    I don't like to nitpick but didn't Saitama enter the tournament for the reward? Also didn't he want to learn if martial arts made fighting enjoyable? I'm 100% sure he didn't enter because he wanted to "learn how to defeat Garou".

    • @lucasvanwijngaarden670

    Season 2 isn't about Saitama, Saitama is a "C-Plot" in terms of this video. Garou, is the "A-Plot", and to the tee, is following the formulas of the shounen format. The roles are reversed, where we're not trying to get Saitama to Garou, it's the other way around. Garou was strong at the beginning, but still needed to overcome the challenges of certain ranked heroes to eventually make us feel the impact of the real fight when he actually goes against Saitama. Garou is A-Plot, trying to meet Saitama C-Plot, while The Monster Association is B-Plot.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 5 років тому +18

      yea, that's pretty clear cut... the problem is with the delivery. garo isn't portrayed in a way that draws the viewers in - or maybe they _intended_ to do so, but simply failed.

      i feel like Saitama being "one punch man" makes it pretty obvious that he will defeat the enemy in one punch so hyping up his battle is pointless. Saitama has become a side character to his own series because the outcome of his fights are inevitable. I believe ehat the aeries is doin now is showing the chracter development of the "side characters" because that is what becomes more interesting. Thu regolve around Saitama however because of his influence on each of them i.e. Genos trying to get stroger and stronger following Saitama's footsteps. The character devlopment of Saitama is no longer about hia rise to number one hero through brute strength since we all know he has that already, hia development has become more emotional where as everyone around him is going through a phyiscal journey/development. Holding on to the idea of looking frward to Saitama fight is just us knowin that he is the main character and wanting him to win but maybe the studio wants to break away from that idea more and more since it's such a cliche. Instead Saitama's story is more influential and emotional about how ou can affect people around you even if the fights are very physical. it gives the story another layer on top of just fight scene after fight scene because we already know the outcome. it's just that we are so used to the main character being the one to clean things up which is why we want saitama to fight already but what kind of story would that make, i believe the reason saitama ia as removed from the action as possible is to actually remove him and use him as little as possible to build stories around the other characters instead of hypin saitama up. there is no more hyping up a single lunch battle, but there is hyping up and development of the characters affected by saitama

    The real problem with OP Season 2 is that it is incomplete. You need to see the bigger picture to understand what is going on;
    Saitama is NOT the main character during the Garou arc, Garou is. What ONE does in this arc is flipping the roles of the shonen characters. Garou follows the classic shonen hero's journey; constantly meeting new threats that would usually be enemies/monsters but this time around are heroes; being constantly forced to overcome his limits, becoming stronger and stronger with each encounter. He's the Goku, the Naruto and the Yusuke Urameshi of this arc. Saitama IS the goal, and you might think he's irrelevant to the plot, but that would probably be because you are watching it with "shonen googles". Saitama's role is not to build tension or to become stronger, but to connect with the viewer. He's tired, broke, unemployed, depressed, anti-social and spends most time reading manga or playing videogames, he's your average nowadays teenager/young-adult, and he's trying to find new motivations in life.
    It is established since episode 1 that Saitama is unbeatable, and we will rarely see a monster as powerful as Boros was in the show, that's why this arc follows Garou and his struggle to become the strongest monster in the world. He's the anti-Saitama.

      True, OPM season 2 is not about Saitama anymore but the world and the different people that surround him. We already know he's OP, so repeating the formula of s1 will surely bore the viewers like us. I think s2 upped it more by subverting everyone's expectation.
      P.s. Not gonna lie, Garou being attacked by Class A heroes, after being beaten up so badly by Watchdogman, is a very effective shonen trope to me.

To actually think that he feels like he needs to "figure out a way to beat someone" leaves me speechless.

    Saitama isn't even the main character or "Protagonist" here. It's actually Garo. And more focus is given to side characters like King etc compared to season 1. Saitama and Genos are the actual "side characters" here.
    I'll admit it isn't as obvious as it is in the manga but still.

      They said numerous times that Saitama does not feel like the protagonist, which is exactly what you said. I think you have an issue with them finding that to be a negative. Sure, it doesn't have to be a bad thing, but many people continue to watch One Punch Man in order to see the adventures of One Punch Man. When One Punch Man is no longer about One Punch Man, well I think any criticism regarding that is completely valid.

