When using a aluminium down conductor and copper earth electrode can we install a separate test clamp and a bimetallic connector? At what height above ground? can one just use the bimetallic connector as a test clamp and leave out the test clamp?

      Hey Francis,
The test clamp should be a bimetallic connector or stainless steel connector with an intermediate plate between aluminium and copper. The point is aluminium and copper should not touch each other as it leads to galvanic corrosion.
When speaking about aluminium and earth rod, aluminium should not be in touch with the soil itself as it leads to its corrosion, therefore we convert aluminium to copper coated bonded conductor or strip converts aluminium to copper coated bonded conductor or strip from the test joint points itself.
Test joint clamps are installed at a height of 1 meter from ground level. Also, it is recommended to have the test joint clamps inside a plastic enclosure. Earth rods can be connected using copper clamps or stainless steel clamps.

Why waste so much money and material and then maintenance cost on roof mesh construction when you can put single $10 or $20 worth metal post into the ground nex to the building which will be at least 1 meter higher than the building? For $100 you could use copper rod which would not require maintenance.

The first step in any Lightning Protection Design is Risk Assessment. Each structure owner takes a call on how much risk they’re willing to take.
All these protection methods and international standards have been made after decades of testing, RnD and failed protection measures where houses have burnt down or equipment was damaged.
In the end, it’s your choice on how much protection you want. Or it’s decided by your national building code.

Roof Mesh Construction is important for a building's protection. A single $10 or $20 metal post cannot ensure the safety of a structure.
Also, a single copper rod cannot safeguard the structure, you will need approximately 4 Copper Rods & 4 Air Terminals.

All this type of vids are cases when you need to sell far more than just a rod of metal.

@@AxisElectrical just started dealing with it in my job, and it's real alright. Feel like I've stepped into another realm, running parallel with my own. Was always there, never appreciated it. Trying to learn more and this short video is a good rundown. Cheers Axis.
