How The Edwardians Prepared Their Farms For Winter | Edwardian Farm | Absolute History

- Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn recreate the running of a farm as it would've been in the Edwardian era. The trio establish their domicile, scrubbing flagstone floor and cleaning out a clogged chimney. They put up hay, hire a stonemason to make a trough, learn to thatch, make rag rugs, begin keeping chickens and sheep. Ruth cooks a sheep's head stew.

I love this show. It's peaceful and informative. There's no anger. There's no politics. It's just three friends learning about the eras of the past and learning some of the skills used by people in those eras. Ruth's laugh is infectious. It's just lovely to see people living and getting along so well with each other.
Yes thank goodness none of the terribleness of todays world Leslie but a way to learn how we looked after ourselves without all the modern conveniences, detergents and medicines but natural remedies and such that didnt poison our earth.
@@s1nb4d59 yeah, now let's talk about the life expectancy of that period and think a little why it was so much lower than today.
"natural remedies", yes, of course, sure. (no, thanks.)
Thank you for saying what I feel. When you immerse yourself in loving one another, you create a healthy, happy environment. It isn't perfect, but you learn together and help each other. I hope we can all try to live this way, in whatever era we find ourselves.
Yes! And Ruth isn’t brash, trying to be a boss babe or anything. She is respectful which leads to respect for her.
Also, life expectancy wasn’t lower back then. Just saying.
@Knitspired and the Offgrid Homestead I agree, life was harder but not necessarily shorter, and they knew exactly what chemicals were floating around in their bodies.
Have you all seen 'Victorian Farm' and something along the lines of 'How to build a Castle' Ruthie and the gang are in those too 😊
it must be fantastic to be a historian in a country that values its own History and keep things and sites so well preserved!
Isn't it amazing! So much history there
I'm a former Brit ( became a US citizen a year ago ) and we have so much history and invention that my (now) fellow Yanks can only dream of!
I read the Morwellham Quay wiki & it sounds like the county council stopped funding their outdoor museum right around the time this was filmed, basically bringing the place to bankruptcy- so sad!! (Perhaps a response to impacts of the recent GFC?) Thankfully, it appears to have been quickly taken over by & funded by a nearby similar historical site...?
Im British, living in Bulgaria. Whilst there is a crazy amount of archaeology and history here its not accessible like it is in the UK. I really miss being able to say "lets go to Alnwick castle" or lets go to the railway museum - I mean my neighbour literally had a castle in his garden, we had a ruined castle up the road as kids to play on - its everywhere and its open and its accessible.
The National Trust is an amazing institute and I never begrudged my membership.
In Bulgaria its all under the ground and its illegal to dig it up cos they dont have the resources to look after it and stop it from getting robbed.
Funny how people believe that myth …
PLEASSSEEEE make more videos with Ruth, Peter and Alex!!!!! Im addicted. Peter and Alex have such a sweet, funny and just wholesome relationship together. Competitive but it's a sweet way. And Ruth is just perfect! Point plank. She knows everything and she's so positive. I don't know what it is specifically but I want her on my team in all aspects of life lol.
They're all just so relatable and have an amazing presence on camera. They deserve even more praise than given.
I second this
I concur!! 🤗♥️
have you seen all of their other farm series? the first series is called Tales from the Green Valley
I completely agree. More please! The entire farming series from the different eras are so well done.
They have several series with all of them in it...
tales from the green
Wartime farm
Victorian farm and I think maybe another one...
Watching them clean the chimney like oh no she's gonna have to scrub them floors again.
And again!
@@justanotherperson584 me
At least they didn’t use a young child to clean it like in the olden days! 😳
she did comment about having to scrub it twice a day 🤔
@@hotbxdkitty969 for some reason your comment finally triggered the explanation as to why in the world anyone would care to scrub their floors daily; is foot traffic really that bad? No silly, they’ve got a fricken fire going in the wall all day which means soot… duh! Lol
I love how he hugs the chicken the entire time! And I also love that he didn't saccrifice the chicken to clean the chimney
pity he threw it off the roof.. chickens are almost flightless, and you can see in his face that it flew like a stone

