I definitely think a dedicated scanner is the way to go for scanning film. I use an Epson V600 which I got for $200 USD. I can get really great quality film scans with it that I can perfect in Photoshop. But it's good to know that a smartphone option exists as well.
Yea, with a macro lens and a tripod you will get much better results compared to a flatbed scanner. It doesn't need to be a super expensive lens or camera, I use my 16mp micro 4/3 camera I already own and a $50 Nikkor 50mm macro lens off ebay. Especially with medium format scans when zoomed in 100% on the scanner grass would look mushy but when using the macro/camera combo each blade of grass is sharp. It works great on 35mm as well but it takes longer compared to a flatbed.
Great... can you explain me briefly what are the parameters that you choose to do the picture in your camera (I mean aperture, speed and ISO). Thanks a lot!
I set aperture to f8 so it's sharp at the corners and set ISO as low as I can. Shutter speed is usually anywhere from a 15th-4th of a second (I go as bright as I can without clipping to capture all the highlight detail, check your histogram) and use a 2 second timer on the shutter to make sure I don't shake it. Also, tape up the amber light on the front of the camera, I have gotten that reflected in the scans before. I forgot to mention, I use a cheap light table off amazon as the backlight!
An extension tube eliminates the need for a macro lens. Add black cardboard or plastic to mask the negatives and block the light table from your lens, and you can get great results from a dslr or mirrorless camera. Use software like Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom, and it will handle reversing color negatives beautifully.
I got the lomo film scanner when it was on Kickstarter because I moved to London and had to leave my Epson V700 in Australia. It was awful, i just paid for the labs to scan instead! I have a Lomokino and only shot one or two rolls with it because yes, it is an absolute pain to scan on the flatbed, and by the time I got this lomo film scanner I couldn't be bothered shooting with it again. Maybe I'll have to dust it off and put some effort in...one day
I used to scan my (bw)negatives with an Epson V750, but since I moved abroad I switched to using my Sony A7ii and a 1:1 macro lens. Already had the camera and a tripod, so I spent about a 100 bucks on a LED light pad, the macro lens and a film holder. Some people say it's too much of a hassle, but I disagree. I only use the light pad for scanning so I used some gaffer tape and hobby cardboard to make a guide for the film holder. This way I simply take a photo, push the film holder to the right and continue, it actually goes quite quickly. After that I made an Action in Photoshop that inverts the image, converts to grayscale and adjusts the levels. Works like a charm, better results than I got from the Epson scanner.
I think with using the phone, if you use a light bed at its highest settings, use an app that shoots raw, and use Negative Lab Pro instead, you might get better results. I would even say try it again the camera from the most recent iPhone or Pixel.
Every type of color negative film has a different orange mask. A good scanner reads the DX code from the edge of the film and does a proper inversion (without color casts). Really enjoyed this review. Can you tell us who made those nice prints for you?
can i print with a b/w laser printer a negative on folio, pictures from taken with a dsl camera, to make a oldschool laburatuar bath picture print process?
Clau
Interesting video. This seems like it would be good for just uploading things to instagram from film just for the ease of use. You can get a decent used scanner and be happier with it for longer for twice as much as the lomo device brand new. Is that a collapsible summicron on the M8?
I actually watched this review 2 days ago and still bought the device. I left with the impression that it was alright for B/W. I now think it's worth a review of 20 seconds by saying "Don't buy this gimmick, it doesn't work because smartphones aren't designed to scan film negatives. Unless you have a top smartphone, maybe you'll get a half-decent result but otherwise don't bother. It's nothing but a cheap plastic box with a light in it."
It’s not a great tool. I realized this device is really the only way to scan LomoKino rolls. That’s its real use. Not that the LomoKino is a great tool, but if you want to use it, this is really the only way to scan those film strips.
