Because I can't bind a key to push-to-talk which doesn't have a real key code. The macro key has to send a real code to the OS which mumble can pick up. I tried to have it be F13 since I read somewhere that F13 - F20 are technically defined as key codes but I couldn't make mumble pick that up so I used the only other key that I can hold down while typing/gaming without it causing any unwanted actions.
The point I was making was that the dubstep isn't an encoded electrical impulse for a note; it's what the bass does when you just surge the power. Take a powerful speaker that's only receiving power, crank the volume to max and then turn the volume down and back up in rhythm. Grats, you're a dubstep composer!
I haven't heard any dubstep that sounds like amplitude modulation of interference on an audio system. Having said that, I do prefer other areas of electronic music.
Aravind N. I meant pulling up the command console in most games. To input custom commands and look at the log of actions done by the game engine to trouble shot issues. or cheat.
Also on russian keyboard layoung, the ~ key gives a letter ё, which is constantly forgotten by people who don't care about grammar much and just use e instead... Eh whatever, these 2 letters are similar enough.
Keyboard buttons that do nothing are actually pretty useful. You can use them as hotkeys and they typically don’t interfere with anything you do. I like to use caps lock in games that use wasd for a hotkey for actions that don’t use an easy-to-reach button. I think the scroll lock key could be used for recording software, and it’s really nice that things like this still exist despite being obsolete because they can be used for purposes like the examples I gave.
When I'm using virtualisation software like VirtualBox on a desktop PC with a full keyboard, I always configure Scroll Lock as the host key. So I can still use all the modifier keys normally in the virtual machine, and when I need to force-reboot, I have those shortcuts like ScrollLock+Delete or ScrollLock+R, which don't interfere with anything else. Laptops usually don't have ScrollLock, so I tend to use the AppMenu key (the one between right Windows and Ctrl keys - although laptops usually don't have right Windows key, either) as the VM host key there, but I actually sometimes use it, so I sometimes get upset when I press it while working in a VM and it doesn't do what it normally does.
I like how you stretched out a 30 second answer to 6 minutes. Next time I see a UA-cam video answering an interesting question, it might just be better to google it.
@@enumiosu It does not have a clear answer either, he explains that it has multiple uses and tells when and where they originated from and why they exist.
Then, you'll spend the whole day trying to find the answer to the question you made rather than to the questions google think you made. And, once you find it, it'll be 37 pages of text for an answer that could be written in one sentence.
No Bruno. You could just google "Scroll Key Wikipedia", have all the information you need and be done with it in 2 minites max. Without the stupid metaphysical philosophy in the end. But thats not why we are on UA-cam. UA-cam is just for entertainment.
actually i would say dirtier than a dollar bill because toilet seat are generally very clean compared to other stuff ( despite what people may think and of course there are some exception like chem toilet at concerts :P )
A keypress sends a particular piece of data to the computer which identifies what key was pressed. It's up to the computer (read, OS) to parse this piece of data and give it the semantics that we're used to, so a keyboard manufacturer need not know what individual keys are semantically supposed to /do/, just what codes they're supposed to send.
The key doesn’t directly tell the computer what to do. It sends an instruction to the computer that says “hey! I just got pressed!” And the computer says “Ok!” Then it whispers to the operating system “I have no clue what to do now, can you give me some help?” And the operating system says “uhhhh... I don’t think that it matters... maybe just ignore it.” And the computer says “Ok!” And then nothing happens because the scroll lock key is useless. So, in summary, the keyboard company knows what the scroll lock button should tell the computer to say that it was the scroll lock key that got pressed, but not what the computer will do with it.
The least-used key is actually SysRq (System Request), not Scroll Lock. In fact, it's so rarely used that your keyboard doesn't even print it on the keycap -- it's accessed by pressing Alt-Print Screen. These days, the SysRq key is only used by the Linux kernel and Windows programming debuggers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_request
You can also use it during your computers boot phase in order to get enough time to see the shotcut to enter BIOS settings. Also, If you have ever had any Blue Screen Of Death error, you can use Pause/ break to keep it on the screen in order to take down the details.