I’m watching this series for the fourth time. I love this series, & the Victorian period series, & the Tudor period series.
I simply love immersive history.
Watch Wartime Farm! Not bad either!
This is my second time. I’m completely enthralled by these series!
I too watched them all, I think they are brave to go back and "live"in a different time!!💗
@@nonamerooster5413 I second this! And I also suggest the Secrets of the Medieval Castle season as well!
War time farm, and green acres are awesome too, I’ve watched them over and over
I have to say that this trio is indomitable. They've done so much in so many centuries.
Peter is straight-up giving me Mr. Darcy vibes when he was up at that quarry.
How true that! Nearly blown over
I'm a little bit in love with him after watching the Victorian farm series
Do try to see the train series after Alex teases Peter & he cleaned up all pretty needs a men's hair rinse🤭&my favorite Colin the man with the talent wartime Christmas super
Lol-I think I wrote in one of the other videos that he's like a more rugged, less posh Colin Firth
I was thinking a young Oliver Reed or Ian McShane when he had had his shave
Ironically, I'm sure that sheep's head stewed with cheap fresh vegetables was far healthier than the tinned and heavily processed products aimed at the Edwardian middle classes
Safer too.
(assuming they actually had enough to eat) I think throughout history the poor have generally been healthier. They are simple good food while the rich ate lots of meat, sugar, white flour etc, hence why they got the 'diseases of kings', aka all of our leading killers today now that everyone can afford to eat like shit
Nothing wrong with a bit of metal chips in your canned products and a nice stewing of lead
I totally agree
Sure, but the middle classes were still classed as 'peasants' until not too long ago - the middle class even going back to the middle ages were technically property owners if they 'owned' a farm, because as long as the land or property you 'owned' was on a Lord's land, they still owned you and everything you do essentially. Meaning you were still a peasant. The class system wasn't dissimilar to the American system, for example - a lot of American's today call themselves middle class as long as they have 2 cars, a large-ish house with quite good jobs. That's not the case in England. To be middle class, you have money and a certain breeding. If i inherited £1 million today, i wouldn't suddenly become middle class, regardless of how i lived. My class is dictated upon my breeding and history of my family to a great extent, that even if i were a millionaire - i just wouldn't be middle class according to most people.
Watching them clean that chimney like, "her floor!" 😱
I was thinking the EXACT same thing why did she try to light the stove BEFORE they brought in all the furniture and had a beautiful clean floor
I know, same thing I was thinking 😂!
Oh my God me too! It didn't make any sense not to at least use an old sheet or something to cover up the chimney area and the stove before they ran that thing through
Lol I know right!!! They should clean it up themselves since they made the mess!!!
@fred McMurray I kind of thought the same thing. That opening in the chimney was probably to check the draw. Maybe they included it on purpose?
The boatman made more money during this filming than he probably made in the past 20 years he’s quite a fountain of knowledge to the farmers.
Timestamps please
Bless Mr. Mudge. He looks like a hobbit and I can’t help but love him
Maybe "hobbits" were portrayed in the movie based on edwardian era people... :)
He's just the best!
He really is a pro.
Mudge for PM.
@@tmsaskg That is very possible. Mr. Mudge in his Edwardian garb would've fit right into Hobbiton. The name is even Hobbit-ish. He would've made a wonderful Bilbo.
When I watch these shows and it says they live in each period for one year...I keep thing that it should be a daily show and I would watch every one!
I have watched these several times already.
Me too. Although I suspect they have days off so there probably wouldn't be one for every day. Ruth is married and her kids were teenagers at the time of filming this I think so I doubt she just went "see you I'm off" and left for a whole year lol.
Definatly that would be great
That would be awesome… but they’ve said in interviews the production crews during filming weeks slowed things down work wise and was inconvenient on a farm, which does makes sense
@@Neddoest I'd love to see a "making of" follow-up to these farm series.
That chicken he is holding is so patient and well behaved
Katie Vogt he later mentions they were his chickens brought from home so I imagine they’re quite used to him handling them

