WARNING About WINX DVD Ripper Platinum

  • I normally don’t do videos about software however I discovered a problem with the program WINX DVD Ripper Platinum that most people are not aware of. I contacted the software developer and they didn’t want to take any responsibility. I believe they are also not aware of this problem but they are not willing to look into it which leads me to this video.
    ============
    ============
    (Sorry to interrupt but since posting the video in 2020 many have asked me for an alternative DVD ripper that can rip to 5.1 and do a great job. I personally use WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro which is a fantastic alternative. You can find it here: tinyurl.com/DV... (this is an affiliate link and I do earn a small commission if you purchase through this link.)
    ============
    ============
    In the video I will show you how the program does not properly rip surround sound leaving with you a false 6 channel soundtrack that is actually just a 2 channel stereo track. Sure in the properties of the file it will say 6 channels but when I import it into both Adobe Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve it clearly shows this is not true.
    Most people will rip their DVD’s, most likely for the purpose of viewing their movies through a media server, and think that the 5.1 surround sound was also ripped. They will trust program and never do what I did which was to import it into a video editor and view the channels. It is important that you too do what I did to see if you receive the same problem. If yes, then contact the software company to let them know. The more users who do so will force the company to take this issue seriously and fix it.

      @@hochhasd1 If it was ripped with WINX then it ripped it into two channels due to the issue I mentioned. Otherwise, depending on the TV series, it most likely was in stereo when it originally broadcast. Many older TV series didn't broadcast in surround. Newer shows, and especially streaming, do broadcast in surround.

    Thank you for sharing this. I do have hope that WinX DVD Ripper get it's software fixed. It's a great easy program to use. But having it work correctly is the biggest deal. Manny of us have tons of DVDs and VHS movies we've bought over the years, but have needed a cost effective way to still see many of these on digital devices. Thanks again and I hope they listen and do also encourage any one else to contact the software manufacturer if they have any issues that need corrected also. Sinergy is how things will get better, or it will spawn a new product to come to market that does work as the consumer needs it too.

      Are you sure you are getting true 5.1 as demonstrated in my video? From recent comments, as well as comments from other videos I've seen recently about WinX from others, it seems people are still having this problem. Some are saying WinX told them their program is not capable of outputting to true 5.1. They even followed my video and used DaVinci Resolve to see for themselves if they were getting proper 6 channels and found they were not. All the channels get combined into 2 and the rest of the channels are left empty as seen in my video. As I say in the video WinX DVD told me 3 years ago they never claimed it did output to 5.1 channels and it seems they still haven't added this option. They just need to be more clear on their website so people know before buying. If they don't need 5.1 then it's a fine program that will get the job done well.

    Great consumer service Mike!!! In Yesteryear, companies made things right, when errored to the customer, now it's harder to find companies like that. Consumers word of mouth was a powerful tool but the weird part is that today it's easier to voice problems and reach more people and is rarely seen. I seen someone else here a couple days ago and said audio problem still exists. I wondered what version you had for those that see this maybe in 6 months and WinX finally got around to fixing it. As for me, they lost my purchase. I am old school and will not award a company or branch that doesn't own up to proof of a problem. Other viewers see it, but a software developer can't detect it like everyday people do, maybe they don't know what they are doing. I may write them to let them know that I heard of a problem with their surround sound file that was brought to their attention almost 6 months ago and there still isn't witness of a corrected version. Thanks Mike. To Everyone, be like Mike and attempt to work it out with the manufacturer and then expose it to the public if they wont fix, deny, etc....

    I just tested this with "DaVinci Resolve" and an mp4 generated by "WinX DVD ripper for Mac version 6.8.2". I get the 5.1 channels either with 6ch or DTS. However I do not have the equipment that can play these files on my home theater speakers.
    The audio signals won't pass through a TOSLINK (you get PCM instead) and my audio amplifier does not have an HDMI port input (only TOSLINKS).
    Finally my UB9000 bluray player (hard-wired to the amplifier) will not play correctly mp4 files with "ACC-LC 5.1" audio (see the AAC standard) using DLNA. I get stereo only.

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  27 днів тому

      As demonstrated in my video WinX does create 6 channels but it puts all the audio into two channels only and leaves the rest empty. So when you play it back on any device, including 5.1 and DTS, you will only play as stereo. That is the big problem with the software and why I made this video.

    @MikeMBurke Thanks for this video. I was researching for a while and was almost going to go ahead with Winx, I'm please you did this and articulated everything as you have in this video. I bought Wonderfox from the link just yesterday, so I hope you got something from that too. I'm wondering, before I start ripping my collection, is there such thing as a checklist guide or could you help me identify what I need in order to get the best results from varying DVDs?