    • @Merennulli
      @Merennulli 5 років тому +3

      Which, sidelining a main character to focus on growth of a challenger is something that worked for other series. I think the problem here is that Garo was played (relatively) straight while Saitama as the focus in season 1 established a comedic plot expectation.I don't read the manga/webcomic, so I don't know how well this is playing out for readers (I do read ahead in the Wiki, though, so I know where it's going). I think it suffers from the same problem a lot of anime with a strong start do, in that the second season needs to set up a larger narrative to make for a 5+ season series but can't do that within the mold of the first season.
      Granted, a lot of us (myself included) actually liked season 2 of OPM. We got to delve into the secondary characters, set up a lot of their motivation and powers, and get a good chuckle at how they get deconstructed, usually while fighting Garo. The thing that might have made it stronger overall, both for those who liked it and those who didn't, would have been if Garo had a strong comedic element as well. The sob story of being sympathetic to the monsters may have been intended as that, but it really just came across as if it was played straight rather than for laughs.

    the biggest problem of 2nd season IS that even though the pacing was super rushed, they didnt finish one arc unlike season 1 (which had a bunch of mini arcs, so at the end, felt somewhat conclusive)
    while this seasons just suddenly ends without closing ANY plot ploints it started and just leaves you asking '"thats it?"
    honestly, if the redrawn manga didnt even finish this arc yet...they shouldnt even have bothered with making a second season...but its clear that the higher ups who own the right to the franchise were desperate to milk it for more money after season 1 got soo insanley huge and popular...so they couldnt wait, and were even willing to change studio to one thats too busy at the time to create something good during the time they gave them....but apparently that didnt stop them from doing it. hence why we got this lose-lose situation, where BOTH art/animation and story are lackluster...

    My counterpoint about this video is that you seem to be viewing One Punch Man as a typical shonen battle anime, where the goal is winning the fight against the bad guy. That's never really the question with OPM, and further, OPM isn't even a battle anime. One Punch Man is, in my opinion, a slice of life anime cleverly disguised as a battle anime. This season saw TONS of character development for Saitama, both in making new friends, and in realizing things about himself. One of the best moments in the series happened when King gave this long, inspirational speech about how being the strongest hero didn't make Saitama the GREATEST hero, only to have that moment hilariously undercut by King's admission he stole the speech from a manga.
    Other anime youtubers suggest that Saitama's battle is ALWAYS the B or C plot, and that Saitama is only ever the A plot when the story has nothing to do with an immediate fight. Watching season 2 from that perspective might make it more enjoyable for you!

      Fortunately Season 3 will have more about the other heroes. And since Garou was abandoned in the webcomic since the end of the monster association ark. And it's likely the current ark will not include him. He will not be a part of season 4.

      It was not funny. Scenes with King were boring. Too many pointless side charachters. There were one-second fights in season 1 but they were funny. In season 2, every Saitama fight was one-second (Saitama attacked first and fights ended immidiately) and they were without any soul, lines, reactions etc. (except the final round of the tournament which was too short). Also we did not see any epic fight (like House of Evolution boss and end of season 1 alien boss Boros). I think Garou is not deep enough. His ideas were interesting but his story was not at all.
      To sum up, eventhough people say "Season 1 is perfect and season 2 is good/meh/standard", in reality season 2 is just SHIT. Not with comparison to season 1. Solely, generally, and in every aspect season 2 is one of the WORST anime I have ever seen.

    Where I think it went wrong was the downgrade in animation by JC Staff and the abrupt ending (stopping in the middle of the arc).
    Overall I think this season is 8/10
    I think Garou and the other S Class heroes really carry this season. Saitama as a plot device for the other characters seems fitting because beating eveything in one punch everytime in every episode can become repetitive and boring.

But it keeps getting brought back up as "critique" of the thing like it's some new insight, when it's not, lol. And yea, the pacing of the season could have been a little better than the abrupt ending, but I still think it was mostly solid (wasn't the worst animation I've seen out there by a long shot -- was still pretty decent -- and was better than us never getting any more animated One Punch Man.) My thoughts exactly. Yeah, everything could be better as a whole (visually wise but also the sound effects, which were horrible), but it would be really hypocritical of me to say it was garbage, because I've seen WAY worse. The 2nd season, if you read the manga, you know it couldn't have ended any later or sooner, because that was the biggest fight yet and the big events that follow aren't even finished in the manga, so it would have been really dissapointing to end just before the turning points of the current arc.
      I do hope some other studio with more talented people to improve an all the visual and sound aspects, since the upcoming battles deserve it and are some of the best up until this point. JC staff is not bad on my eyes, but definetely not the best choice for this kind of anime, especially with the poor planning and management they showed for this season, perhaps S2 would have been incredible if they gave the team more time to work instead of the rushed deadlines because of the fans pressure.