"I have my chicken, my God, and my country sir!" That's how I would address everyone.
I love when they bring all the experts who keep these skills alive.
Thanks to #AbsoluteHistory for acknowledging the audio problems and for their plans to reupload corrected versions. ☆☆☆☆☆
Absolute History wrote, "We hear you! We're aware of the ongoing issues with some of the audio tracks on our Farm & Pharmacy videos, and we're working on fixing them." They added, "All the faulty videos will eventually be replaced, but please bear with us as we source and fix these one by one. In the meantime, please accept our sincere apologies!"
Ah yes we spoke&they heard & turned the sound down a bit&added 5 adverts to the Utube play-haha probably only in the US(They misguidedly think we like them on here when we pay a fortune to get them on cable) this is great free ads&all
And a year later they continue to pour out new content and haven't done a damn thing about fixing the audio problems in this and (at least) Wartime farm. It's a shame as these videos are such good content and worth multiple rewatches but the sound problems take away so much from enjoying them.
Rewatching this series for the fourth time now. Man, I really hope they make more alike this, it's great! Alex, Peter and Ruth are wonderful!

That's not flying, that's falling with style!
its fine he can fly
Better than going down the chimney
I love how he YEETS the chicken off the roof, after talking about how he couldn't stand to shove the thing down the chimney
Yeah it's a bit mean of him, but even if the chicken couldn't fly, due to its dimensions especially counting for all the Ruffles in the feathers creating friction, it's terminal velocity is much lower than that of a human, so even if it did suffer injury upon landing it would be less than that of a human and even with Fair bit of speed as its whole body has a lot less weight to support upon impact.
@@copperpumpkin2648 ITS A BIT MEAN TO LET A FLYING ANIMAL GO??!!!??!?!?! Where has this overly PC world come to

I watched when they lived for a year on The 17th Century Farm in The Green Valley...just to see the light that they have in the house on the Edwardian Farm, let alone the thatching machine for the roofs...I'm so happy for them & I'm sure they were too. What a huge difference in farming from the 17th Century. Wonderful show & very informative, like finding out that they would use chickens to clean out the chimney. Love the peace & the good energy of everyone involved.
Love the Mudge family. I'm from Devon farming stock myself until my grandparents time. I'd love to live and experience like this. Understand how they lived, and how they managed.
This series (as well as their other series) are fantastic history lessons. My children have learnt so much.
I need these three to go all the way back to stone age Britain. I'm fully invested now
This series was particularly interesting for me. Not only is it the year my father was born and which my grandparents lived, but they were also from Devon. I would love to have this experience like this marvelous team did. Thank you so much for airing it for me to watch. It meant a lot to me.
As a historian, I love these documentaries. I am so unbelievably jealous lol
My greatgranddad was a carpenter and farmer and my village was fairly backwards...they lived in a house with shingles outside made of hazel rods, wood, and a mix of clay, straw and uhm...poo, but built a modern (back then) house with a stone foundation and bricks on top. We still have a bunch of stuff, including machine-like stuff. I've seen that all my life and never really thought about it.
Also, my grandma had and used a stove like Ruth is using now up until I was around 7th grade...and I'm 30. She didn't even have anything else to cook, but she did have an oven for baking long before I was born. She quite liked that stove since it was the most amazing and lovey thing, truly, obviously much newer and in much better condition than Ruth's. She sold it to a collector eventually.
My sister cooks on-and heats her home with an old coal and gas range. It’s lovely. But I admit I would t want to deal with bringing up coal from the cellar and dealing with klinkers and ash and dust. She has super efficient hepa filters tho. She’s not old fashioned enough to not care about breathing coal dust☺️. She’s got a couple Victoria’s and gas fireplaces and so many oil lamps the kind with painted shades. When the power goes out her house doesn’t look or feel at all any different. It is beautiful. Plus hens eggs and garden canning for veg and summer fruits in winter.
I am lucky she is so industrious bc I’m disabled and could never. I wish I could.
.. gosh. Sorry to drag on. And it’s so neat you grew up with that adorable stove at your Grammy’s.
I hope you and yours are well and have a happy healthy new year in 2023✨💜✨

