- When the pandemic hurt his wedding photography business, photographer Carlos Gauna switched to taking drone photos and videos of great white sharks along California’s coast and discovered just how close the animals come to surfers and swimmers. Despite the close encounters, Gauna says he has not seen a single shark attack - but he still gets nervous seeing them swim near people. NBC’s Erin McLaughlin reports for Weekend TODAY.

Drone Video Captures Great White Sharks Along California Coast | TODAY
Of course they are there, they live there WE don't !!!
You deserve more praise than you're getting. The service you give is to protect people while they enjoy the waters. For the life of me, why would anyone want to swim where sharks can tear you apart.
And that's Why I don't Swim in Any merky Water period
So you can see the shark when it comes close even worse probably
They won't actively try and attack you
@David Erickson Yea
@David Erickson A juvenile Great White Shark is gonna mind it's own business; it's unbelievably rare for an attack to happen
Good you kook stay on your period and stay home
Makes me wonder how many times I've been around one surfing Southern California breaks ".
Please do not add pecans to my brownies.
May I add a pinkie?
The shark is like Matt gaetz lurking around colleges
More like Joe Biden looking for hair to sniff.
@@wardochurchfan9166 Joe Biden's not the perv grabbing women by their crotch without their consent or admitted on television he wants to date his daughter like Trump has in the past.
@WorkBootMafia ermm..Ok...
@WorkBootMafia Or Biden just makes you so angry that he's president and you just hope he lurks around elementary schools, like you Trump, Cuomo, Giuliani, and Gaetz do when no one is around.
@WorkBootMafia ...when you should be saying that at Gaetz, Trump, Cuomo and to a mirror. Ya sheep!
Nope. They can have the ocean.
More people die from vending machines than sharks.

These are juvenile Great Whites, they generally don't bother people. It's the big ones you've got to worry about.
@David Erickson - these are babies, they won't attack anybody.
@David Erickson - that is super rare though, mostly they swim calmly around swimmers and surfers all the time and never bother them.
Great Whites generally don't start going after larger prey until they get around 10-12 feet. Once they start going for seals that's when you have to worry.
Most of the attacks on people from Great Whites are mistaken for seals, the vast major of attacks occur near seal haul outs.
A juvenile Great White hunts for fish and small rays in the shallows at that stage, they don't go after larger prey until they get older.
@David Erickson - I don't blame you, I'd have trouble swimming with a Goldfish. LOL
Put the sound of Orca's clicking in the water and the Great Whites will retreat from the area very fast! I saw a documentary on this phenomenon. Scientist and Marine Biologist don't like this because it disrupts their lively hood! They won't come close to shore fore their favorite meal.....seals.
.....as they say.... there's plenty of fish in the ocean for them to feast on! Keep our beaches safe! 🦈😲🤔🙄
the only beach i've seen in the last 12 years was in VR
I guess u could buy a drone to check on your kids or yourself if u have a phobia
Wow sharks....in the water? Say it ain't so
ok, so, is there a behaviour explanation of why they are lurking near the coast - what sense does it make from the shark perspective?
Because food is near the coast??? They live in the ocean... it is like asking why tf someone went into their own room.
The water is warmer in the shallows. Most of the sharks this guy videos observes are juvenile Great Whites under 2 metres. Less competition for food and lower risk of being food themselves. Check out the guys UA-cam Channel. Malibu Artist I think.
They look for rays
@@Fractalite oh that's a good answer I was hoping for :) 🙏😉
@@Fractalite Being food themselves??? What would eat a great white🤔
The vast majority of sharks spotted in shallow waters are juveniles, that has something to do with the reason they are there
This is straight outta Jaws
She says, I am picking the ignorance way, I am not surprised with her choice,
I wouldn't pick the ignorance way.
How can we create a shark drone guardian angel? With good data connections, and in coordination w/ lifeguards & good samartans like this, we could additionally have them run by gamers all over the world🤔. As a surfer here in Sonoma County, I would gladly pay a subscription fee!
I'm not sure it would be helpful, and it could lull surfers into a false sense of safety. I think many shark attacks occur in murky water where a drone wouldn't help.
I heard more sharks are coming towards beaches since covid started because less people at the beach and the dolphins were leaving because of less people in the water
And because the food they eat are moving closer to shore.
True, but once they realized the skyrocketing cost of living near the coast, they retreated to cheaper waters.
@@markboland8197 😂
maybe because we are over fishing the ocean ....
Vi um tubarão aqui na Lagoa do Bebedouro em Parnaíba - PI - Brasil.
Sharks should be scared of humans
Good lord. The woman has a sharp voice.
Her voice makes me wish I’d get taken by a shark !
That's exactly why I don't swim in the ocean even though its right across the street...haha
But u have more chance getting hit by a car or having a accident. But u still do both of them.
@@rhettcorbett3346 keep adding risks to your life would just increase the probability of that episode happening to you.
@@HarveySpecter0 Yeah. But there are 1,000s of other things you could die from everyday.
@@rhettcorbett3346 I agree with you but just the thought of getting ripped apart by a shark is extremely scary. I’ll take a car crash over a shark attack any day
@@WWEfantasy1 Yep. 1 of the worst ways to die.
We have a misunderstanding about fintech or travel tech, about what it really is and who it is meant to. Here is almost nothing dangerous in the water. Anybody who is ready to build a 4 propeller human transportation here is welcomed.
MalibuArtist!
Sharks don’t wake up and think mmm I’m going to eat a human today. Humans are not in sharks food chain. So just relax.
I agree but when the shark hungry,it chase anything that is smaller than it.
They’re still scary though, they can still attack you if they’re hungry
They can still attack due to intrusion to territory, but also might be very hungry.
I prefer the other option... Coz, *Ignorance is Bliss* ! or isn't it?
Funny gators are the same way..they swim & lay on the bottom in swimming areas..heck bodies been found weeks later & not much touch it ..they probably take a bite & spit us out yukee.. I'm old but we use to save a gallon urine on camping trips to mark the territory in the area to keep the animals away..it always worked cause a gallon means people in numbers which is our safety net
*wait, so the group of campers share a gallon and pee in it?*
If its yellow save it for the other fellow ?
No
Lurking in their own habitat
Exactly what I picked .. remaining hidden so as to wait in ambush ... reporters cannot help themselves.. they have to sensationalize
they never say the beach he saw the sharks at..
Ya . They never say anything pertinent just the obvious .
Old news old footage
Great white sharks are not a pet predators that title belongs to the killer whale
It’s always FLORIDA
Except it's California.
Yep. That's where they live alright. Their not land sharks. 🦈🦈🦈
Chris Lowe has a obvious agenda.
Which is not the whole truth, which he is purposely being vague about.
I also watched him in another video podcast, where he was incredibly arrogant and smug.
I don't care for the man at all.
I hate shark
Ankle deep is just for me. I don't care what he said I'm Not swimming with an Apex predator. Great white man. Remember Big Blue? How many people did she eat hmm 😒 🤔 I'll wait? I'm Not no ones breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Wedding photographer is not a job, photograph something else
They are not great white sharks. They are white sharks and they are not great until they are over 12 ft. The sharks in the surf are juvenile.
Stay out of the water
these sharks cannot be captivated or trained. they can be admired and they can be eaten. and there are mammals who can interfere with them by methods which also entertain, such as magnetic herding and and deliberately confusing singles into pairs into eachother into schools etc. which is not the same as training. none of this is valid until the drone either strikes the shark or is disabled by the shark or another predator or a competitor.