0:35 Except the basis of Unix and it's piping of commands. There's videos from the 70's showcasing commands that will still work to this day. It's ab absolutely amazing feat of computer engineering what those guys did back then.
yeah me too, I learned it by accident on Excel, dad brought me to fix the problem of his arrow keys acting weirdly, and after thinking about it for some time I realized there is an indicator in the status bar similar to that of Num Lock, this made me remember that third "lock" kind of key on the keyboard and it all clicked in my head :D
A friend of mine is disabled and could not play his favorite video game anymore. We programmed the scroll lock key with AutoHotKey to hold and release the mouse buttons so he can now move his character and play the game again. In my case, I use it to turn on and off screen video recording, it's very convenient because when the scroll lock LED is on, it means it's recording.
Back in the day I would get people asking me where the Any Key was.. I would tell them it is the long one at the bottom that is not marked.. Was easier than saying "really, just press any key"
+Peter Wanabe Thanks Peter. I really don't enjoy listening to my own voice, but I guess that's natural. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for the feedback!
44kizza44 I know that I don't care about your childish light-up keyboard. Irrelevant comment; contribute something to technological development or kindly check out and stop draining resources.
44kizza44 I didn't realize it was for video critics only; shut up and realize that you and your opinion are only important to you. Unnecessary and unproductive criticism is a pet peeve of mine.
I guess it was done back in the days of typewriters with touch typing optimization and localization in mind. In English language, Z is the least used letter in the alphabet by far, so they've pushed it to the edge because that place is least accessible, while the Y in the place where it's easily accessible since it's used much more often. On the other hand, in some languages like German, Z is used much more often while Y is less used, so they switched it.
Well "it didn't just happen", they took the QWERTY layout, saw that the Y is in the middle of the keyboard, concluded that they rarely use it and switched places with some letter that is much more used in their language, but pushed into the corner. I'm from Serbia and we also use QWERTZ layout because in our alphabet there isn't even letter Y.
An interesting note is that Image-Line's FL Studio uses the Scroll Lock key. It is turned on automatically when you start the program and deactivated once you close it. You can switch it on and off by using a button inside FL's toolbar, affecting the timeline scrolling function. This acually used to screw up my old PC's mouse input regularly.
My new laptop has its own Scroll Lock key, but has the Home and End keys be the same as the Page Up and Page Down keys (but with pressing Fn), it's so ridiculous, so I used the SteelSeries software that came with it to remap my home and end keys onto the Scroll Lock and Pause Break keys (I know that the pause break is useful sometimes, but not as important as home/end for me)
You're not alone, many laptops don't even have the PAUSE/BREAK key. Also, even fairly modern Sony laptops had all three NumLock/CapsLock/ScrollLock LED indicators on the bezel.
I'd rather scroll lock removed than more recently the right-click menu key! I loved that key but my new keyboards don't have it, rather replaced with a Fn key. (it was the key that looked like File menu between the right ctrl and alt)
Grand Io it's handy when you're doing keyboard nav, like using the arrow keys or pressing letters searching for a file, as you can then hit the key for right click options.
+Mr Hand, that depends on your keyboard layout, afaik. US layouts rarely if ever had a right windows button but many European layouts still have it. Probably different for laptops, though, as these often have modified keyboards. Edit: Also, on my roccat (us layout) I don't have a right windows button but I have both FN and menu keys between right alt and right control.
When I was a kid I didn't know English but a lot of the software and games available those days were in English. I figured out what the word "key" was, but couldn't figure out what "any" meant and I remember actually searching for an "any" key on my keyboard. XD
Isn't its location a little bit poor for that? I use my mouse four for discord ans TS, and mouse 5 for in-game ptt, so that I can have my hands on the mouse and 1234qweasd keys at all times.
By the end of this video I found myself conforting my Scroll lock button telling it that everything is ok and I will never forget about it. First time I feel emotional about a key on my keyboard...
A.C. Jelly the Any Key is always mapped on every single key you have by the programmers who made it. It used to be there then they put the function on every key and removed the Any Key.
Leafer Jack Doesn't pretty much every modern non-handheld console allow you to attach a standard USB keyboard anyway? Hell, the first to allow it was the PS2. Confusingly.
@@KofolaDealer It toggles the text input from inserting text to replacing it. If, when you move your input cursor into the middle of a word/sentence, you want to insert new text, you will toggle the text cursor to insert mode. You will see a line, and new letters will be inserted where the line is. If, when you move your input cursor to the middle of a word/sentence, you want to replace the text, you will toggle the cursor to replace mode. The vertical line will change to a box or an underline character. This means that when you type new characters, the old character that is currently being underlined will be deleted and replaced with the character you just typed. When you're typing new text at the end of a text document, and there is no text ahead of the cursor, there is no functional difference between them. Better? Go test it out in notepad or something.