This video just feels like youre pigeonholing controversial opinions to make your theory work.
    Also, how much more of the "A plot" (Saitama) can we really follow at this point until it just gets boring? Suggesting the show needs to focus around all these other rich and geuniely interesting characters, like Garou, just to build up to Saitama coming in to save the day and basically soil the arcs that are trying to be built? You're ignoring the fact that One Punch Man is not a full on satire and still follows the Shounen formula with similar escalation to that of Shounen. The only Satire element is the fact that Saitama can one shot all his enemies. If you look at OPM as a show in general, its formula isn't any unique from what it satires itself on.
      The problem with Garou is the fact that no matter what he will do in the story, he is worthless as a threat to Saitama. Seeing him basically get easily one shotted by Saitama twice with ease is incredibly disappointing or dissatisfying. It's a narrative consequence of making an unbeatable MC is that it makes any sort of conflict to arise uninteresting.
      No matter what Garou does in the narrative, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of the narrative. The fact still remains is that alot of people's interest in OPM mostly comes from cool fight sequences and decent animation which this season lacked almost entirely.

      Completely agree with you, I feel like people expected a repeat of season 1 while not getting what made the show so great and why it couldn't just be that.
      Also Saitama's story has always been internal, his story is not about the fights he ends with a single punch but about his relationship with king and other heros and what it means to fulfill your goals. He hasn't been sidelined he just never was "inline" they way people thought he was.
      Further it's pointless to talk about a climax in this analysis as they are only halfway through the arc and thus haven't completed the a or b story.

    I think the only real problem with season two is it applies the mangas pacing to the anime. The entirety of this arc, which wisecrack seems to have missed, is about the growth and development of Garou. It's like the One punch man equivalent of infinity war, but as a season climax it doesn't quite land, whereas within the confines of the manga's pacing it feels a lot more satisfying.
    I think if the manga were released at a bit of a better pace, this would have really been a mid season finale for a 23 episode anime.

Why does the audience want Saitama to be more involved? Do we even want that? What is Saitama symbolically? I feel like you're missing the point of this arc.
    Saitama isn't the main character, Garou is.
    The story is a flip on traditional shonen series. Usually we see the hero's growth and development take place, but in OPM we see the opposite.
    We see that Saitama is at the end of his journey, he's already achieved his goal. However, with Garou, we still see him going through that process.
    Also, within the world of OPM, Garou serves the role of the villain, but to the viewer, he's more of a protagonist than an antagonist. Which is even more of a flip on traditional shonen, seeing "the bad guy" going through the shonen development.

    this is probably the wrongest interpretation of season 2, and also maybe the most common. People seem to forget that the point is that Saitama is BORED, utterly bored, there is no excitement in his life. Because he always wins, this season is there to show us just that. If we are expecting Saitama to have excitement, then we are Saitama. When he fails to get any interesting fight, when killing goeketsu off screen is dissatisfying, that's becuase the fight was unsatisfying to Saitama as well.
    This season is also just the first part of the whole Monster Association Arc, and the plot A is the Human Monster Garou, he is the polar opposite of Saitama, he has all the excitement, he grows and gets better. Garou is the Plot A.
    Monster Association and Orochi is Plot B, and we know how monsters plots end whenever Saitama joins the fight.

      OPM is becoming more complicated than Neon Genesis Evangelion, ok I am exaggerating but ONE is really a genius, OPM has a very complicated subplot and if analyzed for good it turns out in fact the genius that is ONE, but in the anime they have not been able to adapt especially the rhythm on which OPM is based in order not to be boring, to say OPM in the manga entertains very well and it seems an amusing and epic reading, and it is so in a certain way, but then when I analyze what ONE wants to communicate to us it is really mature .
      OPM is at the same time a deconstruction of shonen and superheroism, but it is also a reading as I said with a subplot where there is an individual like Saitama looking for something beautiful is that perhaps he will never find with a "fight" then we discover this world full of individuals, even if they are very happy, charismatic and full of energy, especially Garou (this one in particular has a development and characterization that no other character in OPM has) that despite being against the whole world goes on for his goal without ever stopping and getting bored, this is the contraposition to Saitama and it is Garou's subplot, then we go from the deconstruction one, Garou is practically a shonen hero who, however, cheers for the bad guys and has a characterization similar to a Vegeta or Pain (Naruto) but as we know unlike any other shonen hero he will never win because there is Saitama, then there is that of the simple plot that is what we saw in the anime.
      With this I analyzed only one character and not OPM as a whole, but if I did it I would never end, but I hope it managed to make it clear how complicated and simple OPM is at the same time, let's not underestimate OPM is not something like any other shonen average.

