John is actually right. The Zabuza fight impact lesson carries into Boruto. The philosophy of the fight had more of an impact to the story and the main character.

Yeah I think Zabuza and Haku death was way more impactful tbh, Azuma has the advantage because we know him and InoShikaCho for longer but in terms of execution and Impact, Zabuza and Haku was presented betted and informed the ninja way Naruto adopts for the rest of his life
Mark saying shikamaru never showed emotion up to that point is cap. He showed emotion when he was leader for the first time during the Sasuke retrieval and everybody on his squad got messed up.

john was right, who actually cared about asuma? he basically got all of his backstory/character development immediately before his death. zabuza's death was way more impactful since it was the first death naruto experienced, the whole haku/zabuza bit, etc.
idk if there are 5 moments sadder than the haku/zabuza thing, especially when naruto was just like...you really gonna act like you don't care that haku died? basically we got jiraiya's death, maybe when you find out that itachi was basically forced into killing his clan, when you find out rock lee might not be able to be a ninja anymore...gaara's sad-ass backstory, etc.
they really tried to make you care about asuma when you had spent like 300 chapters not caring about him at all. if it had been guy getting killed and lee/neji/tenten crying about it, that would've been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more impactful than asuma dying imo

Naruto didn't understand the love Zabuza had for Haku, he was blind to it all he could see was the monster Zabuza was made to be, but ultimately Zabuza did what he was felt necessary to protect him and Haku even if it meant treating Haku like shit cause showing his love would be a weakness

Honestly, I think the Zabuza/Haku arc is my favorite arc of pre-time skip Naruto. It sets up everything that is going to happen between Naruto and Sauske going forward, it leads to Sakura getting her character development in the Chunin Exam arc, it teaches Naruto that the shinobi stuff truly is not a game, we get to see Nine-Tail Naruto for the first time and really see how dangerous he can be if left unchecked, and the fact that I still could be explaining elements of how this one arc builds damn near the entire foundation of the rest of Naruto and Shippuden should speak for itself. I haven't even talked about the Sharingan and how it completely changes how we view Kakashi as a character.
Asuma dying is sad only because Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji are beloved characters, and it was hard to see them upset. It has its effect on the series, but it's not the same as the effects Zabuza and Haku have on the plot and themes of the series.

I'm with John on this one, we only felt anything for Asuma death because of Shikamaru afterwards. However, that Zabuza scene impacted the main character for the rest of the show. That scene as John mentioned significantly impacted his feelings towards Sasuke and wanting to always be there for him, which he tried doing the entire show. Like John stated, the main character was significantly impacted, by virtue of significance is far more impactful than who Mark even stated is a side character.
Shikamaru’s moment with his dad and him crying is a powerful moment that was directed perfectly. The way they sat there in silence as his dad explained to him the shogi comparison and after , Shikamaru releasing his emotions and crying just hit different.
The Zabuza and Haku moment literally introduced 2 main themes, state of the ninja world and destiny. I was dying in the inside when they were like "how did it impact the show" or "that happens in any anime"
Real talk I forgot about Asuma, but I never forget about Zabuza and Haku
Zabuza/Haku scene is impactful to Naruto finding his ninja way. By no means is it sadder than Asuma's death. Asuma's death impacted Ino-Shika-Cho losing their sensei, Kurenai losing her love and baby's father, Konohamaru losing his uncle, and the entire Leaf Village losing one of the top Jonin. John's argument is valid but it does not win the initial question of which scene was sadder.
The scene with haku and zabuza is much sadder
Zabuza and haku scene was much more sad. Zabuza finally finding his humanity too late. Holding hakus facing hoping he could go to where haku is and the snow giving the illusion of haku crying from the after life. Scene was brilliant. Asumas death scene was overrated

I think that's because he always wanted keep the mask of a Rogue Shinobi, along with keeping a powerful rep as the, *"Demon Of The Most"* his death was indeed impactful to specifically Naruto in showing him the harsh realities and perspectives of the Shinobi world; as well as, shaping him into being a great Shinobi he is today, but if we're talking just sadness. Asuma Sarutobi takes this easily...imho

Nah zabuza scene was both sadder and more impactful. The impact is obvious since it’s the theme for the entire series and naruto’s belief system.
But y’all gotta understand: to see a VILLAIN break down like that was way sadder. I knew shikamaru would let out his feelings eventually. But I didn’t see zabuza crying coming.
Then he fights that entire gang with no arms and swords in his back all to avenge haku. Then they die side by side peacefully.