I know that Scroll Lock has a function at least in Excel: when it's OFF the arrow keys move you around the cells; and when it's active using the arrows will pad the entire spreadsheet. Nice.
I remember my first pc was windows xp man going on the internet was fucking hard it always tells me that the page froze and I had to wait so fucking long to get to a page
Seeing how there's the page up and page down keys. The scroll lock is just there as a space occupier. I've yet to press the pause and home key except when I'm cleaning my keyboard
Print screen is how you take screenshots, and insert is like a dedicated ctrl+z button. The others aren't used very frequently, but the other two are definitely useful.
I had never pressed that key on my k120 either until I watched this. And mine does light up but yeah it does nothing. Such a waste of good Leds for nothing. Think about it every keyboard in the world has one led for that key that probably never has to light up!

the real question is: who the fuck thought caps-lock was a good idea? think about it, how often have you really used it vs how often you get hindered by it.
Wrong, the windows key does have 2 useful functions. 1.) it's required to open the "run" box which can be used to execute files, some of which are deeply hidden in the OS. 2.) if your mouse glitches out/has issues you can access anything with arrows and enter key. No other way to bring up the start menu without it.

Symix I have a Mac, because i like the design of my Macbook Air, and the 12 Hour Battery Life. A friend has a Ultrabook with similar Specs and a similar Price, but his Battery runs out after 6-9 Hours. And for a Laptop i don't need much Power. I need reliability and Battery life. I get both from my Mac. And i really like how i can unlock the Mac with my Apple Watch. And the Apple Watch with my iPhone. And share Clipboard from my Mac with my iPad and my iPhone. (Very good if you have the Password Manager on the Mac) And open a Webpage open on my iPhone with one click in the Dock on my Mac. There are still some things a Mac is better than a Windows Laptop. (Not to say i don't like my Windows PC. It is great for Gaming.)

I do! i pushed it and it brought great joy when i saw the LED light up. Then i turned it off and moved on. QC test for KB i guess :D . I did get a warm feeling though.. awww
When I was really young, I heard from everyone that the scroll lock key did something really dangerous that would irreversibly screw up your computer. Every time I'd accidentally press it, I'd have a mini heart attack. Never knew what it did, but I steadily developed a legitimate phobia of that damn thing.
You were cheated. Even if you never use the button for it's intended use, it should be there. Most OSes allow you to remap the buttons for other purposes. Having the scroll lock and pause/break keys present allows you to program them for other purposes.
You know the right part of the keyboard? With the arrows and numbers? Yeah, for microsoft word, number lock for the numbers and scroll lock to scroll with the arrows. Simple. Idk, works with me. I use it all the time.
Damn that ending was deep. I nearly cried at the metaphor of the scroll lock having 5 more minutes in the sun light, and then I remembered what the video was on and felt like an idiot.
I love mine as well. I bound Caps Lock for CTRL and CTRL for Command, as I use a Mac. I have 3 of which 2 of them are from 92 and 93 (PS/2) and the oldest is from 89 (DIN connector). And all in my locale too, which are kinda rare.
ui_wizard nice! I only have one, the 1391401, from '89. It uses the DIN connector as well, so I have to use three cables to use it :P I've heard the older Model F has full NKRO, whereas the M only has 2KRO. I want one so bad 😢 What locale are you in? And Seriously, why do you even use caps lock?! Fuck caps lock.
MamboBean I don't use Caps Lock, that's why I bound it to be CTRL instead. It's true Model F is NKRO, because they use capacitive buckling springs. But they are expensive as hell. My locale is Danish ISO, on top of that I also got German ISO keys as well as old Function buttons for the oldest M. Mine are: 2x 1391407 (1991, 1992)-apparently got that wrong; and the 1986/88 (also apparently got that wrong since the last number is hard to read) is 1389971.
Jonathan Saunders Thats what I can understand. But I can't understand why they put it in nowdays, in the past okay - but today it's all about profit, why waste the money?! Thats what I don't get
Felix Maus Well, I can't really answer this question as I do not manufacture keyboards, but they might be figuring that someone, somewhere, would want that key there, so they shouldn't make its exclusion as a reason for that person not to buy it. And, it's really not that expensive anyway.
