    Nastya is 42yo, she retired in 2007 (16 years ago).
    This affair should have been massacre of the innocents!
    Still she looked quite competitive and you had to solve a few problems to overpower her.
    And her great sense of humor...
    Good for Nastya!

      So she retired at 26?

    • @mybraintunic
      @mybraintunic 8 місяців тому +36

      @@benparsons4979Yes, she did retire at 26. Not a very standard case, but it happens.
      For example, Martina Hingis (5 times single Grand Slam champion) retired at 27.

      @@benparsons4979It was a little early, but she was struggling with performance and injuries. At the time, most players retired around the age of 30, or soon after. It was very different than it is now.

    Nastya Myskina was one of the reasons I followed women's tennis back then. Her groundstrokes were laser-like and her anticipation was second only to Hingis. There's no player who plays with her elegance and grace at the moment in the women's game aside from maybe Rybakina. I miss her very much.

      @alani3992 I agree with you, but I was just talking about how elegant their manner of playing is. To me, it seems like they have an effortless way of playing tennis, which I appreciate very much. Lindsay Davenport and Roger Federer have the same quality.

      Sometimes people think that this or that foreign player doesn’t have a personality when, in fact, it’s often the fact that English is not their first language and they are not fluent enough to show their humour / personality. Rublev is viral for his humour but even with him i sometimes see how he translates his jokes from Russian and it would 100% be funnier in his language, also the delivery is different in different languages. I’ve seen this with Czech girls whose jokes often remain lost in translation lol

    I loved watching her in the early 2000s. I saw her play a world team tennis match in 2002 in Springfield, Missouri, she wasn’t a slam champion yet but she was becoming a top player at the time. Anyways I remember after the match going to get her autograph and there wasn’t even hardly a line to get it because John McEnroe was also there so I got to speak to her for a second. Nothing much I think I just told her she played really well and congrats and she said thank you but I remember her being really friendly and kind and smiling and stuff and it seemed very genuine. what this kinda reinforced to me was that one has to have a really gritty, unflappable, self-assured, and airtight personality to get anywhere within the WTA. even with the obvious power-difference at hand, she didn't lose one step of self-assurance; it was like she owned just being there. i can imagine any number of other people just really intimidated by the situation, but not an instant of that, at least visibly. brava to her, respect!

    Back in the day (1980), I was playing varsity High school tennis. I was a bit of a freak in that I hardly practiced but had a natural ability to serve and my serves reached nearly 120mph. Unfortunately, the rest of my game wasn’t at that level and my natural laziness prevented me from reaching my potential. Something I regret. Anyway, I was at a group lesson at Tam Tennis Club in north IL burbs and a younger girl was training with her coach on a nearby court. I noticed her coach exchange some words with the pro who was coaching our group. That pro, Bob Marimba(sp?), signaled for me to come over. When I did he told the younger girl , “ if you return this kids serve, then you can return just about any serve you’ll face in competition.” Needless to say she quickly started returning everything I had. It was like hitting against a wall. I don’t think I won a volley. That younger girl was Andrea Yeager. That’s My brush with greatness!

      However in many sports women are competing with men and in several instances competitive. I'm not saying in 2023 women should right now be in all men's sports. But if you look at history. Women are faster and stronger than ever before, and i think as time goes on youll see more and more women cross over into male sports. Not ready in 2023 not ready maybe even in 2083. But in the future sports will drastically look different.

    Though you make a big deal about her former abilities and success on tour, you also downplay your own ability before the play to make it seem like a victory by you would be a "major upset." In reality, your tennis is advanced enough and polished enough to not only stay with her, but to take it to her, using superior power and consistency. That was no upset. She was overpowered. What would've been more competitive, would've been a handicap set, where she has the alleys, and you get only one serve.

      It would have been disrespectful to her if he changed the rules to give her a chance for points, this was better in terms of respecting her by playing some points easy to give her a score and then overpowering her as her body is too weak to handle a man’s play right now

    Damn. U got to play a former Grand Slam champion, former world no 2 & the first female Russian grand slam champion ever. I am so jealous. I remember watching her back then she was really good. However she was just unlucky to be born during that era. Her era was the most competitive era in women's tennis ever. Names like The Williams Sisters, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters all peaked during her time. It was just a lot harder to win grand slams during that era compared to the last 10 years. Had she been born 10 years younger she would have win more slams in the 2010s.
