Kooteney R in 2020, N.Saskatchewan R in 2021, Red Deer R in 2022 and really helps with choosing a portion that meets the skill levels of our party. Third week in August it looks like the Athabasca R will be the river of choice this round. (Like the insulated food pack idea. Great to see the bear spray on standby and food packs hung high during the night slumber).

Three nights is very reasonable for the full 200 km from Hinton to Whitecourt. It would be fairly long days on the water/50 km a day, but should be no problem. This stretch has no more than class I+, and only in a couple spots (easily avoidable). Shortening the trip would leave more time for relaxing at camp, but either way it's a fantastic canoe trip. Hi Nick, your canoe shows the scars of the many adventures you have been on (scratches on the bottom). A sharp axe always comes in handy on a camping trip and that cover is a great idea. Thanks for sharing Nick.

No, there weren't any rapids near Whitecourt. The only real rapids of the trip were much closer to Hinton than Whitecourt. I'm not sure what may have been there years ago. Thank you for watching.

It's a really good sheath, even better than I was expecting. I really like the look, and it will last a very long time. I wouldn't recommend swimming in the river. Wading in calm water along the shore would be ok, but swimming could be dangerous. A paddle board would work. Thanks for watching.
HelaVentures near Rocky will do it, but it's expensive as they need to use one of their vehicles to get their driver back to rocky. To lessen the cost, you could arrange to meet your vehicle at the end of trip in Drayton, and then take their driver back to Rocky. Also, if you drop your boats off at the put-in beforehand, you could probably get a cab in Drayton to take you back to the put-in.

Yeah the wind was a problem at times, but didn't take away from the whole experience. The campsites were great, and there were lots of other nice options too. I will try this trip again in late summer or fall, in another couple years. Thanks for watching. Take care.

Hi Jim, yeah I was really impressed with the camping opportunities on this river. The bugs were almost non-existent. Only saw a few mosquitoes, and no flies or wasps. It was windy during the days, and breezy enough in the evenings to keep them away. Thanks for taking the time, take care.
Whitecourt cab company wanted $320 to drive me to Hinton, so my Dad kindly volunteered to help with shuttling my truck. Not how I originally planned it, definitely an inconvenience for him... But much appreciated by me. Logistics are a real pain sometimes.

It's a plastic canoe barrel that I lined with 2 layers of duct insulation, and 1" foam on top and bottom. Seemed to work pretty good, still had ice at the end of the trip. I kept all the meat and perishables in there, it's quite bear-resistant, almost bear-proof. Thanks again Bob.

We are planning a trip down the north sask from rocky to Drayton. Do you know of any shuttle services in that area?
HelaVentures near Rocky will do it, but it's expensive as they need to use one of their vehicles to get their driver back to rocky. Looks very similar to the NSR between Rocky and Drayton.
Yeah they share many similarities. Some large cliff faces. NSR has Abraham's Gate, this one has The Gates.