+Jonathan Saaunders Why not replace it with another key though (I know you don't know how to answer this, I'd have to ask the actual company - still :P)
People don't use scroll lock? I've had this program that counts my keystrokes for 8 years now (holy shit, it's been that long?) every time i get a new pc, i just reinstall it, log in, and I have my old data. I don't even think that it is updated or offered any more, because i couldn't find the original website whenever i just looked, but I just put it on my newer PCs, and log back in, keeping all of my data. Well anyways, i have 108,643,487 keystrokes, and I use SclLk more than the NumLk, Ins, home, end, page up, page down, print, pause/break, the / key on my numpad (i never use that one, i use the one that is beside of my Rshift key), and the - key on my numpad (again, i use the one that is between my 0 and = keys). My most used keys are W, A, S, D, shift, space, ctrl, F, R, E, Q, V, caps lock, the numbers (the ones above your letters, not the number pad) and just keys in general that you would use for gaming. The ones that currently have the most though are Space and W, Both having a few million presses each.

Kinda like switched controllers in one of MGS's missions.
U gotta have that scroll lock off to unlock that Ability scroll :)
METAKU (Metal Otaku) | Anime + Metal! That would be awesome!!! Maybe there are some games like that, we just haven't found the Easter Egg yet! :D
Bind it to mute sound and minimize everything to desktop for, ahem, reasons.
Because ALT-F4 is so overrated.
Alt+F4 versus one button that allows you to re-open the program? Overrated af
I use it for push-to-talk in mumble. Well, the key code, not the physical key; I mapped it to a macro key that I can reach with my left pinkie.
Kiwii Try the META key. That's the button to the left of RghtCtrl. It has no use in games so will be fine to use. Or just disable push-to-talk like me
Nobody can play my elder scrolls games when I press this key.
wartem lmao
I used to lock my scrolls like you..
... but then I took an arrow to the key.
Do you get to the cloud district very often?
lol nice
I use the scroll lock key almost every day for modding purposes.
Ok
Maximumus thanks
Makes for a great Compose Key
sup maximus, how is the costume going?
Maxim Drake dku use wursthzck client ... for kc i tried it before got banned never gonna use hax again
"kids these days will never experience the robotic sound of dial up."
yes, they will. the modern version is known as "dubstep".
God, friggin' dubstep. It's LITERALLY just what happens when you pump a fuckload of electricity into a speaker. *waves cane *
The point I was making was that the dubstep isn't an encoded electrical impulse for a note; it's what the bass does when you just surge the power. Take a powerful speaker that's only receiving power, crank the volume to max and then turn the volume down and back up in rhythm. Grats, you're a dubstep composer!
,,but dopstep is ded"
Martin Macura maybe as a specific genre, but the grating, obnoxious sounds involved are as prevalent as ever.
I haven't heard any dubstep that sounds like amplitude modulation of interference on an audio system. Having said that, I do prefer other areas of electronic music.
Tilde is still used...Its like the primary key used in games for the console.
Eh whatever, these 2 letters are similar enough.
and it's also used often after online messages~~
And also if you habla español.
hold alt and press 164 or 165 on your numpad for those letters ---> ñ Ñ
I thought the Pause/Break button is more mysterious than Scroll Lock...
It's used in coding, though now it's pretty outdated.
Same. Especially when they zoomed into that area.
When a command prompt (or similar) command is running the Pause/Break key just freezes the command prompt
Some old DOS games use it as an actual pause button.
Old PC games in general.
I use it for two things:
If I lose mouse when using Microsoft Excel
To make keyboard light disco cooler :D
ohoh sa ka siin
d3max ma olen ka üllatunud
I use if for the 2nd reason
Cᴀᴢᴏᴏsʜ same.
Did you know Ctrl+W combination opens special features in UA-cam?
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
hehe
Works better if you hold the combination for a second or two IIRC.
another way is to click the shut down button
Oh god, I considered myself tech-savvy until I did this.
how can someone make a video about a key on a keyboard so mystical and uplifting with music xD
I'd like to see someone make a video about the scroll lock using some spooky music. It would turn everything around...
I choose undrscore
Maybe some Tool music? Idk... I'd like to see someone do it
I like how you stretched out a 30 second answer to 6 minutes. Next time I see a UA-cam video answering an interesting question, it might just be better to google it.
Lilith does stuff This video mostly says where and when it’s originated from. Even in the end it doesn’t give a clear answer lol.
Basically it has no use.
I am going to give that key a kiss.
I just gave that key a kiss.
*Gets sick because the keyboard is dirtier than a toilet seat*
actually i would say dirtier than a dollar bill because toilet seat are generally very clean compared to other stuff ( despite what people may think and of course there are some exception like chem toilet at concerts :P )
how the hell did a keyboard company put a scroll lock key on their keyboards if they didn' t know what it did?
