I am getting into the 280AI cartridge. I am necking down 30.06 once fired brass into 280 Rem and later fire formed to 280AI. So far it is working great.
The neck of the case is the part that holds the bullet. The area you are calling the neck, is actually the "shoulder" of the case. The neck does not change dimensions when fire formed, but the shoulder and case body change to the Ackley dimensions. The standard 280 Remington case has a 17 degree shoulder angle, where the 280 Ackley has a 40 degree shoulder angle. Also. Using a caliper measure both cases on the body of the case at the junction of the shoulder, and you will find the fire formed brass diameter is wider than that of the standard 280 case. Otherwise, nice clean and well presented video!
The best way to fire form 280AI brass is to load the 280 Rem. with a starting load of a powder that's on the quicker burn rate .I use a starting load of H380 and I seat 140 grain bullets to about .020 jam in the lands. That makes the case head stay tight against the bolt face so the case doesn't stretch. When I build one I have the scope mounted so I can get a rough zero.I also do the break in right along with the fire forming.Done properly, brass done like this will actually be a better fit in the chamber than factory 280AI brass.I have one set up for long range steel and open country hunting and the brass rarely needs to be trimmed. The benchrest guys usually put a lot of effort into fire forming to make sure the brass properly fits the chamber. That's why Lapua doesn't make 6PPC brass. They make 220 Russian brass because they know the shooters will want to form the brass into the 6PPC by fire forming it using the method the individual shooter prefers.I form all of mine from 280 Rem. brass because I've found it to be better than factory 280AI brass.I know it's more accurate and it lasts longer.
Glad you made a video about this. I just bought a Kimber 84 Hunter Pro in 280 AI. I had to quit watching it(as I quit watching all when I hear this) when I heard “HornaDAY”. When you call Hornady they say “Thank you for calling HornadEE. How may we help you?” When I’m in a gun shop, show, etc. I usually dismiss myself pretty quickly. It’s been my experience that people who pronounce it like that aren’t all that gun-knowledgeable. Just sayin
I fire form Lapua 30/06 with 14.6g of Bullseye topped off with Cream of wheat, piece of paper towel in the end to seal, perfect case. The neck will be a tad shorter, but the brass is so tough, you will not believe it. I have used Rem and Win 270 brass with neck trimmed to length, also. Accuracy is clover leaf groups with no paper in between the bullets on formed brass. IMR 7828, Fed 210 with 160-168g bullets shoot tiny groups, also the 175g Nosler long range with 2g less powder than the 160ish bullets shoots tiny groups. I hope you are using a bore scope to keep your barrels clean as this cartridge will shoot some tiny groups in a hunting rig way on out there. For a custom gun, the 180g ELDM, properly throated is simply unbelievable in how it kills, with it's .796 BC you will be amazed, to say the least, and I am using a 9T barrel at 500 ft elevation.
I have two 280 ackley Kimber . Even though I have a fair amount of 280 Remington ammo also I usually just buy outrageously priced brass when I can find it and and reload it carefully. I also still use the old Remingtons rifles. Fireforming is a PITA. I had necks crack about 10% of the time doing it. Why the industry doesn’t support the 280 ackley more is a head slapper to me. More hunters need to get on this cartridge. You just get more recoil with the 7mm mags for not very much additional performance.
Why not mount your scope and get it zeroed while you are at it? I know the new loads with fire formed brass will be different, but you will be on paper and darn close!
Thanks for the video. I'm in the process of converting .348 Winchester brass to 11x59r for my French Gras rifle. So I'm looking for great information like you have in your video.
This is interesting, I’ve never reloaded before so I didn’t know any of this, if someone were to show me this without any explanation I would have assumed it would hurt the gun and be potentially dangerous. I had no clue this was a thing
280 AI has way less recoil, which leads to accuracy. That Kimber is feather-light and still has minimal recoil which more than makes up for a couple hundred FPS in my opinion.
@@matthewrichards3570 sure I could see that but I have two 7RM’s a m77 kicks like a mule and the other rifle has a muzzle brake and weights like two pounds more than the m77, that rifle kicks like a 243 win. So it’s really subjective

Do you still get accuracy shooting none AI cartridges in an AI chambered rifle? Is the round concentric in the chamber? Or are you only doing it for fire forming purposes?
OK and THE SHOULDER BEING DIFFERENT IS NOT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE between the 280 and the 280 AI. So much easier and FASTER to load large rifle primes behind 8 grains of bullseye and fill the case to the neck with cream-of-wheat, top it off with a wad of toilet paper. If you ever did this you would see the big advantage in this. Plus your Kimber hunter was from Kimber of Oregon, different company from Kimber USA
Nosler 280 AI brass is expensive and hard to find. Also, the brass doesn't last long either. I was getting about 3-4 firings with Nosler brass and it would be difficult to chamber in my rifle even after FL sizing. I'm pretty sure Hornady makes Nosler 280 AI brass. It's very soft.
The Kimber is another extremely overpriced rifle! Not the neck, but the shoulder and case body is straightened too. The shoulder is moved forward within the 280 Remington Ackley Improved chamber, so you can fire the standard 280 Remington cartridge and extract the fire formed 280 Remington Ackley Improved brass.
I have a 7mm mag and a 280 AI. You stating that a 280 AI shoots as fast as a 7mag is bullshit. Normally the 280 AI is about 100 FPS less than a 7 mag regardless of what you're trying to convey on this video. The 280 AI is more powder efficient, but no way as powerful as a 7 mag pal. And you fire forming cases with no scope is stupid too IMO.
Put your scope on. 280 Remington probably shoots about the same as the 280 Ackley accuracy wise. don't just waste waste 280 Remington ammo just to fire form. That 280 Remington ammo can be used to dial your scope in and actually shoot at stuff. Just burning it up too fire form the brass is kind of stupid.
Why the f**k would you fire form all that 280 brass? Especially if you already have a 280 rem that you could use that brass in. You already spent over a grand on the rifle, just buy a 50 pack of nosler 280ack. brass.

7rem mag can shoot a 150grn at 3200+FPS. I can get a 160grn at 3100 FPS in my rifle. 280 AI is close to the 7RM but no cigar

@@Copenhagen93630 how does less recoil lead to more accuracy?
More recoil over time will make an individual develop a flinch. They’re anticipating the recoil at the time and not focusing as much as on the shot

David Coiner less body taper & shoulder moved ahead a little
Look in to getting a hornady hydroforming dies to save on your barrel
Which muzzle brake did u use? I can only find the kimber adirondack and montana muzzle brakes.
Can’t one sight in while fire forming ? Does using a wad vs using a bullet to fire-form deteriorate the throat ?
yes. no.
It is not the neck that is different, it is the shoulder.
What is the advantage of doing it this way vs. buying 280 AI Nosler brass?

No new barrel break in routine on a precision rifle ??
That's a myth, you don't need to "break in" a rifle barrel
🤔
A wash rag over the barrel soaked with 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water cools the barrel very fast!
