The Alfa subs were astonishingly fast, but they did suffer from one big problem: they were *EXTREMELY* noisy because in their quest for speed, they had to sacrifice machinery insulation. That plus the high cost of operating one meant the whole class was pretty much retired by the 1990's.
Thank you for this well-researched and informative video about the Alfa-class submarine. Your hard work and attention to detail are evident in every part of this content. It's impressive how you've managed to make such a complex topic accessible and engaging. Keep up the great work!
bismuth-lead eutectic mix has extremely low melting temperature of 123.5 °C/254.3 °F. and if reactor stops it can be melted with ultra heated steam. or rather can be kept liquid if reactor stops. such reactors can increase or decrease power very rapidly compared to water cooled reactors.
Where is the statement regarding the Soviets not having twin crews concept coming from? In his memoirs admiral (then captain) Giltsev desrcribes an argument with marshal Zhukov (then minister of defence of the USSR) when building the first boat of Project 627. Zhukov stated there was no reason for a nuclear sub to have twin crews as a main battle tank only has a single crew. Eventually Zhukov was convinced and K-3 got twin crews.
These Were a Real Threat!!! They would sail out to NATO/US formations of supply ships or SAGs, attack them by QUICKLY going in, FIRE, and Quickly move away and enjoy the view.....sometimes repeatedly!!! USN Veteran 84 - 05 onboard FF/FFGs