Scott Stickler tradition and it was just what everyone was doing back then so they did it too
A keypress sends a particular piece of data to the computer which identifies what key was pressed. It's up to the computer (read, OS) to parse this piece of data and give it the semantics that we're used to, so a keyboard manufacturer need not know what individual keys are semantically supposed to /do/, just what codes they're supposed to send.
everyone does it why not??
I just wanted to add this, If your competitor has one, why don't YOU have one?
The key doesn’t directly tell the computer what to do. It sends an instruction to the computer that says “hey! I just got pressed!” And the computer says “Ok!” Then it whispers to the operating system “I have no clue what to do now, can you give me some help?” And the operating system says “uhhhh... I don’t think that it matters... maybe just ignore it.” And the computer says “Ok!” And then nothing happens because the scroll lock key is useless.
So, in summary, the keyboard company knows what the scroll lock button should tell the computer to say that it was the scroll lock key that got pressed, but not what the computer will do with it.
floppy disks?? u mean save icons???
Remember the Zip Drive?
EMPiiRE Minidisc was superior.
@somiron kundu
I'm 18 years old and I can only vaguely describe its purpose. Bruh
***** the fact that u use them is the bigger problem here .. xDDD
Legit TBA you're kidding
FL Studio uses "Scroll Lock" to enable/disable scrolling playlist. Another use - KVM-switch for 2 PC's.
Half-Life 2 isn't obsolete yet, but it's only 13 years old...
xylophone Hl2 was also years ahead of its time.
xylophone Games usually don't become obsolete as long as they hold their own, in the same way that older movies, music, and art are still good today.
And it supports Pause/Break key! :D
holy shit i realised i was only 2 when it came out
a video game a book a movie or a song can never become obsolete.
It's 3 A.M. I have a major test tomorrow, and I'm watching videos about the depressing nature of a computer key.
It actually still is printed on my Keyboard, interesting!
its on my keyboard too under prt scr
Same here, on an Acer laptop.
i cant forget the scroll lock cuz it enables/disables the backlight in my keyboard

Mine is FN+a number. Black widow chroma ftw.
mine just has a backlight button lol
Paint.NET uses scroll lock. I am one of few people who actually uses scroll lock, it's good for pixel by pixel scrolling
never knew that about paint.net, thanks for it
paint dot net is an amazing simple image editor, i love it
i was expecting an online paint version, yet i get a warren paint selling company lol. try out weavesilk (dot) com

What about the Pause/Break key? I never use that one
Nacho Garcia It's used in coding mate :)
Yeah I always use in Python
You can also use it during your computers boot phase in order to get enough time to see the shotcut to enter BIOS settings. Also, If you have ever had any Blue Screen Of Death error, you can use Pause/ break to keep it on the screen in order to take down the details.
AND some people use it to pause games, like StarCraft 2.
+Nitofex why not the escape key
WHAT DOES THE CAPS LOCK KEY DO ?
911gp lol
Enables/disables call of duty kid mode
nice one :)
Are you for real?
yes of course
0:35 Except the basis of Unix and it's piping of commands. There's videos from the 70's showcasing commands that will still work to this day. It's ab absolutely amazing feat of computer engineering what those guys did back then.
I'm kinda proud I knew what scroll lock does
yeah me too, I learned it by accident on Excel, dad brought me to fix the problem of his arrow keys acting weirdly, and after thinking about it for some time I realized there is an indicator in the status bar similar to that of Num Lock, this made me remember that third "lock" kind of key on the keyboard and it all clicked in my head :D
elenaki zou lol same
A friend of mine is disabled and could not play his favorite video game anymore. We programmed the scroll lock key with AutoHotKey to hold and release the mouse buttons so he can now move his character and play the game again.
In my case, I use it to turn on and off screen video recording, it's very convenient because when the scroll lock LED is on, it means it's recording.
I'm using scroll lock for recording too, pause button to save previous 2mins
My computer is telling me to Press Any Key...
Anyone knows where to find the Any key?
U Wot M8 toenail
I'm so sorry man... I have no idea what came over me... I lost ctrl completely....
Back in the day I would get people asking me where the Any Key was.. I would tell them it is the long one at the bottom that is not marked.. Was easier than saying "really, just press any key"
press the key on your monitor, or better, the one on your PC case.