There's an argument for the Zabuza/Haku scene being sadder/heavier than ASuma's death. It's been a long ass time since most revisited Naruto like that though. The tragedy of Haku and Zabuza dying without ever truly expressing how much they loved each other was heavy as fuck. Zabuza crying - knowing his childhood in the Bloody Mist? C'mon now.

This how I see it. Speaking in terms of actual death scenes themselves Zabuzas was much more sad than Asumas death because Asuma wasn't even really a character to us as watchers or readers, THAT'S BASED ON SOLELY DEATH SCENES ITSELF. going into a wider spectrum so including scenes afterwards involving both deaths then that's when Asumas death becomes very sad because we start to care about him due to the reactions of the rest of the cast such as Shikaku telling Shikamaru to let it out, Kurenai being informed and the funeral. John's point was kinda right to me.

With zabuza and Haku we saw character development and how zabuza the whole show was portrayed as a demon and when Haku died and zabuza killed Gato for him he looked angelic in a way as he died next to Haku. Not to mention the scene with the snow falling, Haku laying there looking peaceful, zabuza looking peaceful, the words Naruto spoke that shook his soul. Asuma just died and they were sad but nothing really happened except when shikamaru cried and let out all his emotion.
I gained real respect for John after this.

Everybody but John need to rewatch the Wave Arc. The entire point of Naruto is setup in that arc because of the "Ninjas are tools to be used" VS "Ninjas are people who endure." philosophies. It's when they present the idea of "What does it mean to be a ninja?" Naruto and Sasuke spend the entire show figuring that out and that's why it ends when Sasuke figures out being a shinobi is "To keep enduring until it comes to be, no matter what".

Zabuza and Haku scene was more sad for sure. Everyone felt sad how he treated Haku and how he just brushed him off. The Naruto activated Talk No Jutsu and it got even sadder. No comparison. Shikamaru and Asuma was sad but no.

Think about how the zabuza scene sets the tone for the whole series. At the time we had only had a glimpse, of how dark and cruel the ninja world would be. It builds the foundation of the the show and presents concepts like, saving your comrades no matter the cost, the cruelty of the ninja world, how even the worst of characters have a spark of humanity in them and how narutos words and actions can change even these kind of charcters. Nine tails, sharingan, Team 7 first real world experience really and the list goes on and on. And in the end when zabazu goes rampage, just with a sword in his mouth, you are like wtf, he really did have feelings for haku. I still get the chills thinking about it.
Also, at the time, so early into the series, this whole arc was ground breaking. I remember people had zabuza very high on their favorite character list for a very long time.
The time of release is also an important factor. At the time the zabuza fight was legendary

It's a good argument with valid points going both ways. I judge it by actions afterwards. It bonded Sasuke and Naruto. Naruto got a bridge named after him. But when Asuma died the chain of events that came after produced "So many legendary moments" I can't even type them all but you guys know them. I get what John is saying about the mental shock of the ninja world but not a better moment than Asuma's death.

Okay going back to the point where John said his biggest point is how it affected Naruto. Literally we never seen Naruto have murderous state of mind. When he came face to face with KaKaZu. We all knew KaKaZu wasn't going to live. He told Kakashi to stand back. Tighten up his headband. Naruto gave him his best and took out like 3 of his hearts. Kakashi finished him off. It was poetic for Shikamaru to kill Hidan.
Another thing too is that with Asuma that was one of their own plus it was more realistic, real life we ain’t fw Haku and Zabuza. Haku and Zabuza were not from the hidden leaf.
