I am an average French dude born in the late 70's. Live Dead was the first Grateful Dead album I ever listened to and even if Dark Star was so good it was almost a mystical experience, this blues right here made me feel like few musical performances can. Very, very dark, heartfelt song by a guy who happened to be dead just a couple of years before I discovered his music. Of course, as times marches on, anybody can feel the impact of this song much harder. Stay safe people, enjoy what's left.

Just about as good as any electric blues band from the era. There's a phenomenal amount of feel and dark energy to this masterpiece reworking of the Rev Gary Davis classic. If this is what death feels like, we have nothing to fear children.

Avevo 18 anni quando ascoltai per la prima volta questo brano, era registrato su di una audiocassetta di un amico, e subito mi innamorai della potente sofferenza del contesto musicale, ogni volta che andavo a trovare questo amico insistevo perché me lo facesse ascoltare, tanto che qualche anno dopo, non trovandolo in vendita presso i rivenditori, si consideri che si parla dei primi anni 80, questa persona mi regalo questa registrazione, e negli anni successivi la ascoltai tante e tante di quelle volte che il nastro si ruppe più volte, e taglia e ricuci taglia e ricuci alla fine fui costretto a gettare nella spazzatura la audiocassetta, invano per i trent'anni successivi tentai di rintracciare questa registrazione presso i vari rivenditori, non ero neanche sicuro che questo brano appartenesse ai grateful dead perché la videocassetta da 90 mins su cui era registrato il brano, era una una cassetta replicata in casa, e su di essa erano registrati più brani di diversi gruppi musicali, più volte cercando di trovare questa canzone credevo di aver trovato il pezzo, salvo poi rimaner deluso perché i tratti salienti mai corrispondevano a ciò che ricordavo ed amavo...., circa tre anni fa, e casualmente ascoltando musica per radio mentre guidavo l'automobile, ebbi la "grazia" di ascoltarlo nuovamente, sperai che al termine del brano lo speaker dell'emittente radiofonica desse ragguagli sul gruppo e sulla titolo della canzone ma.., niente da fare, probabilmente lo speaker aveva dato i queste informazioni all"inizio della trasmissione, ed io purtroppo mi ero sintonizzato troppo tardi. When I was a young man I went briefly to a rinky dink midwestern lib arts college, I dated this girl for a bit that I liked alot then I got in trouble and her dad(some computer ceo) tried bribing me with cash to stay away and I said I wont take your cash but I will for your lesh and pigpen signed vinyl of live dead. A deal was struck I never spoke to her again and still havent(hope you are well Kim) but 10 years later(10 years ago) my daughters mother threw the record away when she changed the locks so all I got is this story.

I first heard this record 45 years ago when friendly hippy at work leant it to me. then i went up to London on the train and bought my own copy, 12 February 1977 I think that was. I loved this song, it obviously took quite a special band to be able to pull this off, the Grateful Dead played to so slow, ten minutes of it! And Jerry is a great folk singer: he may not be the most verstaile singer technically, but his singing is an integral part of his and the whole band's instrumental work. Everything constributes towards the whole very poweful performance.
After officially joining the GD as a full-fledged member in fall '68, a few months before this was recorded, TC took over most of the keyboard duties, while Ron ("Pigpen") was relegated to congas. TC and Ron got along well, even though their musical styles couldn't have been more different and TC had displaced Ron as the principal keyboardist; both were distancing themselves from the whole psychedelic drug scene by this time. TC later said that he had a hard time working his keyboard work, especially live, through the weave of Jerry and Bob's guitars and Phil's bass, and of course he quit the band in early '70 after less than one and one-half years as a full-time member. Ron, of course, took over the organ for this song, and man, did he play! His blues phrasing and his tracking of/interplay with Jerry's guitar in the instrumental sections are spot on. Unfortunately, Ron became sick with liver disease by the beginning of the '70s, ironically after TC quit and the keyboard slot in the band was re-opened, and ultimately died almost four years to the day after this was recorded (this concert was in SF on 12 March '69; Ron died, on his half-birthday, a member of the sad "27 club," on 8 March '73 at his rented house in Corte Madera). God bless Ron, Jerry, and all of them.
The Dead had been playing this song since the Acid Tests and maybe even earlier according to Phil Lesh, Pigpen was well familiar with it and i would nt be surprised if he turned the others on to it, since he was a heavy devotee of the blues.

I was 12 in '67 and only aware of any "scene," by reading scare articles about acid in my parents' magazines (Life, Time, Look, The New Yorker, etc.- they subscribed to a lot of them) and in the local newspaper. Didn't see them for the first time until I was a freshman at Berkeley in fall '73 (Winterland, October), by which time, as I am sure you are aware, the scene had changed massively. I envy those of you who knew them and heard them in their earliest days.
Death is a bitch. Jerry had to deal with his fair share of untimely deaths (starting with his Father). Anyone that has lived through the same can relate to the emotions that he's sharing here. Big thank you.
All honor to Jerry, Pig, and the boys -- but to me, the "best" version of "Death Don't Have No Mercy" I've ever heard is the one Chicago guitarist/vocalist Lurrie Bell did (solo acoustic) at the Chicago Blues Festival a few years back. Lurrie has survived some unspeakable tragedies in his life, and he pours it all into his music. When he eased into this song, the universe itself seemed to stand still . . . and he tore notes from his guitar as if tearing pieces out of his own flesh.