You see that button on your computer? The one you push to turn it on. Yeah, that's the Any Key. Hold it to make that thing go away.
everytime you press the button someone somewhere stops scrolling
What is your profile picture? I need the source for my science homework.
They see me scrollin' They Hatin'....
jokes on you i dont have a scroll lock key
same
Ditto
i dont have one either
I always wondered what the scroll lock's purpose was. I guess I don't have to worry about it anymore! Thanks for the video.
Very well done. And guess what, your voice is easy and enjoyable to listen to. Thanks, a great and informative video!!
+Peter Wanabe Thanks Peter. I really don't enjoy listening to my own voice, but I guess that's natural. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for the feedback!

I know exactly what my scroll lock key does. It makes my keyboard glow.
Irrelevant video.
I would give more upvotes, but buy a backlit keyboard.
44kizza44 I know that I don't care about your childish light-up keyboard.
Irrelevant comment; contribute something to technological development or kindly check out and stop draining resources.
R Stewart What have you contributed to technological development? I didn't realise UA-cam was for tech-geeks only?
Would love to but unfortunately there's better uses for the money i have...
44kizza44 I didn't realize it was for video critics only; shut up and realize that you and your opinion are only important to you. Unnecessary and unproductive criticism is a pet peeve of mine.
I'm only interested because in the thumbnail (unless you change it) I can't see the actual key.
...But if you take a closer look, the arrow is pointing right at it :)
Nafi Napkin I believe it's supposed to be very subtle clickbait but still identifiable
Nafi Napkin how is it clickbait lmao
Z and Y switched?
What's it for?
German keyboard.
DINO92AVFC Well the keyboard's layout is based on the typewriter. But it happened so that German typewriters had a QWERTZ layout.
+sexy Bismarck a few weeks ago i bought a new keyboard with apperantly a azerty, went back to the store, asked a refund and bought an qwerty haha
My laptop doesn't have a scroll lock button on the keyboard. Well, I guess it's a goodbye to our fellow scroll lock.
the reason is only that 2 keys above 3 key collums wouldnt look nice. so they kept it in place
What are you using to edit your videos?
The scroll lock key
Wow, such a funny joke.
Actually not.
Too soon...?
What is too soon.
The video was edited in VideoPad
I use the scroll lock when my face gets slammed into the keyboard when i get in trouble
An interesting note is that Image-Line's FL Studio uses the Scroll Lock key. It is turned on automatically when you start the program and deactivated once you close it. You can switch it on and off by using a button inside FL's toolbar, affecting the timeline scrolling function. This acually used to screw up my old PC's mouse input regularly.
my new laptop doesn't have scroll lock key.
You're missing out, big time
Return it, quickly.
Neither does mine.
I'd rather scroll lock removed than more recently the right-click menu key! I loved that key but my new keyboards don't have it, rather replaced with a Fn key.
(it was the key that looked like File menu between the right ctrl and alt)
That key isn't useful. I've never used it and all the keyboards I've owned have it.
Grand Io it's handy when you're doing keyboard nav, like using the arrow keys or pressing letters searching for a file, as you can then hit the key for right click options.
I just realised I don't have one anymore, how the fuck did this happen?
+Mr Hand, that depends on your keyboard layout, afaik. US layouts rarely if ever had a right windows button but many European layouts still have it. Probably different for laptops, though, as these often have modified keyboards.
Edit: Also, on my roccat (us layout) I don't have a right windows button but I have both FN and menu keys between right alt and right control.
>right alt
>not owning a keyboard with alt GR
way to make me have emotions for a vestigial organ.
This video makes me kind of sad. Like thinking of a friend you once had.
You're not crying over a keyboard key are you?
Can you help me find the "Any Key" i could never find it.
CafeNightster و nice joke. ¬!
you're out of luck, the "any key" got lost in time
When I was a kid I didn't know English but a lot of the software and games available those days were in English. I figured out what the word "key" was, but couldn't figure out what "any" meant and I remember actually searching for an "any" key on my keyboard. XD
press alt and f4 at the same time and you will find the any key
I use it for PTT in Teamspeak, discord and common games. (Rebind mouse 5 to scroll lock for convenience)
Isn't its location a little bit poor for that? I use my mouse four for discord ans TS, and mouse 5 for in-game ptt, so that I can have my hands on the mouse and 1234qweasd keys at all times.