    The manga builds the main plot with the monster assosiation way longer, and the Hero Hunter is a legit sideplot, long and full of charakters and their development.
    Saitama on the other hand has serious issus and is so bored that he wanted to quit being a hero and thus learning why people are having fun with martial arts.
    Therefor the tournament.
    Saitamas A-Plot is his depression.

To use your compersion this is as if the Freeze arc stopped while Goku was traveling through space to get to Namek. Yes there is that much content left for a hopeful third season, as the material of season 2 of One Punch Man is the set up for all these seemingly separate stories to converge in a singular place. Sadly season 2 was only 12 and not 24 episodes long. Seriously manga Volume wise the Hero Hunter makes for over 2 thirds of all of One Punch Man thus far. It'd be amazing if you did video on the whole story even if that means manga spoilers. Cause when you have the whole picture and not a piece of a puzzle the prospective changes. I disagree with this analysis. It makes an assumption which strikes me as false in treating Season 2 as a standalone story. Season 2 came across to me as Act I of a story. It establishes conflict - Saitama's boredom in parallel with the doomsday threat to the world posed by the monster association, as well as Genos' weakness and Garo's frustration. This conflict in turn propels the heroes on a journey that forces them to confront and overcome this conflict. The journey happens in Act II. It did not happen in Season 2. The season ended just as our characters are set to embark on this journey. Season 2 did an excellent job of setting the stakes. It demonstrated the overwhelming role that Saitama has played in his world, by showing that he has unwillingly inspired many of the greatest heroes of the Hero Association and defeated the world's greatest threats. Saitama's existential crisis, therefore, represents the true threat to his world. This, in turn, is the subversion of the hero trope that we expect from OPM. It's not so much the monsters that are the greatest threat, as much as the cynicism of the heroes. Season 2 sets this up but in no way moves the resolve it. It think it presents a fairly successful set up. In fact, I probably liked the more character driven approach better than Season 1.

    What went wrong? Nothing
    Season 2 is great and Garou is an amazingly complex character.
    But going by your breakdown
    Your whole gripe seems be that whatever plot saitama is in is by default the A plot or that it should be...
    I would argue that the saitama is not the protagonist of season 2, it's Garou, garou is the A plot,
    Garou = A plot
    Heros fighting the Monster Association = B plot
    Saitama and the martial arts tournament = C plot
    All these things do intersect in the climax against garou fighting the hero association, the monster association showing up to save him, elder centipede takes out the remaining heros or would of if not for saitama showing up.
    Just like during the namek saga goku was not the A plot...until he was.
    Krillin and gohan searching for the dragon balls was the A plot
    Vegeta and freeza's men playing cat and mouse were the B plot.
    Goku training was the C nning plot.
    It wasn't until goku got there that he became to A plot and that was only for a couple eps and he was out of commission again for ages and became the C plot again almost immediately.
    OPM season 2 if anything suffers from being too short.
    Just like how the namek arc had goku as the C plot until he briefly fought the ginyu force becoming the A plot before becoming the C plot again, then onl6 becoming the the real A plot again as he fought freeza.
    Saitama was the C plot of season 2, briefly becoming the A plot as he fought Elder centipede and if the season were longer he'd be the C plot again until things came to a head vs orochi and garou in the climax of the monster association arc where he would become the real A plot.
    I guess season 2 suffers from being a 12 episode season, back in the days of 24+ episode seasons it would of concluded with either the garou fight. (Freeza) not the elder centipede fight (ginyu force).

    • @3gles006
      @3gles006 5 років тому +2

      I think the intention behind the story was to be like you say, letting Saitama be the C plot with the rest of the tournament, letting the heroes be the B and Garou be the A as it is in the manga. But it honestly felt like they always leaned in towards Saitama to be the A plot throughout the Season which might be one of the reasons why it went downhill. Saitama has the spotlight for too long and Garou and the rest of the Hero Association screentime always felt rushed.
      For example the Tournament Arc: The troupe here was that in Shounen Anime, tournaments are the arcs that mean the most but here it wasn't supposed to mean anything and the focus should have been on the Monster Associations Invasion and only briefly showing the progression of the tournament for the viewers.
      I guess they choose to adapt to much information covering almost 60 chapters of the manga in 12 episodes.

      And on another note, saitama's VA felt a little lackluster compared to season 1. I get they were trying to go for an "uninterested" tone but most of the the voice acting wasn't up there compared to season 1 as well as the OST for this season.

