    If Stan hits 87 winners to 77 errors in the SF, it's called 'one of the matches of the year' and the very next day Ostapenko hits 54 winners to 54 errors, it's called 'too inconsistent', 'hits too many errors'. It's a grand slam final FFS and that young lady played fearless tennis that many others could only dream of. Give credit where it's due!

      Sidd Sakhamuri 87 winners to 77 unforced errors is better than 54 winners to 54 unforced errors by a ten point margin. Also, I'm a big fan of the women's game, but I think it's wholly disingenuous to say the Wawrinka-Murray SF was not of a higher quality than the Ostapenko-Halep final. Halep was at a deficit on the Winners to unforced errors count and she only hit 8 winners. 8! The Murray-Wawrinka SF was high quality shot-making and point construction tennis from both players. Halep-Ostapenko was "keep the ball in play and wait for my opponent to make errors" (Halep) vs "hit the ball as hard as I can" tennis (Ostapenko). How many times did either come to the net? And how many times did either win the point when they came to the net?

      At 3-0 and two chances to break in the second set Simona had the trophy in her bag. She lost that game, she was still a break up but from that moment on she started to play very defensive which allowed Ostapenko to attack, and attack. Jelena could have easily lost the match. In the end she more than deserved it, she earned it.

      Feliciano Guevara, Have you seen Stan play? There are plenty of guys on the ATP tour that play all or nothing tennis.
      Stan has more unforced errors in the first 3 sets of his match against Andy than Jelena had in her 3 sets.
      23 of her 54 errors came in the first set.
      I get it. It's only a problem when the women play like this, right? >.>
      This ain't the Superbowl. Defense might help you win the Superbowl but in tennis, offense wins.
      Simona only had 8 winners. Even Angie Kerber, who many refer to as a pusher had 20+ winners in both her GS victories.
      If defense won grand slams, Caroline and Aga would both have a mantle full of trophies.

      @gherbihicham8506 7 років тому +13

      Konrad Fereczy No, Nadal is actually better aggressively than he is defensively, don't get me wrong he is probably the best defender in the men's game but his aggressive game (especially his forehand) is what wins him matches, Nadal for instance never defends unless he absolutely has to.

    • @watchman1969
      @watchman1969 7 років тому

      In baseball we use to say "good attack win games, but good defense win the title". In tennis it's the opposite, because when you meet the best of the ranking (usally quarte finals, semi and final), only great defense isn't enough.
      Dave Rogers, perfectly said!
      Gherbi Hicham you are very wrong, before Federer era, there was a lot of shitty defense players that were great champions, look at Sampras, Rafter, Ivanisevic and others. Returning every single ball is great (defense), you will win a lot of games, but when you reach the finals, it isn't enough because the attack is much more refined for any defense.
      What I mean on Nadal is, when his strokes are short and high, he suffers and lose much more than when he hits deep and high. So, in order to win against Wawrinka, Nadal must attack deep and wide, because even being a great defender, he can't stop Wawrinka's attack all the time.

    Great match from both of them.
    Ostapenko wears her heart on her sleeve. She looses a point and lets every one know it was bad but when she is good she wins the french open.
    Her unrelenting default behaviour is to attack at every opportunity it's a delight to see her pace of shot combined with good placement and the effect it has on opponents.
    Halep should ask why she was under constant pressure when serving - the stats can give her the answer she made 0 double faults and got 73% first serves in but was winning only 55% on first serve.

    Jelena did not deserve to win with 50+ errors, but did deserve the win with 50+ winners and only 8 winners from Halep. 8 winners from Halep? Can't believe that . But for any woman to win, one must go for the shot.

      DChief89 I still think that she could do more with Wim...Darren is a great coach but at some points he doesn't help Halep that much with the tactics, he is trying to keep her calm (and that's a good thing) ,but Halep needs some help with the tactics because Darren can see the game better and he can analyse the game more on the bench...

    Ostapenko's game is similar to Sharapova. Goes for the ball/shot no regrets and high unforced errors rate. SO MUCH LOVE for Jelena! Proved that pushing back balls nowadays can't win yourself a grandslam

  • @ctony86
    @ctony86 7 років тому +7

    Actually I think Bacsinsky had best chance to beat Ostaenko, but she didn't slice and drop shot enough on both side, she did it only when she was on defence. if she had won that Semi vs Ostapenko, Simona is RG winner now. but Now I personally think the best chance for Simona to win GS had slipped away. the future will belong to Svitilina & Ostapenko.

    Jelena played like a champion, went after the ball (although many errors) and fought for every point. Halep on the other hand was pushing the ball, (so many lobs) and seemed to just give up at the end. Halep's grunting/screaming was awful in this match. Halep needs to captalize on these chances before Maria, Serena, Azarenka (a healed Kvitova ) come back, but it doesn't seem like she fights hard enough when it counts at slams.

    • @JenniiB94

    • @nambelas

      LOL yes. Aga and Woz never learn that defensive/finesse type players rarely won a GS these days. The last FINESSE (not defensive) player to win a GS is Schiavone. Even longer before that, with Hingis and Arantxa in 90's. Cibulkova, who is the shortest top player, managed to win YEC with her aggression. However, with all the money they pocketed, which are increasing every year, I don't think they need to worry about winning a GS either. No need to make a fool of ourselves by insulting them too far.

    • @nambelas
      @nambelas 7 років тому +10

      Uh, wait. I think we forgot someone so quickly. It's... Kerber LMAO. She is a defensive-minded player too. But Kerber was forced to be aggressive when she played Azarenka in AO QF, her nemesis. It was the turning point that gave her a lot of confidence en route to the AO title.