I have been watching this series out of sequence in order to view episodes in which I had a particular interest. Now I am at Episode One. In the early 1940's, near the start of WW 2 my grandparents bought what had been an Amish farm. No electricity, telephone, indoor plumbing or other modern fixtures. When my family stayed for a weekend we lived as did Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn. I'm really enjoying this series as it takes me back to a time (I have an excellent memory sharply remembering events that occurred when I was one and two years old) which many call "a simple life" but in actuality was difficult and required a high skill level merely to survive. A five/five star rating for this series.
Every time I rewatch these shows (it's about 5 times each at this point) I'm always lamenting Peter's poor, poor back. It's gone through a lot.
I watch these in my caravan, with a glass of gin and my interior design magazine and I feel the stress of modern life melt away! Thanks to all involved! The nice thing is my husband and three children watch it too and we have a family joke about Peter inspecting the Randy ram on Victorian farm 😅

It would have been funny if someone said “why do you keep calling it the FIRST Word War?”
Ikr... if someone had stayed a little too far into character
Actually, despite what it says on Wikipedia, it was already being called the First World War while it was still being fought in 1918. The name was first coined by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles à Court Repington as recorded in a diary entry of 10 September 1918. He also wrote a two volume history of the conflict called "The First World War" published in 1920.

They've been delving into their own History. Our History isn't theirs. There's tons of recreationist groups here in the States, you should totally look into them. I've played with medieval groups, wild west & pioneer groups and Roman Empire groups. So much fun. edit: I say this to mean I'm sure there's folks here that do just that. If you have a chromecast, I've not had a single ad. Shame they're so frequent.
How can ppl in 2020 still not know about using ad blockers?
I pay for UA-cam Premium.
It sucks to pay, but the service removes the ads and improves the experience immensely.
I really enjoy UA-cam for the most part, like access to quality shows like this one, so it seems like a good investment for me.
For those who said in 2020 we should all have an adblocker, is there such a thing as adblocker for use with the Android UA-cam app? I agree that Premium does improve the experience, but I'm not able to pay right now (still COVID19 furloughed) but I did enjoy a 3 month free trial that ended a few weeks ago. 🤷🏼♀️

They have made all of these wonderful series, I would love to see what the town series of the victorian and other times were like!🥰
Turn Back Time: The Family 👍🏻
They have a full 5 different series that focus on 5 different time periods!!!!
1. Tudor Monastry Farm (1457-1509)
2. Tales From The Green Valley (1620)
3. Victorian Farm (1837-1901)
4. Edwardian Farm (1901-1910)
5. War Time Farm (1938-1946)
And there is a 6th series with Ruth, Alex and Peter, but it doesn't really focus on a set time period. It's called Secrets Of The Castle, and it is still just as awesome as the Farm Series!!
Hahaha Ruth realising she's got to scrub and clean those floors again be like 👁️👄👁️

12:10. The illusion of choice. Most of the recognisable brands have been bought up over the years by a very small number of huge multi-national corporations. There was probably more genuine variety of independent producers in Soviet Russia in the 1950's, than there is today in the UK. lol

Starting this New Year🎉, I love watching these videos again. Such a wonderful change from the usual politics, bad news, and domesday rhetoric being shoved down our throats. Ruth and her co-historians trigger such an interest in the beauty of life and land with cohabitating in harmony for the common good….even with the thought of how difficult and dangerous (illnesses, especially) life had been in the past; but, with realizing how each century has their own difficulties and dangers, there is something about getting back to nature and community that can really lift the spirits.
i really appreciate learning about the farming wisdoms and sciences
I like to think that Alex took up raising chickens after his time on the Victorian Farm
I am positive, he went home and buys his chicken at KFC now. He just says how much he appreciates the food twice .
I think you are correct!! The only one of the 5 period farm series Alex wasn't on was Tales From The Green Valley(2005), and that was the first series they made. So, his first appearance was on Victorian Farm(2009). And this was the second series he was a part of! So I do believe he started keeping chickens between Victorian and Edwardian Farm(2011).
Great programme. Great team. Thank you.

And then they did War Time Farm and then Tudor Monastary Farm and before all of them they did Tales From The Green Valley, but Alex wasn't a part of that one.
first saw this on tvo here in Canada, loved it then , still love it now in 2024