      It's not animation. OP man is just not interesting because there's no real danger to anything or anyone. Also it literally is the embodiment of what every so called anime fan hates other series for doing. An all powerful character with literally no competition anywhere. How is it interesting? No idea. I watch simply to see if these ppl would have the balls to actually make a character to challenge this guy. However the side characters fight are very entertaining and I sorta wish they just take Saitama out at least momentarily and let the others get victory against a truly powerful opponent

    • @MildWilliam

      @@ShakaZ3D No, I'm invested in the manga, so the plot and anticlimaxes do keep me entertained. The martial arts tournament arc does drag on in the manga too, though.

    To me the first season isn't something they could have done again. The mass size of everything would have turned season 2 into a lame copy. So they did character building and some of the funniest comedy I've seen in an anime before.
    Both seasons were fun

    What stood out to me as the theme of this season was characters coming to the realization that they were far from the image they had of themselves. Someone is always better, and even for the strongest person alive, Saitama is immensely lacking in personal skills and even morality. Nearly every character arc in this season ends with a face off against someone who defeats them outright, and they either grow as a person because of it or cease to exist.

    A minute in and there’s already plenty of errors. As others pointed out, Mob Psycho 100 was done by Bones, not madhouse. Season 2 of OPM was not done by madhouse, it was jc staff.... I’m not entirely sure if I should spend 20 minutes on this video now.

  • @OblivionNL
    @OblivionNL 5 років тому

    In one of your videos about season 1, you explained beautifully how boredom comes from Saitama's inability to find challenges in his life, and how that might reflect on us as viewers. I want to sidestep some of the comments that I've read bout how A, B and C plotlines were chosen, and mention the reflection that Saitama.. experienced.. during this season.
    One realization was consciously, where he wondered where he was during all that time (mentioned here too). The second part was unconsciously, when King offers a solution to his boredom by trying to open his eyes to the remaining challenges (which Saitama flatout ignored). These challenges are in fact not physically limited, but socially. Saitama needs to change his mindset towards minimizing collateral damage, building his reputation, inspiring moral values in his audience, etc.
    I think season 2 builds up this choice for a later season. What Saitama chooses can go either way.. remaining bored and unchanged, or finding it in himself to get out of his comfort zone.
    I hope the creators have this kind of philosophy in mind when thinking towards how this series will end. Other than that, I think they nicely expanded the world in this season, even with Saitama being less relevant than in season 1.

    Not really... I feel saitama has been relegated to the background for a more compelling story of the hero hunter Garou.
    I think they understand that the OP joke of saitama has ran its course and therefore they’re trying to minimize his involvement in the whole story hence only bringing him back in extremely dire situations but they try to overcome this change by giving us a new hero/villain (anti-villain?) to root for and we are meant to follow the new “A-story” arc instead of expecting saitama to show up and finish everything all the time.
    Sure tensions still rises and falls as saitama comes in but we’re meant to be more curious about Garou and what’s going to happen to him than whether he’ll get ever meet with saitama and if he can ever beat our OP hero which is why they quickly made them meet and showed us how quickly and easily saitama can dispose of him.
    In short, Saitama doesn’t take center stage in this season at all until the very end and we get sweet stories of Garou and the monsters association instead. Yes we expect Saitama to save the day in the end but that’s not the real focus as is in other stories where they’re meant to hold on until the hero comes in and saves the day

    I think the crux of Saitama's inaction is actually in the conversation he has with King when they're on their way to dealing with Centichoro, when King tells him he "has a lot of potential to grow", and has so much more to learn about being a hero than mere strength, a pursuit Saitama has initially shown little thought for. While he does have a certain philosophy we could piecemeal together from his exchanges with his opponents--Genus, Suiryu, etc.--he has never devoted much time to becoming the best version of a hero he could be. It's not an accident this conversation with King takes place at the end of the season.

  • @oldeskul
    @oldeskul 5 років тому

    I think they could have diverted from the original source material a bit, like having Saitama going to the martial arts tournament not to join it, but to watch and having him get in a scrape in the parking lot with a couple of martial artists and finding himself unwittingly roped into the tournament only to get disqualified on some random minor technicality, like him not actually knowing a martial art or having his belt tied improperly and then have the monster association right after he left bust in. Having Garou wanting to defeat heroes not because he wants to be a monster, but to prove he's the strongest.

    Real problem:
    season 1 ends at the end of an arc (the boros invasion)
    season 2 ends in the middle of the Garou's arc.
    It's basically like watching a movie and, while you are in the middle, it ends with a "see you later" (and not in a planned way like a star wars\marvel movie).
    It basically means that there is no payoff at all and people are simply stuck there thinking "that's it?" which is a shame because every person that has read the original manga knows that this arc is so damn good later...
