      I think "Bryter Layter" may fit the category better but I do think Nick Drake is pretty much required listening as far folk-rock is concerned.

      This record is one of my favourites of all time. Such a good mix of that "regal" folk and elements of folk that are still echoing in modern folk/folk pop. Hell yes to Nick Drake.

      I haven't taken the time to delve into classic folk, but I can vouch for the Angel Olsen pick. Consistently interesting and affecting records that evoke primitivistic urges (i.e. lust,mindless restlessness) at least in me. One of my favorites from her is "Woman," which rests at a lengthy 7 minute commitment, but the composition keeps you interested until this end.

    I'd call the third Velvet Underground record a (borderline) folk rock record, as well as the second self-titled Bowie record, both released in 1969. Also Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter.

    Good stuff - I'd also add 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell and 'Workingman's Dead' by the Grateful Dead to the list. Good shout on Angels of Light too!

    Hey so I'm not sure that we have the same ear or appreciation for the same type of music generally, but I can't possibly deny your incredible expertise with all things musical. You suggest an album, I'm always listening to it. It doesn't always do it for me, but it was always music worth listening to. The difference is simply taste.
    This list was fucking killer though, all around.

    Ooo solid starter pack. Funny I didn't realize how much folk I was influenced by before viewing your list. I feel Astral Weeks by Van Morrison Blue by Joni Mitchell and Songs of Leonard Cohen were all deserving of a shout out but your list had a good selection so I can't complain.
    Can you recommend industrial music?

      Owen W he’d have to put sunbather on there and he’d probably put mayhems debut album, bathory’s blood fire death, emperors debut and maybe burzums debut also or one of the first three black metal albums of darkthrone

  • @CasualAlbiniAppreciator
    @CasualAlbiniAppreciator 5 років тому +1

    As far as UK folk/rock/punk goes, The Levellers - A Weapon Called The Word/Levelling The Land/Zeitgeist, one of the most loathed UK bands of 90s (at least by music press, alongside Cardiacs), anarchopunk slant of Zounds with some fantastic instrumentation, it might sound a bit quaint and poppy if you're used to the "alternative" folk, but honestly, just listen to Men-An-Tol, Belaruse, Fifteen Years, it's a perfect combo of British punk, rock, a hint of psychedelia (like on This Garden and Three Friends). 90s as fuck, still going at it and magnificent live.