    • @NeilDnb
      @NeilDnb 8 місяців тому

      As of present, I'm using the info on the DVDs as a guide.
      So if it says PAL, I choose PAL.
      If it supports 5.1 sound I check that in wonderfox too.
      If its NTSC or PAL I would need to check 'Deinterlace' in addition to selecting PAL or NTSC.
      Note - would this mean frame rate is automatically set when selecting PAL or NTSC or do I need to select this too
      (NTSC - 29.97 PAL - 25 FPS)
      I try my best to test before I start going through a long process, sorry to hear you went through 600+ DVDs before you noticed that 5.1 sound wasn't being ripped. So I'm asking this just incase there's anything else I missed out, before I start ripping my collection. I just bought x2 4TB drives so ideally I'd like to retain as much quality as possible when ripping to MP4, space isn't an issue for me.
      If you can spare a moment to suggest a few things to keep in mind, that'd be really great. Thanks again for the video, it's working well so far!

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  8 місяців тому

      You're welcome and thank you for getting it through my affiliate link! The program is pretty straight forward. You can change settings according to your needs. For example you can choose to rip all the language tracks, just the ones you need or none of them. I was able to use it the first time without instructions. I always set it to high quality as well and the results were always great. If you are going to rip any DVD that is a TV series or made for TV movie be sure to click on deinterlace in your settings. If you don't there will be artifacts in the videos. Only do this for TV related content. Be sure it's off for theatrical films. Otherwise just check your settings to make sure it's what you want and rip. It's pretty simple. After my bad experience with WINX I always made sure 5.1 was selected. I found it to be very simple. I ripped everything to MP4 at the highest setting. I always choose 5.1 and the MP4 came to about 4.3 to 4.5 GB on average.

    • @NeilDnb
      @NeilDnb 8 місяців тому +1

      @@MikeMBurke Thanks Mike, appreciate your points and for making this video as I was considering Winx. I guess the best way for me would be to do a short test for older DVD recordings just to check it it needs to be deinterlaced. I were wondering if I could get all the info I need from the back of the DVD, so I can get a production without needing to test them all as I go. So if it says PAL and it's made for TV, I would set it to deinterlace, but I suppose what I'm realising is that not all PAL recordings necessarily need to be deinterlaced. I guess if I keep 5.1 selected and some happen to be stereo, it won't affect the output quality anyway, so that's a good shout too. Cheers!
      .

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  8 місяців тому

      @@NeilDnb You're welcome! One thing you can do, if you are not sure if the movie was a made for TV movie, is to look it up on IMDB.com. Any non-TV Hollywood film won't need to be deinterlaced. It's only films and TV shows that were on television because they were interlaced in order to be broadcast over TV. Hollywood films made for the theaters and later released on VHS and DVD were never interlaced for those formats.

    On your recommendation I installed Wonderfox DVD Ripper today and tested it by ripping a music concert DVD. All 6 channels were extracted OK but when I play the ripped video back on my TV/AV receiver, the main vocals do not appear on the centre channel, but on front left and front right.
    If I play the original DVD, the main vocals do appear on the centre channel as expected.

      @MikeMBurke  3 роки тому +1

      I don't know Lew. As you saw in my video I showed the waveforms from Wonderfox and everything is where it's suppose to be compared to WinX. It could be because your doing a music concert DVD. It could be related to the codec they used when the DVD was originally created. Basically it sends mixed signals(so to speak) to the modern day software. Most likely concert DVD was not made with the same standards as a film would be. Perhaps try a movie to see how that works out to see if it's the DVD or the software. I am not an expert with the software. I just know Wonderfox worked great for me with no issues. Best of luck

      @@MikeMBurke Mike, I've done some further investigating and it turns out that the DVD's I've been trying to rip don't have 6 discrete channels as in DD 5.1, but only 2 audio tracks. My mistake was to try and extract 6 channels that didn't actually exist.
      Ripping with WinX results in 2 audio channels that when played back with the correct decoder (Pro Logic II) sounds exactly the same as the original DVD. Not sure if this is different to your problem.

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  3 роки тому

      @@lewminati139 My problem was not related to yours. I was ripping DVD's that had true 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtracks and as shown in the video WINX, even with the 5.1 setting, chosen, was not properly creating a 5.1 audio track. It was down converting into 2. Many others have also confirmed this to be happening to them as well so it is a software issue. In your case you can't convert a 2 channel stereo audio tracking into 5.1 or any surround sound as the info to create it is not there. If you were to do a film that is 5.1 then you might run into problems with WINX unless they have addressed the issue in a recent update.

