Used a 966 for years working on a farm down the road. It had a standard rear axle not the sliding adjustable type. Never ran out of power ever. This tractor was endless as far as power goes. The only thing I did not like was the brakes. They are not adequate for any large loads. For the tractor they are barely fine but not with a load. I do agree with you about heavy use. If you are doing allot of back and forth shifting a newer hydro drive would be better. Steady pull is kinda the best scenario for this unit, plowing, disc, heavy wagons etc.
Shoot when you bought that thing it was barely broke in. Im gonna admit im kinda a sucker for a good looking 66 series. If I ever bought a red one it would be either a 1066 black stripe or a 1206. One thing about the older ones, you may ware them down, but if you actually ever manage to kill it, you have accomplished something.
when I started farming on my own 2 years ago at 18 years old all I could afford was a IH460 diesel tractor and a Massey Ferguson 450 hand tie baler with an Owatonna swather... and 7 cows! after a lot of learning and busting my ass I now run 60 cows and run all new Case equipment.
look at northeast tractor in lyons NE they might have some, we got original all iron wheel weight made by IH there once. they might have them but there building burnt down earlier this year so i dont know
As a fellow cow-calf operator, I am really interested in the content of your videos, but MAN your shaky camera makes me nauseated. Hahaha. Keep up the good work and keep the vids coming, but please try to steady your camera a bit. Thanks
Yes my degree was in Ag. A TA is a torgue amplifer. The tractor has high and low range and 4 gears. The TA adds another gear to each so basically it has 16 forward 8 reverse gears. The TA allows you to downshift or upshift on the go with clutching
+cowcamp87 will do i love the international and im glad you're taking care of her too many farmers around me scrap their old tractors when they get worn out
My dad and I own a 966 Hydro and we have a front end loader on it! One hell of a tractor!

first gen is tough. I always wonder if some people inheriting a good start realize how lucky they are. Some sure don't appear to.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!

Thats so true. Even when it is "feeling bad" or 30 below zero it wants to work!

Way to go!!
Just make the grill 3/4 steel square tube paint it chrome and will look good. Did my 986.
I think i can find an original one at a salvage yard yet
👍
I know its been 6 yrs since this was posted but we have a tractor like this but it's stuck on gear. Do you know how to get it to work again?
Sometimes you can manually move the lever on top of the transmission case under the deck
dont run a tree in to your plastic IH grill we did that with our 986 with a loader, it was a miracle we even got it glued back together
I was thouroughly not impressed with the plastic ones they had. Im hoping to find an original in a salvage yard yet