Column01 ew wtf teamspeak
Personnaly I use voice activation and I use scroll lock to mute my mic this way I can know if my mic is muted if the LED of scroll lock is on or not

By the end of this video I found myself conforting my Scroll lock button telling it that everything is ok and I will never forget about it. First time I feel emotional about a key on my keyboard...
who else pressed scroll lock as soon as he said it?
Where's the Any Key?
My PC wants me to press it. I'm so confused.
A.C. Jelly the Any Key is always mapped on every single key you have by the programmers who made it. It used to be there then they put the function on every key and removed the Any Key.
Order some TAB in the meantime.

Symix ok, but before that I think I should gas all of my kinds. good idea or not?
Very good indeed ..
Leafer Jack Great. Do that humanity will thank you.
Leafer Jack Doesn't pretty much every modern non-handheld console allow you to attach a standard USB keyboard anyway? Hell, the first to allow it was the PS2. Confusingly.
pixel girl I do not own a console but I'm pretty sure that's not so simple. Otherwise there wouldn't be mouse and keyboard adapters for ps3/4
My keyboard takes advantage of Scrolllock key. It turns the keyboard backlight on or off. :D
Peter M lucky you i still use a 2003 keyboard and i mastered it xD
Just delete the windows folder to access the locked features.
thanks it tottaly workd :D
wtf, i did and now my computer is not starting anymore. why??
Lol your joking right ? xD
Instructions too clear, Windows not booting.
CONGRATS! you made a single key on the keyboard have such a deep meaning with that analogy!
The most evil keyboard key ever is...
INSERT !!!
I'll second that.
No, it is 1 key size backspaces and short enter keys
@@xXx_Oshino_xXx Only on the special keyboards that have those keys. Insert is pretty much standard on most keyboard sizes.
What does it do?
You Sound Like The Guy From Behind The Meme.

Melk Addition What are you talking about? Its still there when you go to his channel

It locks the scroll function
FBI Agent 911 this is probably a joke so I’m not gonna get annoyed
I know that Scroll Lock has a function at least in Excel: when it's OFF the arrow keys move you around the cells; and when it's active using the arrows will pad the entire spreadsheet. Nice.
I remember my first pc was windows xp man going on the internet was fucking hard it always tells me that the page froze and I had to wait so fucking long to get to a page
Oh, you are so special. Windows XP? Internet was slow? Wow, very nostalgic. FU
zawzero ok what's your problem wtf special why should I feel special it's just the experience I had with my pc by the way fuck off
blackaymon
That was like yesterday.
zawzero I am in Germany so the time is different right now it's 22:23
blackaymon Ach krass
Seeing how there's the page up and page down keys. The scroll lock is just there as a space occupier. I've yet to press the pause and home key except when I'm cleaning my keyboard
or the end key either
So just because you do not use your computer to the full extent means they are useless? What a logic.
I forgot that scroll lock, print screen, insert, pause break, end and home existed on my keyboard till I seen this video.
Print screen is how you take screenshots, and insert is like a dedicated ctrl+z button. The others aren't used very frequently, but the other two are definitely useful.
I was thinking ctrl V, sorry.

I have the same Logitech K120 Keyboard, My Scroll Lock LED does not light up. Can I return it now? lol.
Me too, lol. Mine works.
Wait until some keys stop working and then you can return it and say you are only returning because of the scroll lock light
I had never pressed that key on my k120 either until I watched this. And mine does light up but yeah it does nothing. Such a waste of good Leds for nothing. Think about it every keyboard in the world has one led for that key that probably never has to light up!
+Charlymander little LED on the conveyor belt "I'm being useful, I'm being useful, I'm being useful" - machine pushes it into Scroll-Lock-Slot "dammit"
the real question is: who the fuck thought caps-lock was a good idea? think about it, how often have you really used it vs how often you get hindered by it.
it is. you use it to turn on caps... if you want to USE CAPS WITHOUT HOLDING SHIFT FOR ANNOYING PEOPLE.
Ward Huyskes caps lock is useful, but not at that big size.
Ward Huyskes its very useful for programming
***** I can believe that. But still, they should have not given it such a prominent place on the keyboard.
It's useful for coding.

Forget about the scroll lock what about the windows key it's only purpose I can think of for that is to end kill streaks when accidently hit.
it opens start menu
Press windows key yourself.
Guys...... Lettuce was joking
windowskey + d = minimizes all windows
do it again and all reopen again
I do know, what Scrolllock does. And I miss it on my Mac.
why the fuck you have mac?