      If you just want a simple playable DVD you can drag and drop it onto the disc in Windows and burn it. Nothing special is needed. If you want menus like a Hollywood DVD that is more complicated and my best suggestion is to search UA-cam for videos that show you software others are using and how they do it. I use professional software because my DVD and blu ray's are sold online in a professional manner and what I use is very complicated and it would take too long for me to explain how I do it. There are more consumer based software out there that you can try but search UA-cam so you can get ideas to find what is best for you. Best of luck.

      You'll need to do your research regarding that drive and LIbreDrive. As I said before I am not an expert in this and it's been three years. That drive works for me and it had LibreDrive installed when I purchased it three years ago and I never had any issues with it. You need do your research and search UA-cam for videos and online forums to learn how to get it set up and working. Perhaps you need to go through flashing the drive to get LibreDrive on it where as the one I purchased already had it built in. What I do know is that not all drives can have LibreDrive but this model can. Again, I am not an expert with these drives and my video is all about how WinX DVD Ripper deceived people into believing it can rip into 5.1 surround when it can't. It's not about how to rip drives or any of that. I recommended WonderFox because it worked perfectly for me and is a good alternative to WinX if want to rip your DVD's into files with 5.1 surround. You will need to seek out videos from people who specifically talk about this particular drive and LibreDrive as they are more informed on it and the process you may need to go through to get LibreDrive on it if it's not there yet.

    Another problem with this software is it does not rip DVD to mp4 with an optional subtitle. If you choose to add the subtitle that's on the DVD it will burn the subtitle into the picture. In other words you won't have the option to turn it on and off. One of the employees from the software company answered this question posted on a major geeks forum. It will do it if you burn an iso file to your computer but that's not helpful if your media streaming software doesn't play iso files the way a vlc player can. My tv won't play iso files but will play mp4 no problem.

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately MP4's don't have the ability for subtitles to be turned on and off. Once you encode them with the video they are always on. No matter what program you use they will be "burned" into the video. It's the not the fault of the ripper program. It's the limitations of MP4. Your alternative and best option is to extract the subtitles from the video and save them as a separate file. Many programs will then play the video with the file and you can turn on and off. I am not 100% sure but it might not be possible when watching on a TV, only a computer with a program like VLC media player.

      @MikeMBurke  2 роки тому

      I don't use this program anymore. Not since making this video and I will never use it again. The company denied there was an issue and I proved there was. Judging from the many comments of others who are also going through this I would say no, the problem has not been fixed by Digiarty. Unless someone with more info can correct me on that. It seems to still only rip into stereo.
      I demonstrated in this video that WinX does not capture audio in 5.1. It tells you it does in the output settings but when I show you in DaVinci Resolve it clearly does not. I did not use any other program before using WinX. I ripped nearly 600 DVD's and found out the hard way it wasn't ripping into 5.1 soundtracks. I went through every single setting and every scenario. It's not work correctly otherwise I would not have had the need to make this video in order to make others aware. WinX, at the time of this video, could only rip into stereo, no 5.1.
      Perhaps you are confused or misunderstood my video. When you say did the channel change to 2 after switching to 5.1 film the answer is no. That was not a setting in WinX. I used a video editing software called DaVinci Resolve in order to show you visual evidence of the audio tracks themselves that proved WinX was not processing into 5.1 tracks. That program has nothing to do with WinX. It was for demonstration purposes only. WinX does not have a 5.1 film setting. It lets you choose 2. 4 or 6. Of course 6 is actually 5.1 and what the program does is give you 4 empty tracks and two that contain the audio. So the file will say 6 channels but as I demonstrated it's not. It's just a stereo track. Again the settings in DaVinci Resolve have nothing to do with how WinX works.
      I ended up switching to WonderFOX and that program worked perfectly and ripped the audio properly into 5.1. I wouldn't recommend WinX if you want your ripped videos to have their original 5.1 soundtracks. Good luck

      Personally I would never combine the files in premiere into one big file. I don't see how that would be useful. A DVD file is about 4 GB so keep that in mind for how much storage space you would need. I keep them as separate files for each movie or TV episode. I then place them in folders. I have a media server made up of large hard drives with Plex so that I can stream them just like a streaming service. I like to put videos in folders that are separated by genre. Really whatever is easiest for you to manage. If you can fit them on a USB stick that would work or external drive as well.

