      I think many do not speak for fear of making a mistake. There are so many caveats it is hard to say "do this." I decided it was more useful to try. More information is better!

    Im on the first minute of your vid, my book it’s in exactly same physical shape, old family cook book written in very old language. Since little I had my eye on that book in grandma’s kitchen. It’s best memory of her .I’m chef myself and being skill wyth my hands I’m taking project on. Never did it before, will rechearch whole process. To some degree I prefer do it myself. Don’t want new book ,something with age scars will be great, just cover and loose pages all intact. Vintage book with good scent of the past

    for missing pages for some books its quite simple to get those since you can download these books online
    what I do is I try to find matching paper going through the bookstore reject pile works you can find your sheets by reusing the first and last blank pages so stack up on those then you will have an appropriate aged paper to print on and simply print the missing pages on this paper and sow them back into your book.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 роки тому

      Sometimes that is a great solution! This exact book was not available online so I had to cobble the wording together from a couple of different editions.

  • @philmorton4590
    @philmorton4590 3 роки тому +1

    If you got a new copy of the book, could you remake the missing pages then put it back together? But yeah it look worth saving, great job.

    I have a 5th edition copy of The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang - I'm not entirely sure how old it is but the copywrite says 1909.
    There's an old school library sticker on the inside of the front cover and it seems to have been a prize for something, perhaps a raffle. The date indicates the school either received or gave the book away in 1911.
    It has blue board covers with gold gilting to decorate the covers and page edges. Over time the gilting has tarnished a little.
    Overall the quality of the book is brilliant, no missing pages, the binding is still strong and there seems to be no detachments except for the first and last pages from the board covers - there also seems to be a bit of a wobbly spine situation but nothing that careful handling won't exacerbate.
    I guess what I'm trying to ask is how could I get that old library sticker out of the book without damaging it - it's very well stuck in there.
    Also, do you know any good methods of cleaning gold gilting? I don't want yo damage the pages.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 роки тому

      Hey there,
      It is possible that the book is more valuable with the sticker since it indicates a part of the book's history. The term is provenance. However, if you really want the sticker gone, it is likely attached with a water-based adhesive. I have a course on that saveyourbooks.com/course/8-201-library-pocket-water-based-glue/
      But you could skip the course and just experiment with moisture, patience, and careful scraping.

    It's rather unnerving watching how nervous she was, and when she was using that knife and she said oops my heart went into my throat. She's not exactly gentle but I gather she's not used to doing the videos and so she is nervous. I'm just used to watching baumgartner and he's so calm and collected and precise and I shouldn't expect that from everyone, I love books I have many many old ones that I have no clue what to do with to help them stay in good condition perhaps you could do a video someday of what people can do to preserve a book so it doesn't get worse

My goal is to empower those with limited tools, supplies, and experience to make attempts to save their books with a foundation of knowledge of what is possible and what is at stake.