Symix chill out you've been calling alot of people Idiots and Morons its rude
and also he has his own opinion, dont judge someone because he has a mac
Stronk Slav Brotherhood opinion? Opinion about what? That mac is faster? You can build pc thats same speed as mac for 300-400 dollars... and mac is like 1200 dollars... "opinion" is very needed in this situation
It is great for Gaming.)
its there to turn my backlight on and off
As a biologist, computer nerd, and old fart I find the idea that the scroll lock key may end up an exaptation rather fascinating. I may need to share this with my students. Thanks!
My laptop keyboard has no Scroll Lock, Pause/Break key. Nor does it have "right click show menu" key. The lack of the last annoys me a lot.
Sometimes you can setup the track pad so tapping in one corner shows the popup menu.
My chromebook dosent even have caps lock and the keyborad short cut dosent work you have to double tap shift
I have a good use for it!: when it is not active you can scroll up and down. When it is active you can scroll left amd right! Good idea? Let me know!
its like that already.. fucking moron
Symix who shoved a stake up your ass? I've seen at least 3 comments from you calling people idiots for not being omniscient.
Izual0Zephyr the symix dude probably didn't get enough attention from his parents so now he's trying to get some in the Internet by typing hate comments lmao
My keyboard does not have a scroll lock key x3
...so the part about "look, it's on your keyboard" was a bit awkward :P
FlutterBug I'm a mac user, so i agree lol
I do! i pushed it and it brought great joy when i saw the LED light up. Then i turned it off and moved on. QC test for KB i guess :D . I did get a warm feeling though.. awww
Yep the windows laptop I am using right now doesn't have a scroll lock key :)
Mine doesn't either (Logitech K230). Now I'm feeling I'm missing something important in my life.
When I was really young, I heard from everyone that the scroll lock key did something really dangerous that would irreversibly screw up your computer. Every time I'd accidentally press it, I'd have a mini heart attack. Never knew what it did, but I steadily developed a legitimate phobia of that damn thing.
dont seem to have one of those.....first time ive looked lol
I would swap my num/lock key for one but I don't have one of those either...I feel cheated :-(
I'm using a pc I built but with a dell keyboard, kind of like it because of its key stroke..realy soft but positive.
I have a laptop with no scr lk too but that shortcut doesn't work... how do you do it?
You were cheated. Even if you never use the button for it's intended use, it should be there. Most OSes allow you to remap the buttons for other purposes. Having the scroll lock and pause/break keys present allows you to program them for other purposes.
You know the right part of the keyboard? With the arrows and numbers? Yeah, for microsoft word, number lock for the numbers and scroll lock to scroll with the arrows. Simple. Idk, works with me. I use it all the time.
3:06 why are the Y and Z keys swapped?
They are not swapped, this is another Keyboard layout. Here in Germany we use QWERTZ layout.
Oh right, German...
Zwei zeal zonda zoda zachine! Acht!
That one looks Serbian/Croatian because of the Š Đ Ž Č & Ć characters on it. I use Serbian keyboard and it's QWERTZ.
Damn that ending was deep. I nearly cried at the metaphor of the scroll lock having 5 more minutes in the sun light, and then I remembered what the video was on and felt like an idiot.
I use an IBM Model M, which doesn't have a Windows key. So I bound scroll lock to "Windows".
It uses the DIN connector as well, so I have to use three cables to use it :P
I've heard the older Model F has full NKRO, whereas the M only has 2KRO. I want one so bad 😢
What locale are you in? And Seriously, why do you even use caps lock?! Fuck caps lock.
MamboBean I don't use Caps Lock, that's why I bound it to be CTRL instead.
It's true Model F is NKRO, because they use capacitive buckling springs. But they are expensive as hell.
My locale is Danish ISO, on top of that I also got German ISO keys as well as old Function buttons for the oldest M.
Mine are: 2x 1391407 (1991, 1992)-apparently got that wrong; and the 1986/88 (also apparently got that wrong since the last number is hard to read) is 1389971.
ui_wizard oh my bad. Didn't notice you actually don't use caps :P
Isn't it stupid to put the Scroll lock to new keyboards? I mean it cost materiel and money and has no use. Why would a company do it?!
Because "the others had it, so [they] put it in."
Jonathan Saunders
Thats what I can understand.
Jonathan Saunders
Yeah.. Maybe there is a reason that we don't know or understand :P
108m keystrokes? well you dont use pc much.
so what do you use it for
probably for voice chat
send me your logs please >:D