Ok, I know this comes late and you probably know the answer by now. The issue with the pictures from the Canon and from the IPhone is that you scanned it with the borders and the cameras included the borders when they calculated the white balance. You have the same issue when you scan a negative on a scanner with the borders. The trick is to select only the picture itself for the white balance.
Hey Ed, I've just started to shoot film in street situations where I want to include people more and more. How often do you find the need to say something before or after taking the picture? or do I have to improve my deception skills and get used to getting a few looks. Cheers and love your content
I just play it by empathy. Put yourself in the other person's shoes and do what you would like to be done. I mostly just pretend to shoot something else and steal pictures, but when I can't do that, I try to be as respectful as I can. There's almost no need to talk. Just a smile is enough, usually. But I know people who love to talk with their subjects. Each to its own. :)
I thought about getting one of these just to review negatives more easily but inherited an old tele lens that i use as a huge Loupe. Great review. Not really worth the price for me.
EduardoPavezGoye I totally agree. I scan my b&w negatives as positive with my Epson V550 and adjust it in DxO Optics Pro. But do you scan your color negatives as positive or as negatives in the scanning software? I also want to start shooting color negative film.
I know you've already had enough of silly "equipment question," but since you have Mamiya C330 in the background you might maybe help me out. Is C330-C220 a camera for a newbeginner(never shot Medium format film before)? I want to enter medium format film without breaking the bank. Some recommendations? (Something between 500-1000$. Mainly portrait and landscape)
in my humble opinion, there are no "professional" cameras for film. there are only cameras with more or less features, but if you know how to operate a DSLR, you can operate any film camera with ease. I can't be objective on this one, since I really enjoy my C330. I say go for it!
I have been shooting digital for 10 years now. I just want some change, thats it. And I dont want to spend big money. Based on reviews C220 is considerably lighter then C330. Thx alot bro :)
You should definitely go with dslr setup with the proper materials. a good film holder and a macro lens makes that much of a difference. Scans are comparible to the nikon coolscan 9000 which is impressive, but at maybe a quarter of the time it takes to scan in the nikon coolscan.
Interesting tools. I prefer repro on a camera or scanner than using lomo scanner. May be for practical reason may be it will beneficial? May be? Ha ha thanks for sharing ✨🙏🏼✨
I definitely think a dedicated scanner will produce a higher quality image. But the smartphone scanner is convenient and an okay option for folks who don't have access to a scanner.
nice video but we are missing a lot of information, like for example, what's the resolution of the scans with the phones ? How do they compare with a normal image taken by the phone ? What's the definition of the scans ? What's the exposure latitude ? It's a nice video but (and I think it goes for all your videos on a certain degree, even though I enjoy them a lot) It would be better to have some more technical informations
Hi Ed. Perhaps you should try this technique for color correcting your images. I find it does a better job than the scanners software: www.iamthejeff.com/post/32/the-best-way-to-color-correct-c-41-negative-film-scans (And when I'm feeling really nerdy, I'll do some additional white balancing as well: photoblogstop.com/photoshop/accurate-white-balance-adjustments-in-photoshop ) Hope this helps you!
cool links, I'll check them out for sure! I know very well how to correct negative scans. the problem is the lomo scanner pictures give a pink cast that, once you correct it, burns other colors. it's a JPG, after all, there's not much room to play, and if the WB is so off, correcting it with such low quality becomes impossible without damaging the picture. :(
You're completely right. And your processing is always really nice, so I'm sure you really know how to treat a negative 😉 As for the Lomo Scanner: maybe you could use it with the Lightroom app and photograph the negatives as DNG? That would give you a lot more info to work with.
Exito, Gracias. www.flickr.com/photos/142728930@N07/
Are you still using it? I really want it but I cant afford and its not available here in the Philippines. If its okay for you, Can I please have it? Pleaseeee 😭🙏
i think you should do a video about white balance. totally unfair. man dont want to upset you but hey, just get you edit skills better. where is your white point.