      I don't know what it costs right now but I purchased it in 2020 and so far I have not needed to buy it again so it seems to me it is lifetime. I find it to be a great piece of software. It can rip into all those formats. I use MP4 for my Plex server and it has been great. Doesn't take up much space and gives me great quality. As far as ripping discs it can rip all DVD's but you need to have the correct DVD drive that has "LibreDrive" such as LG Electronics WH16NS40 drive. You might be able to update with a firmware that can also achieve this but I haven't done it so perhaps someone else can guide you on that. I don't know if there is a step by step on UA-cam video as I figured out how to use it on my own. You'll have to search. If I ever get time I may record a how to video myself but it won't be for awhile.

      @@hochhasd1 I am not an expert on drives. What I know is that any drive that has LibreDrive can rip without any restrictions. @@hochhasd1 Only if the drive itself is capable. Manufactures put restrictions embedded in the firmware that will prevent you from ripping certain DVD's and blu rays like Disney Movies being the biggest example. It's not a problem with all TV shows and movies just certain ones depending on the movie studio. With the correct drive it will remove the restriction and then the software can rip it. It's not an issue with software as all of them can rip the content. It is an issue with certain DVD and blu ray drives that have the restriction. Like I said if it has "LibreDrive" it will rip everything without an issue with whatever software you use. Otherwise you will need to research how to overcome this issue with drive you want if you are not willing to purchase a drive that has LibreDrive. The above example of the LG drive is the model I have and I had no issues with restrictions. It's on Amazon for around $70.

    I have downloaded WinX DVD Ripper and Winx DVD Author today. I have downloaded the UA-cam video that I want on DVD. I've pulled in into WinX DVD Ripper, analyzed the UA-cam video and am at that point. I've got WinX DVD Author and the beginning screen, as you did in your video. When I click on "Disc" in the upper, left corner, the "Select the source DVD disc:" pulls up...but blank. There is no option to choose from. The field will not allow me enter a title. Please tell me, what do I do? How do I make the title, as in you video, "Pearl Harbor," to appear? Thank you!

      DVD Ripper is not made for UA-cam videos. It's made to rip movies off DVD discs and convert them into a file format like MP4 or .mov. This program will not work for putting videos onto discs.

      Look at all the comments. It's more than just me. Last year I chose this program based on good reviews I saw here on You Tube about ripping in general otherwise I would have never heard of it. Where did they go? Don't know. Could still be here. I don't see a need for me to go back and look for them or watch them again. I'm not sure what you are getting at but as you can see I am not selling anything nor do I have any affiliate links for any program. I don't benefit from sharing my views on this. My purpose was to let others know about the problem I had with this software and show the actual problem as visual evidence so that people can make an informed decision as to what is best for them being that the company ignored the issue.

    i see, what i can sumize is, you had 6 channels to begin with after your winx, but when you imported your video into resolve something went wrong, its resolve that merged your audio, i guess that the setting 5.1 film changes audio in a certain codec, try SAME AS SOURCE, or in the case of resolve, BASED ON SELECTED MEDIA, this would mean that resolve will pass through the audio without converting or re-encoding, anyway, thats my opinnion, cheers

    • @MikeMBurke
      @MikeMBurke  7 місяців тому +1

      You "sumized" wrong. I also did this with Adobe Premiere with the same results and no surround either when playing the ripped video through video/media players and on my media server that streams through my TV and surround sound receiver. WinX itself created 6 channels but placed all the actual audio into two. It is a software issue with WINX and not settings I chose. I spent a lot of time on this and tried every possible settings and scenario in ALL programs. It had nothing to do with importing into Resolve. I know what I am doing. I have been editing videos for decades. This is a WINX issue and I have yet to see anyone here comment that they successfully ripped a DVD with actual 5.1 surround.

      @@ronnyb5890 Thank you! That's fine to go through those steps that you take but for someone looking for a paid one-stop solution then WinX is not going to work if someone wants the 5.1 surround and they are not looking to go through all the work. They want a program that will rip the DVD into a MP4 with the 5.1 and be done with it. Paid programs like WinX and Wonderfox also rip a lot faster than free programs if someone had a lot to rip. For anyone wiling to do the work and similar steps that you take then free programs are the way to go. They will be slower but will get he job done and with 5.1. For me I wanted to rip the DVDs to put on my media server so when WinX failed I moved to Wonderfox and it ripped the movies with the 5.1 and no more work was needed. Winx is a little faster than Wonderfox and is only good if you don't want 5.1. Enjoy your day!
