by Fincher and produced by James Cameron.
Liberate tutemet ex inferis...
Why do they delete scenes like this from amazing films like this?
Why brief him if he is not to go... The scene is unnecessary and as someone already said most of this is covered later when Weir briefs the crew...
They want him, the foremost expert on the EH, to assemble reference material for the salvage team. Deck plans, crew complement, dangers, etc.
Hey, it's the guy who plays JFK in that episode of Red Dwarf.
If this is what happened to ships that travel faster than light, the crew of the Enterprise are fucked!
Bummer..I love all those deleted scenes as well.
most movies get cut down for pacing, and not necessarily because they didn't belong.
These scenes are too few. Anderson said there was cut of at least 35 minutes. Original version was also not fitting "R" and they made it fit.
Why does it sound like everyone in this scene just inhaled a balloon full of helium?
Cutting this sceen was a tragic mistake.
Sam Neil is brilliant
very agreed know ppl oh just this one scene but it was not just this one scene, this was only 2:50mins, they were forced to cut! 40mins + (by the horrible holy wood money ppl)from this film, they cut a epic sci-fi up into pieces think,of a other epic sci-fi star wars and you went and cut 40mins + from the film WTF would that do to the story ?
Inove with event horizont
Are you sure this was deleted? I remember seeing this. Perhaps it was re-shot?
на хДрезках разве этого эпизода нет?
eyes?
Why they delete this scene???
Why? Why did they delete this scene?
i saw the original
stfu
Funny thing 03:00 it's taken as the hour of Satan
They did include this scene
in which version??? the 2006 re release? not the original no