Phenomenology of the Spirit and Cheeseburger slippers.... Count me in. thanks for the demo.
Your new look reminded me of Ed kemper lol

Brutal.

nice one. I've heard pretty good things about that method!
Nice slippers Ed! Your videos along with Matt Day's are what got me started in film photography! Excellent work!
Thanks Rody. I'm really glad you enjoy it.
(I love my slippers!)

Hi Edoardo, please what kind of light panel do you use for checking negatives?thank you.
as always eduardo, nice..........hamburger pantoufles 😂😂
What is that light panel you are using when you were shooting the film with the camera?
Second that question please Eduardo
haha the review that nobody asked for... but i still watched it.
i watched it just because of that...
Hola! Buen día, que fuente de luz utilizas al momento de hacer la foto con la eos m? Saludos! Excelentes videos! :)
Have you tried the Kodak App instead the Lomography App?
Would love to see the results
La crítica de la razón pura detrás, vigilando que haces lo que debes jaja grandes tus pantuflas 😄
pues sí! Kant era un viejo terrible, pero hay que rendirle tributo a su legado. hahah.
Hey ed, very informative video, just wondering what mask you use for your scanner when using 35mm film, thanks
Hej nice video! What scanner do you use?
Every type of color negative film has a different orange mask. A good scanner reads the DX code from the edge of the film and does a proper inversion (without color casts).
Really enjoyed this review. Can you tell us who made those nice prints for you?
I printed it in a small lab in Chile: www.migo.cl/
cheers!
So for cell phone cameras now... now that we have the ability to shoot raw and process in Lightroom.. will this work better now?
I think it's better, but not good enough yet.
EduardoPavezGoye thanks for the reply!! And yeah I’ll pass on it. I’m using a macro lens and a light table to scan my films.
I use a m43 with a 50mm macro, a few filter rings without glass (as spacers) and a Nikon es-1 slide copier. Hot shoe mounted flash
can i print with a b/w laser printer a negative on folio, pictures from taken with a dsl camera, to make a oldschool laburatuar bath picture print process?

Para la lomokino, creo que el scanner de lomo es el mejor.
Interesting video. This seems like it would be good for just uploading things to instagram from film just for the ease of use. You can get a decent used scanner and be happier with it for longer for twice as much as the lomo device brand new.
Is that a collapsible summicron on the M8?
yes it is. :)
Oh cool, for some reason I thought they didn't work for the digital M's. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.
I've just started shooting b&w a few months ago. What'd the best cheapest way to temporatily scan b&w film to upload to my computer?
cheapest: your cellphone. it will look like crap, but there's no way around it.
second best: your DLSR (if you have one).
1 really wanted to like the smartphone scanner because its portable and convenient for travel but yeah. That's sad that the results are not so good.
I actually watched this review 2 days ago and still bought the device. I left with the impression that it was alright for B/W. I now think it's worth a review of 20 seconds by saying "Don't buy this gimmick, it doesn't work because smartphones aren't designed to scan film negatives. Andreas Schröder no, I color corrected the balance in post. The issue is dynamic range and how broken the colors get (and noise and resolution) ;)
EduardoPavezGoye Hmmm... I stand corrected 😉
Another great video mate....PS love the slippers

Hi, what scanner did you use?
Epson 4490
Hello Ed! Can you tell, what kind of scanner you use for color 35mm film?
Epson 4490: ua-cam.com/video/X5wacItEHrc/v-deo.html
Thank you!
Nice photos!
Do you use the auto exposure and auto color correction on your scanner? And do you edit the scanned photos afterwards?
I scan the pictures as TIFF and adjust in Lightroom afterwards. the adjustment tools in the scanner software are horrible.
EduardoPavezGoye I totally agree.
I scan my b&w negatives as positive with my Epson V550 and adjust it in DxO Optics Pro.
But do you scan your color negatives as positive or as negatives in the scanning software? I also want to start shooting color negative film.
oh, I scan them as color negative, so I have a TIFF with the colors ready to be corrected in LR, without needing to invert them. :)
EduardoPavezGoye Alright, thank you for answering my questions 😉
I know you've already had enough of silly "equipment question," but since you have Mamiya C330 in the background you might maybe help me out. Hi loving your channel. Just a question:what scanner do you use?
Should have cropped the other photos from the Lomo and handheld.
Critique of poor scanning, phenomenology of scanners or the sublime object of scanning?
Groundworks for the metaphysical of scanning.
me encantan tus videos, sigue asi! saludos desde Argentina :)
Works much better now with latest smartphones...
shout out to those AMBURGAR slippers !
very nice video

the slippers did it for me hahaha
It’s definitely possible to get better results with a DSLR.
I really need a proper scanner :p
Epson V600 is fairly cheap and really good!
Love those hamburger slippers!
Evangeline Cheng yes great slippers
and I like your face without the beard!
Nos puedes decir lo que ha pasado a la barba? 😬
Me disfracé de Trotsky para Halloween y la barba se fue. En mi Instagram publiqué una foto al respecto. ;)

thanks for the compliment. man, I had NO IDEA the Lightroom app can make the iPhone shoot as DNG. that's awesome!
I was expecting that.
Gracias por ponerlo en español :)
