- Pope John Paul I (1912 - 1978) reigned 26 August 1978 to his sudden death 33 days later. His reign is among the shortest in papal history. His sudden death has led to a number of conspiracy theories. His two immediate successors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, later recalled the warm qualities of the late pontiff in several addresses.
In Italy, he is remembered with the appellatives of "Il Papa del Sorriso" (The Smiling Pope) and "Il Sorriso di Dio" (The smile of God). Time magazine and other publications referred to him as The September Pope. He is also known in Italy as "Papa Luciani".

I don't think we will ever know the whole story of the unexpected death of Pope John Paul I. Best known as the Smiling Pope. He is still missed to this day.

Such a humble man, he was one of my favorite popes.
@eduar ed I remembered him when he was elected on August 26th 1978. I immediately thought that he had a certain gentleness, warmth, simplicity and humility about him which was a manifestation of his holiness. He was my favorite pope and I was heartbroken by his extremely short reign as Supreme Pontiff and Bishop of Rome. We can look back at him and fondly remember his smile and other attributes that were his and think of what might have been. I think that he would have been a great pope and to date, I have a picture of him on my desk at work.
His is a beautiful soul that radiated from him and could be felt by others.
We had him for such a brief time but he left his mark....God bless him.
And he achieved so much during those brief thirty-three days :-)

This was so lovely. It shows you the purity and blessing of a simple smile. It makes me tear up, thinking of this Holy man and of him being poisoned. I am reading a book & it says he spoke in the local Venetian dialect with the religious sisters who worked with him at the Vatican to make them feel more comfortable. He was going to expose the evil, but they got to him first & murdered him. He is a martyr & we must not forget him. Ora pro nobis dear Papa JP I. ❤

It all looked so promising, and then he was taken from us. I still am puzzled why there was no autopsy. Will we ever know if his death really was a heart attack, or if something else intervened?

I heard about him some time ago(I was born in 2002). When I knew about his history, I knew he was a great pope even for only 33 days. He deserves to be remembered.

I was not to hear till thirteen years later, in May '91 (through David Yallop's "In God's Name"), that he had most likely been poisoned, and this, in turn, was reportedly because his proposed reforms on a collision course with both the Mafia and Italian freemasonry.
That's been disproved too; research has established that low blood pressure was pretty much the only ailment he had. Both Diego Lorenzi and John Magee, his two secretaries, always said he was a healthy man and Lorenzi pointed out that his personal doctor, Dr. Giovanni Rama, was "very surprised that they [at the Vatican] did not ask me to come."
