Modification to the Round Column Mill

- Gday, this is a modification I have needed to do for a long time now, this simple clamp system will allow the head to be raised and lowered without losing the position on the job, hopefully it will be reasonable accurate once its done, thanks for watching, Cheers
I did like my round column mill when I had it, but agree raising the head was something I avoided like the plague . . . Your piece looks good so far, will be waiting to see it come together in part 2.

Good project. Looking forward to seeing the end results. My son gave me a laser gizmo that projects a choice of a red spot or vertical beam. It has a magnet mounting arrangement, so I stick it to the side of the round column mill head. I project a vertical beam to a target (edge of a toolboard) on the wall about 5 metres away. Works accurately enough for the work I carry out.
Gday, that’s a good idea and having a vertical beam is a lot better the a single dot, if this build fails then I might have to get a similar laser, Cheers

My first mill was a round column mill I got 25+ years ago and I got so frustrated I gave up and sold it. This was before I knew anything about machining and there really weren't any UA-cam tutorials. How times have changed. I feel your frustration. Hopefully this solution will work out for you.

Hi Matty, Bruce Whitham makes and sells similar round head alignment kits similar to your proposed set up.
I took the lazy way out and mounted a laser and beam it on the wall some 15 feet away, gets me close enough.
The big problem is when you tighten the clamping bolts to secure the head to the column it shifts the head, albeit a small amount which makes it necessary to dial the job in again.
The curse of the round head mill!!!

Hello Matty. Nice work so far. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. I've been using my milling machine a bit lately and it's amazing how often I need more height. Luckily it's a conventional type with a knee. I'd be stuffed if I had the round column type. All the best. Mart in the UK.

If you haven’t split it yet, my 2c worth is to weld on the other tab ( the long one), before you split the ring.
Might reduce the opening up of that side of the ring?

I've been looking at round column mills. For the money they do look to be fairly girthy 😊. That seems to be the biggest issue with them. I like where your going with this. Looks like you have a chunk of induction hardened shaft there. Gonna be a high quality part! 😁 Thanks for sharing, Matty! I'll be following this for sure! Cheers! 👍
Gday Chris, overall there not a bad machine part from the round column, my biggest problem is I don’t think about job enough and forget to set the head height prior to starting and have to left it half way through then have to indicate the job back in again, being belt drive there’s not much that can go wrong there and it’s not hard to change spindle speed, Cheers
What ho Matty, I'm with you on the lazy front, nothing wrong in taking life easy once you attaon a certain age.
I nearly bought a roundie but I am very glad i didn't, it would have driven me mad and i don't have a lot of hair on the top of my head to pull out.
There is a quick simple and cheap way to keep head alignment, mount a laser pointer on the belt cover and point it to a vertical surface, like the corner of your shop, and you can maintain pretty close alignment. Obviously the farther awsy the wall the better but then you might need binoculars to see the spot.
I'll now continue watching.

My late father had the same frustration with his round column mill. He would have loved this - only 30 years too late 🙄.
I'd have been tempted to try trepanning to chew out the bore, but hindsight and distance are no use to you. You're doing fine as it is, Matty!

Yep. I got one o' them round column bastards too. Just made a spindle lock for the thing because I don't have three hands. Been thinking about making something to stop the head from swinging around. Right pain in the arse zeroing the thing all the time. Be interested to see how yours turns out.

G'Day Matty - I've often thought with round column machines why they don't key the head and have a bearing slew ring for the column - with graduations for angles on the ring. But the expense I guess might not make it feasible. Stay safe and well :)

Looks good so far. Have you considered that since welding on the lugs made the ring out of round what will happen when you weld on the tongue for the round bar? Maybe any further welding should be done in small steps and allowed to cool in between steps to minimize heat distortion. Or after the ring is split and tongue is welded take it for a ride on the rotary table. 😁👍

It takes some parts to make a pass on a ring that big with a flycutter, but it worked!

I have the idea of using a hydraulic cylinder ( open, with no fluid ) from a parts tractor where the top and bottom of the cylinder are fixed and all of the slide mechanisms are precise enough and provided. This would be contingent on the allowable travel or throw of the cylinder. Certainly the shaft is beefy enough. Just a thought.

I just got the same mil it's a grizzly go705 I don't have a lathe but I'm going to try and make this Cullum lock I really like the design wish me luck take for the video

I really like the design you've come up with and I think I'm going to build one for my Rong Fu RF-31. I may try a 4 inch hole saw to cut out the center section. It might save a lot of machining time and bit wear, as well as leaving a large portion of the metal for future use.
In your opinion, do you think that would work?

G'day Matty, watching this a year down the line and I'm curious mate. What made you put the parallel down in the bottom of the vice? Surely the lower you had the ring held the better, and your vice bottom is ground flat and parallel to the mill table so the flat would register properly. Not a criticism at all, I'm just curious as to your reason. Going to watch episode two if I can find it lol. Cheers from the UK mate, Sam
The parallel was in the bottom of the vice so the flat sat on it and kept the ring in the middle of the jaws

You'll need a bigger bar than that laddie if you want to stop the head from bending it....that bar is too slender and will spring.
